Blood Pressure

Don't worry.....be happy!:D:D:D

Seriously, I hope that you get to feeling better Dwayne. Even though I am older and over-weight, I feel better and have better B/P and other readings than I did years ago, when I was working rotating shifts and fighting union idiots. Stress reduction really helps a LOT!!!;)

Your story sounds very similar to mine. Your headed for trouble if you don't get some help. Happy thoughts are not enough as much as I wish it was, believe me I tried. Blood pressure meds changed my life, please try to find a way to get to a doctor.

Take a break if you can, I know times are hard to break from, but do not let stuff get you tense.

Be well and get better whatever it takes.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your health problems. I would say the most important thing is to watch your stress levels. I know it's a bit cliche, but when you feel yourself getting stressed out, take some deep breaths and forget about whatever it is that's stressing you out. Listen to your doctor. It you need to change your diet, do it. More exercise, do it. Take your meds, whatever. Even if it means quitting smoking or drinking less.

I went through a pretty hard time health-wise towards the end of last year - nearly lost my life because I put off going to the doctor and didn't listen to him until it was almost too late. I had no idea that I was putting my life in danger. Luckily, it was a problem that could be fixed and I took the steps to do so before it was too late. I definitely will not make that mistake twice.

My father battled hypertension, among other things, for a long time and it led to a STEMI (severe heart attack.) Luckily, he made it out alive and did what was necessary to avoid future complications. He changed his diet, quit smoking, left his high-stress job in NYC for a job closer to home, started exercising, etc. now more than a decade and a half later, he is doing great!!

I wish you the best and hope that everything works out. If you need to talk to anyone, feel free to contact me.

Take care of yourself!

There's a lot of great advice in here! Stress plays a huge factor in hypertension and almost all sickness and disease, so avoiding it key.

In addition to the supplements suggested, I know traditional Chinese medicine would be PERFECT for your situation. Acupuncture is not very invasive at all and can yield some surprisingly profound results within just a few treatments. Additionally, the herbs that a Chinese doctor would prepare for you, whether in pill form or as a tea, will have far less side effects than conventional medicines and go a long way in reducing your blood pressure (they can also be given in such a way that they could compliment and enhance the effects of your pharmaceutical medications if you wanted to). In addition to the drop in blood pressure, the subtle changes to your body's organ systems and energetic pathways that come with regular acupuncture treatments will also help stabilize your mood, manage your stress, and ultimately make you less prone to "take the bait" when dealing with bone heads.

Additionally, acupuncture treatments will generally cost way less than visiting a conventional MD, especially if you happen to live near a school of Chinese medicine where you could get discounted treatments from students. It may take a few treatments to find a doctor that you feel comfortable with, but once you do you'll be good to go.

Pardon my infomercial, but I had to at least share this option with you. If it is something you'd be interested in, or want to learn more about it, feel free to contact me via PM or email and I'd be happy to discuss further :)

Good luck with everything Dwayne!

I replied in the e-mail I just sent you. Stress kills. Try to relax a little. I know it's hard, but it works wonders. The place I work is known as "heart attack hill" to the local EMT's. It is not unusual to see them carting someone off on a stretcher out of one of the buildings. In fact, unfortunately it is a regular occurance. :o

Lot of good advice here already, but I'll sum up my thoughts: medicate and meditate.

What Bill said !

I have a family history of Hypertensive HBP, I took meds for a bit, thought I had my bp under control, diet, exercise ........

I stopped taking the meds and wound up going to the cardiologist with PVC's (Premature Ventricular Contractions), thump/thump, thump/blah, thump/thump, thump/blah, like riding a horse with hiccups, made it really hard to concentrate, all BP related.

I take my meds !

I'm feeling a vibe that I should get my Harley fixed and tear up the Hill Country roads, and a couple of Hill Country bars. :)

The acupuncture is a very interesting possibility, I have a few tattoo's, I wonder if a few more in the right place would have the same effect? :D That, and I will be in touch soon.

Dave, thank you, it means the world to me to hear from you. I've not been talking to you like I should, I need to keep friends close.

Thanks to everyone so far, I do feel this is my home, well that and the Swamp. I ask because I respect most everyone here.

You may need to have your kidneys checked, including a renal artery scan. The kidneys regulate blood pressure in the body, and long term high blood pressure can cause kidney failure. The test is simple. It is an injection of an nuclear dye and then lying motionless in a scanner for 45 minutes.

I have had high blood pressure for years, my doctor ordered this scan for me a few years ago, since my BP is difficult to control. If the renal artery is blocked, it can be stinted much the same way as a heart artery. Go see the doctor.

One of your symptoms, "hearing it in your ears" is one way when I know mine is heading high again. I an currently on 4 meds to keep it somewhat controlled.

Doc

go to the doctor...

PS,

I am not sure I completely buy into the sodium (salt) thing... I don't eat much salt (never really have) and mine is still high...

Mine is well controlled with the prescription lisinopril It is recommended by my Doctor wife, has little or nothing in the way of side effects, and my insurance pays for it 100%.

High blood pressure can kill you dead if not controlled.

IIRC, only a small percentage of HBP patients also have a salt problem, but do your own research!

I can't add to the great advice already here but if you need some laughs, I'll try to help. Maybe try some comedy stations on pandora as I've laughed hard at some if the comedians. As for those that try to get ya, just keep smiling. Or end every sentence with "in accordance with prophecy". It'll annoy people in accordance with prophecy :D

Diet and attitude = 10%
Heredity = 90%
Unfortunately meds are the way to go, but as there are so many out there, you don't have to deal with the side effects of one, just have the doctor try something else. I tried 4 different types until I found one that worked and had no side effects for me. Don't let the doctor dictate a particular script, it's your life. If he doesn't want to work with you, dump him and find one who does. Good luck.

Needtoknow had a gret idea, pets are proven to lower stress, anxiety and blood pressure. Go to a local dog rescue and get a friend that will never judge you no matter how skinny, fat, ugly, poor, rich, drunk or smelly...dogs give unconditional love. My pic is 2 rescue pups i got and they keep me laughing everyday.

Lots of great suggestions here but high BP can also be hereditary so invest in a good machine so you can monitor it yourself and go to see a Doctor who can help you regulate this issue if it is indeed something you can not necessarily regulate on your own

Don't play around and kid yourself man and don"t self medicate. We need you!

As stated above by RedbeAR15, if you don't want to see a doctor just yet, invest in a B.P. monitor so you can see for yourself where you are. The one pictured here is what I've been using for the last 10 years and I'm still here and pretty:D I just checked ebay[is that allowed here?] and you can get it for $35 with shipping. That's probably cheaper than a doctor visit but it will tell you if you're needing a doctor visit.

As a sideline: 1. I thank you for starting this thread to make people aware of the "Silent Killer" that stalks all of us and caused me to call my first 2 sons [32 & 30] and remind them that dad was diagnosed with HBP when I was 31 so they should get checked out.
2. I thank Mr. Busse for not shutting down this thread since it has nothing to do with knives. I'm sure by now, he has seen it and elected it to go on because he cares about his customers.

i went in for a exam, 210 over 100, other arm, 170 over 90, got home pro machine, 135 over 60. get a machine, keep a log of waking, noon and before bed, keep it for a couple of weeks, every day three times a day, and go see your general practitioner with the results. remember this, they make three diff sized cuffs, don't let them put a kid cuff on an adult or the other way around. some places are lazy...
