Blood Pressure

ps: one time i went in and the nurse put the cuff around the bottle of jack daniels i was carrying, if you have to, go to a diff place, a calm place with gals in bikini's, serving you margaritas. record that at least once per day for a month, if your wife doesn't beat the crap out of you than you'r ok.

sometimes when i've had a snort or two and i'm sharpening my knife, i slice some arteries, this has a huge effect on blood pressure but plays hell on your health insurance. our new USA insurance policy should cover you though...

You need a physical exam and probably medication. Your symptoms are likely due to BP but you might have some other issues. If it keeps up GO TO THE ER. They can't refuse treatment for emergent care regardless of ability to pay. Believe me, medical bills AFTER a stroke, heart attack, etc will be exponentially more expensive and what happens to your family if you are dead or permanently disabled?

Best wishes and I hope you can seek appropriate care in the very near future.

Quit watching or listening to the news.
Now THAT is something worth noting, I cant stand to watch the news anymore, way too frustrating. Worth avoiding at any cost.
As stated above by RedbeAR15, if you don't want to see a doctor just yet, invest in a B.P. monitor so you can see for yourself where you are. The one pictured here is what I've been using for the last 10 years and I'm still here and pretty:D I just checked ebay[is that allowed here?] and you can get it for $35 with shipping. That's probably cheaper than a doctor visit but it will tell you if you're needing a doctor visit.

As a sideline: 1. I thank you for starting this thread to make people aware of the "Silent Killer" that stalks all of us and caused me to call my first 2 sons [32 & 30] and remind them that dad was diagnosed with HBP when I was 31 so they should get checked out.
2. I thank Mr. Busse for not shutting down this thread since it has nothing to do with knives. I'm sure by now, he has seen it and elected it to go on because he cares about his customers.
I got one of those little machines at an estate sale, amazingly accurate, I dont like using it for the results I see come up, and the little bastard hurts. But it did prove a theory. Tested nearly 190/ somethng and did a relaxation exercise, tested 150/something It does work, all be it temporary. But it does work.
This one's gonna hurt....No Bacon!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Skunk! Thank you! A good giggle is worth so much! Remind me to stick a JD bottle in my shirt next doc's visit. :)

Sage advice, if I live through it I'll report back, off to Bikinis! :)

If your systolic pressures are ranging from 150-190, you really should start a medication. Sounds like you already know those numbers are too high. Baby aspirin is fine for lowering your risk of ischemic stroke and heart attack, but it won't lower your blood pressure. Know that even if you don't have insurance, the medication you will likely need should only cost $10 for a three month supply at a Walmart because they are generic medications. You do need to get a physical exam and prescription for the medication by visiting a doctor.

One helpful piece of advice regarding food shopping is to buy food only along the perimeter of the grocery store. All the fresh foods: veg, meats, ect are on the perimeter. All the bad salty, preserved, TV dinner, canned stuff is in the center isles.

LOL ... Skunk's suggestions do have a lot of "fun" merit to them :D

I am just back from my early walk and work out ... the world is such a nicer quieter place in the early dawn hours :)

At 150+ pounds you're not carrying any undue surplus weight at all ... and not smoking for 20 years is another plus ... all of which are good  I suspect though that this does mean a few "meds" might be in order ... and prevention is always better than cure ...

One of my best mates is a Consultant surgeon on back injuries ... met him this AM for a run in the hills with the dogs ... he reckons that his move to the countryside and starting the day off like this has made a huge difference to him. He is soon to apply for the local Mountain Rescue team and he has dropped 2 stone over this last year. Briefly spoke to him about your "stats" as weight wise I was conscious you're at an ideal weight ... he thought it likely to be "cost effective" to get a doc to check you out. He did also say that "controlling" stress was just as important though. If you were able to bring your BP down to 150 ... what ever you did to do that keep some time in the day to do it regularly.

I hope things get better for you real soon.
A long walk out in the woods always works for me.

1. Make sure you actually HAVE high blood pressure, I was put on a beta-blocker for 6 months by my doctor because of high bp, but he never bothered letting me borrow a meter to take home. Switched doctors, turns out I only had high blood pressure to be concerned about when in the doctors office.. Obviously you shouldn't count on this, but its worth a stab if you haven't checked it for yourself yet.

2. Breathe correctly:

* In through the nose, out through the mouth. Exhalation should take longer than inhalation.
* Do not breathe too fast for your current level of activity.
* Learn to breathe with your diaphragm instead of your chest.

This works (for me at least ymmv), it lowered my general pulse rate by 10-20 strokes per minute, made me generally less prone to stress and lowered my bp. There is some evidence that practicing this for even 15-30 minutes a day will lower your pressure measurably. But better is making it a continuous habit. As far as my limited understanding goes, acting calm will make you calm as easily as the other way around and too much oxygen in your blood is actually toxic to your body as well.

Obviously I'm not a doctor, so all this may not be true :) Good luck getting more healthy.

Wise words!

In regards to #2, learning to breathe properly and doing so daily can be covered through tai chi, qi gong, or a simple meditation routine. As an added bonus, if you are into martial arts, regular tai chi or qi gong practice will not only help your breathing but will also greatly enhance your balance and flexibility and enhance whatever other martial arts that you do practice.

The challenge in this is that meditating, doing your daily tai chi, even just practicing breathing as suggested by monsterdog requires some commitment and discipline on your end. It seems that any solution short of taking your prescribed medications and hoping for the best is going to take a little work.

I was a pre-med student before I decided to pursue traditional Chinese medicine so I've gotten a little bit of both perspectives. Both paths have their merits, but it ultimately comes down to you and what you can or are willing to integrate into your lifestyle.

Hope you're doing well today Dwayne!

You'll be doing the splits by Blade show :D As for the breathing, one way I learned to breath with the diaphragm was to lay on my back and put a shoe on my chest and stomach. That way I could learn to breath where only the stomach shoe rose. Check with your Dr. cause I'm not one, nor have I stayed at a Holiday Inn. And as Hookah said, hope you are doing well.

Dwayne, don't know if I can say anything else Bro. Just have to mellow. Sometimes just stepping away for a minute and taking a few deep breaths helps Brother. If you needto slow down a notch or TWO do it. I have had to reevaluate a few things in my life for sure.

More Pork, less salt, a lot less sugar. Which is pretty difficult to do since most pork is accompanied with both salt and sugar.

So Bacon is usually out. Doing pulled pork with a low sodium and low sugar rub would be the best bet.

Mmmmm. Pork.

Drink!!!. . . .Lots!!!. . . . Often. . . .

If you stay hammered, the stress can't get to you. . .

This has worked for me for years. . . .

No one ever tells me to "relax" because I'm usually piled up on the floor in the grinding room with a half finished GFD and an empty bottle of scotch!!!

Let's De-Stress. . . .

Jerry

If there is one thing I do appreciate more than good advice, its bluntness. My grandfather always said that a good swift kick in the butt does more to clarify the mind than hours in therapy. :D He was a hot top roofer.

Its not a problem of worth it, its a problem of not even having that much in the bank at any given time. I'd love to hire you to collect on a few outstanding orders. :p

Check your email for an offer for free medical help. Also, if you want a high quality blood pressure cuff I can send you one (I have a few brand new ones that I pick the best one for you and drop in the mail today).

How much would a Dr.'s visit run you?

My aim with this thread is to find alternative methods of blood pressure control. Hopefully natural and non chemical. I haven't been on a prescription in as long as I can remember and I dont intend to do so unless I have no other choice.

We've got a LOT of info to cover here and I cant thank everyone enough for the help. I've already discovered a few things that I haven't been doing that I need to do.

I have been watching my water intake and found out that I dont drink nearly enough, especially working in an un air conditioned shop.

I do take fish oil, but not enough according to one post, and I am checking out that salmon oil. It looks to be good stuff!

More to come!

Prayin for u brother.
