Anyone seen the Benchmade 710 in M4 steel for sale by pre-order over on knifeworks.com? Apparently it's a limited edition of 300... I'm wondering how cool that foliage green G-10 would look on it.

Anyone picked up one of these?

Roger has started cashing in, so I guess they'll start shipping next week

I got a call asking if I wanted it but I found out that they changed the handles from micarta to g10 :( The g10 on the 710 sucks and it slippery

I'm getting one. Got my call and supplied the appropriate information.

I have one of the M4 Gaucho knives and the steel behaves similar to M2 (by what little I've used and sharpened it, anyway). The M4 may be better than M2, but only time will tell.

I've had a 710HS in M2 for about five years and have always liked it a lot. The M2 takes a very fine edge and holds it a long time. If M4 is any better than M2, then it will be a great steel.

I ordered one of the M4 versions, and really look forward to getting it. I had a second NIB M2 which I sold a year or so ago. I made a pretty good profit on the sale but came to regret letting it go, so the M4 kind of makes up for it.

If you like the 710 the M4 is a good bargain. The old M2s have been selling for prices much higher than what Roger is charging for the M4 version.

I got my call from Knifeworks a couple of days ago.

Anyway, way to go Roger and Benchmade!

Is the M4-version handle identical to the D2-version except for color?

I haven't been able to find a pic.

...I wish BM would put out an M4 806!!

Yup, I would've picked one up, but benchmade's G-10 is almost disgusting on that knife and the stryker. Their rukus G-10/micarta handle is a LOT better.

For years, many in the knife community have lamented the fact that Benchmade no longer used M2 in their knives. When a 710M2 is available - a rare event - it invariably commands a very high price.

Now Benchmade comes out with a 710 LE in M4, and folks suddenly seem leery about it.

I find that odd. :)

I think the blade is uncoated too, which is even more appealing to me.

If they made a 910 Stryker, in its original form, plain edge, coated, M4....
I'd be interested.

Until then, my 910HS is my folder holy grail.

Not sure if that is a plus - I read somewhere that M4 may rust more readily than M2.

But, since Benchmade seems reluctant to use the boron coatings, I'll deal with the issue.

i emailed knifeworks about the blade, just got it back today, he says it will be satin finished.foliage green might be similar to the spyderco military d2 handle. as far as m4 steel;.CPM M4 High Speed Tool Steel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CPM M4 is a special purpose high-speed tool steel, containing a high level of vanadium. M4 is tougher and more wear resistant than M2 and M3 in high speed cutting applications involving light cuts.

CPM M4 also comes in several modifications including high carbon (HC), which offers a better hardening response during treating. Additionally, the high sulfur (HS) modification, standard in larger diameter stock, allows for improved machinability and grindability over traditional M4 steel.

As with all CPM steels, CPM M4 us created using Crucible’s patented Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, which provides a highly homogeneous, stable, grindable, and tough product compared to steels created using traditional metallurgy.

Chemical Characteristics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carbon 1.42%
Chromium 4.00%
Molybdenum 5.25%
Vanadium 4.00%
Tungsten 5.50%
Manganese 0.30% - 0.70%
Sulfur 0.06% - 0.22%

I'm confused. M4 does seem to rust easily. If the blade is coated, fine. But a satin finish is the worst way to treat a rust-prone steel.

Nonetheless, I have one on order. Pretty excited.

Does anyone do after-market coating?

maybe DLC can still be applied to individual blades, several people had posted pics of personal blades they had sent in and treated.

I don't think satin is too bad, beadblast is the absolute worst, imo. I've had 410 stainless develop spots within a day.

ag russell has this stuff called rust free, its like a thick clear oil, works good on my carbon v master hunter, ive seen other protecting oils & wipes as well. what about that renaisance wax?
