Bm 710 m4??

ag russell has this stuff called rust free, its like a thick clear oil, works good on my carbon v master hunter, ive seen other protecting oils & wipes as well. what about that renaisance wax?

I think Tuf-Cloth/Tuf Glide would work well.

Ren Wax doesn't provide the same level of corrosion protection, although it is great stuff for its intended applications.
And I also like Rust Free, but it would wipe off when you used the blade - IIRC it's really more for coating blades for storage.

I plan to just rinse and dry it it if I've cut something acidic. If I store it I'll put a coat of mineral oil on it.

I've carried and used carbon steel knives since 1968. Most of my kitchen knives are carbon steel. I've never had a problem with rust. If you're going on a trip on the ocean or a rainforest, by all means prefer one of your stainless folders. But if you take care of your carbon steel and use common sense, you'll be fine.

Just FYI I've spoken to Roger and he mentioned that if you haven't given him your CC number and finalized the order now is the time to call/email in an do so.

They should be shipping out from Benchmade soon and he's got orders for 283 of them, so they probably won't last much longer.

my cc was charged

an email about that would have been nice, saw it when I checked my statement online :(

how about now... 2 weeks after my card was charged, does anyone have one of these knives?

I'm a little more patient. These special projects can be a nightmare to pull off, and Knifeworks is dependent on other people's schedules and priorities. Two weeks early credit charge seems reasonable for this kind of custom sprint run. Lots of merchants would have required the money up front.

However, it would be nice if Knifeworks posted an update on its website every week or two. The current announcement still thinks it possible to get these knives by Christmas.

All in all, though, I'm just happy Knifeworks put this project together at such a low cost.

i emailed knifeworks about the blade, just got it back today, he says it will be satin finished.foliage green might be similar to the spyderco military d2 handle. as far as m4 steel;.CPM M4 High Speed Tool Steel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CPM M4 is a special purpose high-speed tool steel, containing a high level of vanadium. M4 is tougher and more wear resistant than M2 and M3 in high speed cutting applications involving light cuts.

CPM M4 also comes in several modifications including high carbon (HC), which offers a better hardening response during treating. Additionally, the high sulfur (HS) modification, standard in larger diameter stock, allows for improved machinability and grindability over traditional M4 steel.

As with all CPM steels, CPM M4 us created using Crucible’s patented Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, which provides a highly homogeneous, stable, grindable, and tough product compared to steels created using traditional metallurgy.

Chemical Characteristics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carbon 1.42%
Chromium 4.00%
Molybdenum 5.25%
Vanadium 4.00%
Tungsten 5.50%
Manganese 0.30% - 0.70%
Sulfur 0.06% - 0.22%
....
Damn! That's a alot of Molybdenum and Tungsten! That thing must be as hard and wear resistant as hell.

I talked to them this morning. They should ship whithin a couple days. They have, or are just getting them in from benchmade. That's where the hold up has been.

I asked about the M4 Ti Lums while I was on the phone. I get the impression later this month, or next for those.

In my experience, The M4 is very easy to sharpen and takes an excellent edge for such wear resistant, tough steel. I could use it as an all around, all purpose steel. There's not many knife steels I don't have, including a bunch of the more obscure ones like OU31, R2, etc., and M4 is a great one IMO. It's expensive, and the heat treat is high, and extensive so I doubt it will ever be more than a niche steel, but like ZDP it does what it does really well.

BTW, to me, it's easier to get a screaming, hair whittling edge on it than ZDP or S30. It strops up wonderfully. Joe

Mine has shipped (got a UPS tracking number). No one outside of Benchmade knew it was going to be coated including Roger at KnifeWorks...

Ah bummer, I canceled mine because I didn't think it was coated. Now I don't have the funds to order another one

Argh! I've been waiting for this knife for so long... and yet I think it looks ugly in green and black. On the other hand, that might push me into buying the Gaucho...

... I bought the Gaucho. I actually really like the blade shape, though I'm sure it'll be a pain to sharpen.

In reality it was my foliage green D2 Spyderco Military whispering in my ear that swayed me away from the 710. She didn't want the competition.
