Boiling Water: Container

I'm going to see if my welder buddy can make me up a stainless storm kettle, he's a tig welding machine so it should be easy for him.

Cool! Me too! Me too! :p We could probably keep your buddy busy for quite a while! :D

I too use the Nalgene/Space Saver SS Cup & bottle jacket setup. I use the insulated jackets made by Outdoor Research though (REI sells them).

I do wish the space saver cups also came in a 750 ml size...right now they come in 500 ml size...the extra depth could hold more soup or whatever. (and be a bidder shovel I guess!).

Also, one thing I'd like to see on the cups is some sort of locking mechanism for the handles. I've had to "chase" the handles sometimes. Overall though...I like the setup.

I am with you on the handles. 750 ml... I don't know if I want my cup to ride any higher on the bottle, I don't want to give up my duct tape. :D

Some of our scouts wrap duct tape around their Nalgene bottle so they will always have some. The scouts from the next troop over wrap duct tape on their Nalgenes when they are used for pee bottles. Bummer to get them mixed up eh?

I curious why someone would pee in a nalgene bottle. Is there something I don't know?

when its cold you tend to pee in a bottle and seal it up so it keeps you warm and you dont have to get cold by l;eav ing tent/sleepingbag

It's no fun to go outside the tent at 3:30 in the morning just to pee. Personally I use a 20oz Pepsi bottle wrapped in duct tape instead of a Nalgene.

Oh that makes sense. The coldest I've ever camped was in the 20's so I just go outside to take a leak!

You could replace the cap keeper with braided steel leader and then you'd have a fire resistant loop to fish it out of the fire.

I sure wish these had a wider mouth, like a Nalgene bottle. It would make ithe KK a viable storage container as well. I looked at the 40 oz. model, which apparently will fit in Nalgene sleeves, but the narrow mouth isn't compatible with water filters & whatnot. I bet they'll offer a wide mouth before long.

How do you all think this http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=188&PRODID=65398 would hold up under the requirements we are lookin at here. Its size would allow carry in even a medium sized fanny pack...with asorteds goodies stored inside, of course! Thoughts?

Interesting.
Might be the makings of a good PSK container.

Nice! I think I saw one of these at REI while browsing.
But, Didn't look like it would hold 24 ozs??
The wide-mouth top converting for the various bottle-attached water filters
is great.

Sure, why not. You could so the same with a titanium pot. Comes with a mesh stuff bag too. Duct tape it shut or add a couple inner tube rubber bands. IMHO, it is the lightest and most usable option.

There's NATO mess kit that comes close to the same as the recipe box. This vendor says they are French and my local favorite surplus store said they are Dutch. They are heavy.

BCB carries a metal mess kit style box and Sigg makes one near identical they call a snack box-- in 2 sizes. They say it is not for cooking, but I say whooey on that, except the lid has a seal in it. A little tin foil will make a dandy cook lid.

Coleman made nesting aluminum boxes for their single burner stoves to be used for cook pots. They are fairly large and heavy, but would make great PSK boxes. I found a version of it here listed as a GI mess kit. Rubber bands or duct tape to keep it closed. I imagine it would take something about the size of a gas mask bag to haul it. It *might* fit in a canteen pouch. if you are going to haul it in a duffle bag or back pack, a simple stuff sack will do the trick and you can keep the contents in the stuff sack when cooking.

If you really want to get practical, a 26oz Campbell's soup can with a wire bail will work great. It's large enough to hold a good selection of survival gear and I'll bet a lot of the Nalgene one liter holsters would fit it. As above, a stuff sack will keep it all together for cheap and light. If you really want to get crafty, take the top off with a safety style can opener and use it for a fitted lid. A paper clip or a little wire through a couple small holes drilled in the lid will make a dandy handle. You can boil in it for ages without burning through-- just keep water in it at all times when on the fire. Same for Foster's beer cans as pots.
