Boker Trance - Very dissapointed.

Thank you for the offer. I realize you guys have good support and service and I am not knocking you for anything like that. I just wanted to post what happened to my knife. I have no doubt I could have contacted you for a replacement and you would oblige but I am simply not interested. It isn't worth my time (and chatting on a message board is my time I know) to send the knife back. Its only $25 and I can live with it for what it is. I will use it until it breaks down completely then I will throw it away.

If YOU wont go to the effort of complying with a manufacturers warranty procedure, in aid of a knife YOU wanted to diss online as a piece of junk, you have no grounds for complaint.

I would never buy a Boker that was not made in Germany. It's just not a Boker. That knife looks like something for sale at a Gas Station. I am RARELY let down when buying a knife or any product for that matter because I:

Pay attention.
Spend some time.
Spend some money.
Buy only "in house" made.
Buy from the country I live in.

Works for me!

So you live in Austin, but you only buy Bokers made in Germany, and that's because you only buy American?

After reading the reviews I decided to order this knife for an EDC to go along with my spyderco native 3. I have had this knife for a week and it has really let me down. It was very sharp, but brittle. I have cut simple things like rope, paper, plastic ties etc and the blade chips like its made of ice. I have attached a few images to show you what I mean. Also, I had it open and dropped it 3 feet onto carpet. It jammed the locking mechanism and took me 20 minutes of bending and prying just to close it.

If you are thinking about buying one and getting a knife worth more than the $25 it costs - then think again. Next time i'll spend 25 more and get another spyderco - this is my last boker.

Aloha aarong50,

That is NOT the way a Trance should "act". I have cut much worse things than you, and know others who have used my Trance to do the same. It is still in top shape...no blade "made of ice" here, and for a great many thousand owners for that matter.

I accidentally had my Sgt.'s Trance slip out of my hand and fly about 8-10ft. away, and hit...well, slam...tip first onto concrete. YES, I did damage the point, but no big deal.

When the Trance first came out, a co-worker and I used to have throwing "contests" at scrap ply. Our locking and unlocking remained fine, although our pivots loosened. Your carpet dropping incident...um...don't sound right.

You definitely got a defect, and I apologize for that. Why not take the guys who offered you their Trance for free up on the offer? OR, I will just tell the Boker Repair guys to send you one free and bill me. You uh, can make the time for that right?

Can't say anything more that has been already said...

God bless.

You can't get better customer service than that!

Mahalo nui loa, Chad!

Wow... The guy got pumped up for a knife that everyone sings praises for and was disappointed when a 25$ knife turned out to have the quality of a 25$ knife.

Then he gets an additional jolt to the sack when he gets lambasted for being a troll when he vents about it on the internet.

Sometimes when somebody complains about a product it does not mean they are a troll or have an ulterior motive or they are out to dis the manufacturer. They just might be let down in their expectations and letting off a little steam.

Kind of like the kid in Christmas Story when he finally got his Annie Oakley Secret Decoder Ring

sounds like a factory defect,it happens. i have 4 different bokers subcom,s ubclaw, trance and hyper and i use them daily and they are great knives and im 100% pleased with them.

When that person is subsequently offered full warranty service and says it's not worth his time, one does have to wonder, however.

to those of you who have generously offered to buy me a knife that is very honorable to do for a complete stranger. Of course I would never accept but it was very thougtful. I'm not lookng for a new knife or handout and maybe I was a little harsh in my orig post so if I offended anyone I am sorry. I am also grateful and thankful to this community.

Honestly, I don't see this as a Troll post. He was ticked off and wanted to tell Forumites about his experience.

Having said that, for $25 you can't beat a Byrd Meadowlark and similar. Also Kershaw makes some excellent folders close to that range. Finally, even Beretta often has sales on their Airlights, nice underrated AUS8 knife. Good luck.

I had a HORRIBLE experience with a Trance. Can I get my free one now???

Where in my statement did I say that I own any Boker? I am merely stating my guidelines, which are practical and functional. Your stab at my logic certainly displays your own ignorance. I fart in your general direction. ;)

Aloha tomcrx,

Yeah but that's the beauty about the Trance...it does not, and should not behave like a "typical $25 knife".;)

I never called this guy a troll, but having a knife with an edge like ice, and lock jamming from 3ft. onto carpet, it definitely was a defected model he received and I, as well as others wanted to help him out by giving him a "proper" model...

In mass production, sometimes if not always, some "mistakes" fly under the radar. Unfortunately, it sounds as if such was the case for this guy...:( It happens with ALL companies...

And yes, I am more affected by this because it was one of my designs after all, and KNOW how it "should be".;)

God bless all, and take care!

I appreciate your reply and your designs Chad. I think that your response and those of the Boker reps were above reproach and exactly what one expects in this situation. I think by posting you made a bad situation better and kept a customer.

I was being harsh towards those that were trying to read an internet conspiracy into the post. I did not see that. I just see someone with high hopes that was a little let down. You know how us boys get with their toys:)

Aloha tomcrx,

Roger that my friend...especially when the toy was one of my designs! I know I have NO control over production QC, but...well, ya know what I am saying right?:o I mean...I designed that "toy"!!!:p

God bless you and yours!

Hope Sal brings out the Lava in FRN. That way it would see wider distribution and bigger sales. One of the best little big blades I have used.

Mahalo tomcrx,

Yup, agree. I think/know that the SS Scales and/or the price prevented that lil' one from doing as good as it *could have*...ah well...

Whoops, hijacking a thread here so...um...well, the "ball" is in the court of aarong50...

Take care and God bless.

I can see being bitter, but I have been around long enough to know that sometimes you get a lemon, whether it be knife, gun or car. I don't own a trance (though I do own a subclaw), but I am more likely to buy one now based on the response from the maker and the designer.

If it were me in Aarongs shoes right now, the responses and offers to make it right would at least justify a second chance. I mean, look, as you said, it's a $25.00 knife. You aren't going to go broke, but look at how much the company and the designer are willing to do to justify you spending $25.00 of your hard-earned money. I don't think I would take another members knife, but I would damn sure let the company fix the mistake. Not only is your knife better, but it gives them a chance to study the defect and determine if this is an ongoing problem or not, you know?

Anyway, while I disagree with your attitude somewhat, I appreciate the review because any company that goes this far to make a $25.00 purchase right is a company whose products I will take a second look at.

Absolutely, and I'm more likely to buy a Boker even tucked away down here in Aus, if I can communicate with the very people who make / design it.
