Be on the look out for this beautiful SHMS. Stolen/missing in New York City.
USPS tracking shows "Undeliverable As Addressed" AND "Delivered" on June, 12
USPS employees at delivery PO tell me it has been signed for but can not tell me who signed for it. Recipient DOES NOT have this knife in his hands.

I'll update as I get more info but I fear this knife will not bee seen again. The SHMS is 0.282" thick, has black quilted micarta scales, brass rivets, smooth coating, double cut spine and original sheath. The knife has not been used but there are marks near the edge from sheath insertion.

That is a fiber on the blade, not a scratch.

Well, that sucks.

What can the community learn from this ugly event, how can we step up our game when shipping to protect both buyer and seller?

Restricted signature confirmation is an option, requires the person whose name is on the box to sign for it in person, else it goes back to the PO and a note is left. The service costs a few extra bucks only.

If theyre signature was anything like mine you couldnt read it anyway. And i guess it depends on where it was delivered to yhe person who signed

Wow! What an awesome piece to lose that way! Sorry for both of you!

This brings a question to mind, how does everyone else insure a package like this? Double the value? If you don't, someone is out.

I'll be checking into this for future shipments.

They can't divulge the name even though said person has likely just commited theft??
You are supposed to sign and print for the package. The signature is an unreadable squiggle and there is no printed name. This is a fail on the carriers part, IMO.

Unfortunately, I've been through this once before. It is a pain in the ass to file an insurance claim and jump through all their hoops. It took months before the claim was paid and I had to submit everything twice.
You have to prove to USPS the value of the item shipped with receipts or another acceptable (to them) form of proof. You can insure a package for what ever ammount you want, you just have to prove it if something goes wrong and you have to file. If you can't they won't pay.

I'm now waiting on a supervisor to call me back after she talks to the carrier who delivered the package. I'm not holding my breath on this:grumpy: If I haven't heard from her by the 20th I'll try to get in touch with the Postmaster of the PO.

Sounds like everything else the government does, so very sad!

I wasn't thinking clear on my question, you both wouldn't be out, and there wouldn't be a reason to double insure, my apologies!

No, we both won't be out. I will be refunding the buyer and submit the claim. I'm just wondering if they will deny my claim because it was supposedly delivered.

Has anyone filed a claim through paypal Sellers Protection? I'm wondering if that would be easier and less BS than dealing with a government agency. I'd like to use the banned smiley here :D

I've only had to claim 1 package. To "prove" value, since the Busse knives are considered collectables, I had to print up sale prices from ebay, and same items recently sold from the exchange. Through the Post Office.

It is the understanding of BF rules/practice that insurance protects the seller, because the assumption is that the seller will make certain that the buyer is satisfied with the transaction. So a seller gets insurance to protect himseld, is how I look at it. And you can only insure for what you can prove to USPS is the value. At least, that is what I have learned here and go by.

I have reached out to a BF member who is knowledgeable on USPS issues, and hope that he will jump in here and teach us.

Plus if they knew they were signing for something that didn't belong to them they could've signed it "John Jacob Jingleheimerschmitt". Most likely did.
