BOLO: Stolen/Missing SHMS::UPDATE 9/23/15 Insurance Claim DENIED Again

As I have said before- when a package is scanned it records a GPS coordinate to that position. The supervisor can look up that position on a map and give an address at which the bar code was scanned. I am surprised they didn't do that first.

To file an insurance claim you need 3 things. MAILING RECEIPT -- PROOF OF VALUE -- PROOF OF NON DELIVERY.

In this case I would find out were that package was scanned for both of those 'events' and go from there.

How did you ship it?

You can go to USPS.com and file you domestic claim online... or your suppose to be able to.

I shipped, using paypal shipping, USPS Priority Insured without signature confirmation. A signature is still required since it is insured for over $200.
When I talked to the people at the delivery PO they didn't even know it was an insured package until I told them so I don't know what they were looking at on their computer screen. I'm sure telling me where the events occurred is beyond their comprehension at this point (sarcasm). I still haven't heard back from the supervisor, surprise, surprise. If I don't hear from her today I will be initiating the claim this weekend to try and speed things up and then try and talk to the Postmaster starting Monday.

I've only had to claim 1 package. To "prove" value, since the Busse knives are considered collectables, I had to print up sale prices from ebay, and same items recently sold from the exchange. Through the Post Office.

Some people make that hard to do by deleting their prices in the exchange,,,

Proof of value can be from a dealer, from the manufacturer, or a purchase receipt. When I was a claims clerk (years ago) EBay stuff wouldn't cut it. Things might have changed by now.

True, which is a very stupid thing to do and serves them right when something happens and they can't use the thread to prove their sale price.

Other boards' sales forums do not allow you to edit the original text of the sales ad. I've requested that before on this forum and was told too hard to police. Asking price doesn't necessarily reflect a private agreed upon price but it would be a HUGE improvement to our exchange on bladeforums. Leave in the price. :)

It makes it more difficult to gage what a fair asking price for a relatively fast sale should be.

Eta: its fun to see what blades are going for. Plus its annoying to see "asking$old" etc.

If the buyer paid via PAYPAL, don't you have a receipt indicating value?

At least one real-life dealer is on this forum and would be able to provide a value. Discuss it with him.

Any update on the missing package? Or is it gone with no hope of recovery?

I'm still waiting for the supervisor to call me back. She was going to talk to the carrier and see if they could remember anything about the supposed delivery.
I doubt she ever talked to the carrier and I'm sure she will never call me back.

I have refunded the buyer and initiated an insurance claim. Hopefully the claim will be approved or the package will be found but I have my doubts on this one. I fear the knife is gone and I am out the money.

One thing I have a question about and maybe someone with more knowledge about insurance claims can answer - but why do you have to prove the lost item's value? If you pay to insure the package for $x and that package is not delivered and/or lost, shouldn't you just get $x? I mean if it has been proven the item was not delivered correctly - or more to the point, if the carrier cannot prove that it *was* delivered correctly, why wouldn't that be enough for a claim to get paid immediately? Otherwise, what's the actual point of insurance?

I just don't get why:
1. the burden of proof is on you
2. you have to prove the lost item's value

Follow the money. If you promise a service and imply that its easy but make it difficult to claim or collect, a percentage will not bother or grow frustrated and quit, leaving the provider with the fee(s) paid up front. On the other hand, a possible scam might be to insure a brick for $10,000 and arrange to have it intercepted or stolen, then claim the loss of a "valuable item" and collect the insured "value". I understand their caution.
The point I'm trying to make is to persevere to the completion of your goal: the recovery of the lost or stolen property or the receipt of the items insured proven value. Yes, its a pain in the ass and yes, bad people suck and make life more difficult for everyone but don't let them win by quitting and letting them win. Fight back.
Pete
