Boots

I wear Limmer's.

They're on my feet 12+ hours a day. I wear them on the bike, work and woods.

The pair I have on now is about to get it's third set of soles.

They work for me.

I love my Limmer custom boots.
Best hiking boot made, period.

I'm on concrete 8 to 12 hours a day. It's Doc Marten for me. Thay wear great and feel even better. Really good arch and ankle support.

Chuck is right: for concrete Docs are fantastic. The air soles in the footbed are VERY comfortable, most of them-if not all-are liner-free, and they last forever. I paid 20$ for a pair at Marshall's when I was a freshman, and they lasted through college.

Not sure what kind of boots we are talking about, but I love Danners and Redwings. If you don't mind laying down some cash, check out Whites.

I would like to try Filson boots, but haven't coughed up the dough for those yet.

Man, those Whites look nice... Have you actually worn them, or just admired from a distance?

I am NaviHawk,,,,,,,,,, and those boots ARE the BEST........ real pricey though,,,,, they offer them in reg. sizes or for an extra $75. they send you a measuring kit. you trace your foot and measure around approx 20 or so places , and they build em to fit exactly. WELL WORTH IT. No break in period,,,,,they fit perfectly. You will be paying over $500. a pair though.Stock boots,,,,not customised or custom fit can be purchased for a bit cheaper,,,,like $350,,,,plus, depending on which style.

:eek:I'll be getting a pair after my divorce.:D

I weight 230. That matters. I go through a sole in just over a year, say 14 months. If you weigh less and wear the boots less often, that will, obviously, be a factor.

Weigh LESS?? Than 230#??? I haven't weighed 230# since I was like 10 years old!

You little fellers!:D

By the way, I have a pair of Vasque I like pretty well. More for hiking than work but nice boots. And they came is 15! I know Redwings do but most don't.

Funny, Imagine started a thread over at the Swamp on the same topic.
A well made pair of boots should not have to be "broken in" This is a myth. They should fit correctly from the store. Try on numerous pairs of boots until you find a pair that works for you. I have owned more boots than I can count. I finally settled on a Red Wing model. They are like slippers on my feet. I like redundancy. I like redundancy.

"broken in" can mean different things, and I beleive whole heartedly that ALL boots need to be broken in before they will fit truly comfortably for 95% of feet.

It's not that they fit incorrectly or that they are too tight or loose in any given space, it's that the leather is generally crafted with the same stiffness across all surfaces, and not all of them undergo the same stresses. there are 2 area's that are a root cause of initial discomfort, the heal at the achilles tendon, and the front of the ankle right before the meta tarsels. These are the two places that need to be able to bend the most without pushing leather and metal into the tissue of the foot and ankle. the stiffer the leather, the harder that bend is going to push into you, and the more discomfort you will feel, especially when it's so stiff that it distorts across the whole line of leather containing the lace gromets.. a good oiling and a week should get them to where their good, any more then that and they better get really comfortable when they do break in.

I'm a big fanner of danner acadia's, but I have found that they need really good insoles to be wearable. otherwise my heels felt like I had been standing on concrete. I'm currently wearing some EXTREMELY high end boots, brahma steel toe canvas side boots. don't know the model name...

I hear ya Navihawk,,,,,,,,, my wife would flip over the $250. Redwings,,,,nevermind the $500. Wesco's,,,, If she actually was informed of the true price!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. But (there is always a but...) A good pair of boots should not be uncomfortable out the box. They should fit the foot well to begin with and hot spots should be minimal. If there are hot spots the boot is not properly fitted. A custom boot from White, Wesco, etc. fit to ones foot will be a comfortable ride right out of the box. The boot will "break in" but this will be the leather of the boot stretching at bend points, such as the arch and ankle. A good boot should not have to break in ones foot. If you are getting blisters from a new pair of boots, you have got the wrong boots.

I agree. I have never been able to wear a cheap pair of boots, shoes,or sneakers. If you want comfort, you have to pay.

I've been wearing a pair of Asolo all-leather uppers Hikers for 8 years. Aside from looking "unnew", they are in perfect condition. The sole is perfect, no cracks or lines in the leather and the integrity of the shoe in regards to the support they offered new, is still like new.
They were about $180 when I bought them new and it was money well spent.

Asolos here too.

A good friend of mine was 6'4" at 14 years old. He is now 19 and 6'6". I figure he will stop growing at 21 or so. He goes through shoes like nobodies business.
HE is not slim by any means. I would put him around 245. If TSHTF, he's on my team...

Redwings SUCK!!!
Danner's are ok, but
White's are the shizzz!!!

Check them out.. http://www.whitesboots.com/
The original Smoke Jumper that "Everyone" has copied.
I have an order for the "Hunter" sitting here I'm mailing tomorrow.

How are these Danners for 'sweaty mofo feet'... :D

I have Danner Acadias - LOVE THEM, but looking for something that holds less sweat in summer on my sweaty feet, but still waterproof, if such an animal exists....

I'm blessed with great foot circulation, an uninsulated Acadia with Goretex- only, keeps the toes toasty down to 26f and sleet... but the downside are swampy feet in the summer..

Any advice?

Thanks,

John

i wear danner pursuit exels (no longer made:()for work. ive had them for 5 years and resoled them once. best boots i have ever owned, and im pretty hard on work boots.

ive tried bates and rockys as well, not even close.

the acadias are almost the same, except the pursuits are all leather, instead of the canvas inserts.

Hell, I drop turds that weigh 230.

I am on my third pair of White's. That is to say, I have purchased a total of 3 pair and had my first two rebuilt twice by White's. The only way to identify the rebuilds is the tongue. The rest of it looks brand new. I have 1 pair 8" logger/smokejumper and 2 pair 10" logger/smokejumper. All other boots, with the exception of Danner, are not worth mentioning.

I walk on yard and mainline ballast (crushed rock) 8-12 hours a day, and climb on and through metal rail cars. I would not trust my feet to anything else.

One thing about White's: you don't break them in, they break your foot in. Prepare to spend some serious time with them to get comfortable.
