If you have a few minutes to read a really long article, check this out: http://www.gq.com/story/the-last-true-hermit?src=longreads

It's a story about a man who lived in solitude in the woods of Maine for 27 years. He survived by stealing food and supplies from local cabins. It's a really fascinating, yet sad article. Very long and well written. I think that the article romanticizes his camp a little, so I found some photos that someone had taken of his place after it had largely had been torn down here. I don't recommend looking at the photos until after you read the article though. It's so interesting/crazy/spooky.

Yeah Cap, there was another guy like this recently, and his camp was almost exactly the same. It was hard to believe that someone would keep a camp like that to live in, and that they kept returning to it.

I saw the article on Reddit, and a lot of folks are romanticizing the situation, saying they wish they could do the same thing. Personally, I find it unsettling. I am not a psychologist, but I feel like in situations like these, there is more than "a desire for solitude", but a mental ilness involved. I'm not saying that's good/bad, I'm just saying it makes me feel a little uneasy about the whole situation. I don't understand/comprehend how someone could live like this. I understand wanting to live in the woods for sure, but like that? I dunno.

They said he may have Asbergers. Hes overwhelmed by the information just looking at someones face. Crazy that he didnt even know why he went out there, and he hadnt even planned to do it. Just drove till he ran out of gas, parked the car and walked into the woods. Something is definitely wrong or at least different with the guy. He didnt even bring gear. Everything he had built the camp with was scavenged or stolen. Looks like a lot of the pics you linked to were post police raid though. The initial camp before tear down wasnt as terrible. Not something to glamorize though. He said he had almost died from lack of food, or from exposure, multiple times. That doesnt sound like fun.

Yes, exactly. I know the photos were post raid, but the photos show how this guy wasn't looking to be "one with the woods" or anything like that. I think the reason why this article is really sticking with me, is that I personally get really uncomfortable, almost afraid, when I see piles of litter in the woods or stumble on a homeless camp. I live in Eugene, Oregon, which is homeless paradise, and have encountered many homeless camps on my adventures on the edge of town. They're always haphazard and gross, never neatly organized shelters. (How I imagine myself living in the woods) Seeing piles of garbage in the woods signals to me mental instability, danger, and abnormality. Reading this article made me realize why I feel so uneasy seeing garbage in the woods. Anwyays, crazy stuff.
