Bose Knives

Nice kitchen knifes. John looks like you really use them alot. A set of Bose kitchen would be great. I'd have to keep a first aid kit over the sink.

Hey Kerry. How bout a little ivory to go with that ebony?

Great knives, great layout, great pics! And to think, that's only part of your Bose collection.

Ed is that the total current Ivory Bose roundup,or are there others ?
What a set !
2toes,that granny peeler looks cool & I agree that little curve in the blade makes a great peeler
Based on the blade of my Reese Bose fixed blade, those kitchen knives & fillets must be some slicers!
Thanks for all the posts

I just creamed my Pants Ed
Fantastic Set..Ive told you on a few occasions that acid etched congress is one of the coolest ever
You have a Wonderful set of there!!

Is there any reason for a hand rubbed blade vs a scothbrite finished blade in Bose knives?
Here's my take.. Tony and Reese mostly use D2, 440V and ATS34. Some steels are meant for work and don't take as nice a hand rubbed finish, A2, D2, 440V. If its going to be used and get scratched up, it will look better longer with a belt finish. ATS34 isnt a super steel for cutting, but it finishes beautifully. D2 will finish and cut well, so you find D2 in both finishes. 440V doesnt finish well, so you'll never find a Bose 440V with a hand rubbed finish.
My A2 ivory congress was hand rubbed, THEN acid etched. Extra work, but Reese thought it would take the etch better that way.

So there you have it, 440V always belt finished, ATS34 always hand rubbed, D2 either way, A2 any number of ways, I think. But steel choice at Wilfred Works isnt just a matter of desired finish. If the pattern requires crinked (bent) blades, like a congress, then forget about 440V. It doesnt bend. A2 and ATS34 do. Not sure about D2. Another factor is thickness. A pattern like a 3.25 needs a blade stock that isnt available in 440V. So you end up with something like a 3.25 micarta shadow WT from Reese with hand rubbed ATS34 blades. Not a combination you'd expect to see. My personal favorite is 440V with the belt finish.

Nice group of knifes Ed. How do you decide what to carry each day?
Almost every day its either a Tony WT in stag and 440V or the Reese Ivory congress. If I had a Bose peanut, I'd be carrying that too. But I don't. I'd trade for one if someone is interested. Weekends, add a BP. Camping, break out the swayback jack for whittling. Lately I don't have time to give it any more thought than that.

Ed, ya gotta be careful using "always" and "never":D.

The knife in my avatar is ATS-34 with a belt finish. If the boys know that a knife is NOT going to be used, it's MORE LIKELY to get a hand rubbed finish than a belt finish, regardless of the steel used....I THINK! ;)

Kerry, thanks for the correction. You uhhh more likely have the inside scoop. We can ummmm more likely count on you. :D
Seriously, was the steel choice on your knife driven by the stock thickness that's needed for that knife or what?

I make my share of mis-statements. Seems like the way I learn most of the time is by screwin up.

Here's what I think happened....

Imagine, if you will, Tony thinkin to himself...

"Now let's see, Kerry said that if I EVER get the chance to make him a knife, he wanted a swayback jack, two blade. I already have a heat treated set here in ATS-34 but he needs a ground finish because I KNOW he is going to use it." :)

I don't know if that is exactly what happened but it can easily happen that way. I know at times they have several blade/spring sets of ATS-34 heat treated by Paul Bos and available to choose from.

The 440v and D2 sets are often times HT'd in shop and can be prepared fairly quickly but they like to send off mass quantities of ATS-34 sets to Bos.

BTW...the boseknives.com/links.html page has been updated to include the 3 tutorials that Tony and I have done so far.
