No worries my friends.
Burl has quite a few natural "checks" in the grain and this appears to be just a natural check that was there before the handles were attached and shaped.
Many of these anomalies are not visible until after shaping.
All natural materials are eternally subject to cracks and checking from a variety of circumstances including humidity, excessive heat or cold, etc. . .
But great news! It's a Busse so you have nothing to worry about. Use it however you like and if it becomes a problem we will take care of it.
Dan was correct in telling you to contact us, as that is how we have instructed him and others to handle situations like this.
Sorry for any confusion that this may have caused but rest assured that we back ALL of our knives so you never have anything to worry about.
Unless the seller has done a modification that caused the issue then the responsibility falls on us.
No mods were done to this knife so it's all on us my friends!
You can always feel free to send it in, if you prefer, and we'll give it a thorough inspection.
On a side note: Dan Huang, is a friend of ours, and we have never had any first-hand experiences with him that were not top notch.
So, here are some positive things that you might want to share about Dan Huang:
The overwhelming majority of feedback (99.9%) that we have received from customers about Dan has always been very positive.

Dan has anonymously donated to many charitable events, throughout the years, without hoping or trying to get publicity for his kindness.
When Dan suspected that he had purchased a number of knives that had been stolen from a Busse forum member, he contacted the owner, who wasn't even aware that his knives had been stolen, and returned them without any expectation of being reimbursed.

The list of kindnesses that Dan has been involved in is endless.
Let's Drink,
Jerry
