Bowie critique/WIP...UPDATED!!!

The hole in the tang is 3/16" but I put an 1/8" pin in it. I figured I would give myself some "wiggle room". The epoxy should fill in the space around it. I will trace out the handle in my sketch and see how I like it in person. Thanks.

Having extra wiggle room around your pin is fine. The issue is how little metal is left above and below the hole. If the tang was much wider there and could accept a 3/16" hole with plenty of steel remaining that would be preferable.

I got everything rough shaped this afternoon. I don't like how the butt came out but it is what it is at this point. I wanted more swell to it but I kinda got a coke bottle shape. I wish I would have made the guard a little longer and a little thicker. I will say that it feels great in my hand though. I'm happy with the overall profile but will try and leave more swell in it next time. I will do some more shaping and sanding on it tomorrow and post some more of my progress.

Matt,

You're doing great. The handle has good alignment with the ricasso and the swell looks comfortable. I think as far as the flare is concerned, the block you started with was a bit narrow for what you had planned. If you had more width at the butt of the handle, you could've rotated the butt downward a bit and gotten the look you wanted. But you have to work with what you have. See below. Also, take a look at what the guard might look like if thinned out a bit. It's going to look fine when you're done.

Well I think I'm satisfied at this point(as satisfied as I can be) with how it's turned out. As I said in the first post this is a little out of the box for me. There have been a lot of firsts in this knife and I have learned a lot of new things. Thanks to all that have helped me out and a special thanks to Marc who has kind of been a coach to me throughout this process. Over the next few days I will finish the handle with Tru oil and get everything finished up. I will post pics when finished.
