After a long and rewarding search on Bowie knives and their history, I've finally decided on one.

My wife and I will be attending the celebration of the right to carry a Bowie knife (or anything else you want :)) in San Antonio, Texas on September 2.

I talked her in to getting a Bowie for herself.(wasn't very hard)
I tried to talk her into something like the Bark River Vest Pocket Bowie but she's wanting something larger. I've tried to explain to her about how heavy the larger ones are but she thinks a Bowie should have at least a 10" blade. She's not petite but she's not an Amazon either. I'm also concerned a little with the handle size as some of the Bowles can have rather large handles, great for me, not so much for her. I think we can talk her into a 7-8" blade.

So for my question. Can any of the ladies, or men, suggest anything for us to look at?

She wants something old school-traditional. She is familiar with Bark River and Cold Steel but likes Bark River much better. Looking to spend no more than $350-$400.
Oh and it has to be in stock now. No time to wait for custom, but I will be perusing the customs for sale.

Thanks,
Matt

How about the
Cold Steel 39LABMS Natchez Bowie
KnifeCenter has it in stock. Very traditional, except for the sheath.
Or perhaps (also in stock at KC) the
Bear & Son 14-3/8" White Smooth Bone Bowie Knife - also very traditional including sheath.

KC gives fast service and low shipping cost. Just search their website for "bowie" for lots of options, just be sure it is in stock.

Old school, Cold Steel Frontier Bowie
That Case with the white handle is could be a nice lady's accessory. (If she's into that.)
Winchester sells an imported traditional looking Bowie. The sheath is nylon, not so traditional. But it's a tenth your budget. That'd buy a mighty nice custom sheath.

Why try to talk her into something other than what she already expressed to you that she wants? She told you what she wants. She knows it's big and heavy but it's what she wants. Maybe I'm overly sensitive to it, but I don't go for the whole "I know you think you know what you want but I'm going to tell you what you really want."

Anyway, based on what she said she wants, how about Svord VonTempsky Bowie. It's authentic looking and supposed to be damned good. One is high on my list of imminent purchases.

For some reason she didn't care for the Natchez. I know she does want a leather sheath.
She did like the looks of the Bear and Sons Bowles
Thanks

Showed her the Frontier. Not pretty enough. Haha

Never said I was going to tell her to do anything, just make suggestions. She knows absolutely nothing about knives of this size.
And yes, you're being a little oversensitive. :D:p

The double hollow grind creates a large blade that dances in the wind. Light in the hand.

14.25" over all with a 8.75" blade. AEB-L at 62RC. Elk handle with a cocobolo spacer.

image.jpg image.jpg How's this one for traditional?
9.5" blade, about $80
12c27 steel, cocobolo handle scales
I know it's a copy of a replica of a copy...

Yup. That's entirely possible. I just get my cackles up when I hear things like "she wants this but maybe we can talk her into something else." Comes across like pandering paternalism.

Anyway, check out that Von Tempsky. It sounds like what she had described and is a total beast.

Edit to add and example: my wife wanted a BM Grip. She picked out the tanto with partial serrations. Inside i was like "ugh! Gross!"
I explained the ideas behind which parts of the blade do what work, how different shapes are good for different tasks etc... ultimately she wanted what she wanted and I wasn't going to tell her otherwise. She still loves that knife. The fact that she carries a knife she likes makes me happy. No need to talk her into something she wouldn't have liked as much.
