Bowie for wifie

Yup. That's entirely possible. I just get my cackles up when I hear things like "she wants this but maybe we can talk her into something else." Comes across like pandering paternalism.

Anyway, check out that Von Tempsky. It sounds like what she had described and is a total beast.

Edit to add and example: my wife wanted a BM Grip. She picked out the tanto with partial serrations. Inside i was like "ugh! Gross!"
I explained the ideas behind which parts of the blade do what work, how different shapes are good for different tasks etc... ultimately she wanted what she wanted and I wasn't going to tell her otherwise. She still loves that knife. The fact that she carries a knife she likes makes me happy. No need to talk her into something she wouldn't have liked as much.
Not really interested in your opinion, please take it somewhere else

I found different handle options
Another good suggestion to look at. Thanks

The Camillus OVB Bowie designed by Jerry Fisk. You can still find them on the auction sites and maybe the exchange in your price range.

Carries like it was made of smoke, handles like a dream. Sheath is a thing of beauty and only adds to the carry-ability.

They came in a variety of handle materials... I have one in fiddleback maple and one in desert ironwood... both are awesome.

Who makes this?
Bear and Son, Jacksonville AL. It's not as nice as the customs posted, but for the price of one... I have 2 of them, and each one is different. They aren't perfect, but like I said for the price, not bad at all.

Very, very nice.
Just checked out a couple on the bay.
Thanks

I must have missed that one.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great suggestions. She has narrowed it down to just a few now.
We will visit a local custom maker on Saturday before a decision is made.

My wife was surprised at the timely responses from the members here on BF. She really enjoyed your participation.

It didn't surprise me at all. Best bunch of folks I've encountered on any forum.

Rats! I read the thread title and was hoping someone wanted to swap me a Bowie for the wife.

I'll just keep on dreaming.

What about doing a Ontario old hickory 14" butcher knife project ?
They may not be what the majority of people imagine when they think if a Bowie, but large butcher knives just like the old hickory were extremely popular on the frontier and far more common that what most think of.
You two could have fun together doing something like a sinew wrap on the handle and make a simple rustic / primitive style leather or hide sheath for it.

This is just a thought that nobody be else has recommended, and things like this are always fun and more special.

The knives are in stock now, the materials aren't hard to get at Tandy leather ...ect, and it's a project that could be completed in a couple of afternoons depending on what you do.

Won't happen this time but that's a great idea.
Very cool:cool:

I'd go Full Custom. But since you're strapped for time that probably won't work I'd also go for either the Russell (they're amazing knives) or something from Blackjack. Personally I like the 1-7.

Nice suggestion. We will be looking at something similar to that with a longer blade Saturday.

He does not take orders, but I think one of the recent works from GL Drew would be worth a look, or check out Tim ridge of Swamp fox knives.
