Its looking good. Have you thought of a teardrop shape to add some contour?

Shane I have been working on a design for my first knife. My grandfather made me a knife 2 years ago and no offense to him it doesn't do what I want. Yes I cherish it dearly and rotate it in at camp it's just not doin it. I'm working on getting materials and clearing it with my girlfriend to build a setup in our one bedroom apartment lol. The struggle is real my friend. You have jolted my brain and I can't stop it haha

It's almost done. I hand sanded the handle up to 2000 grit

Then its time for some tru oil on the handle. I put some Vaseline on the guard to block the oil from it. Then I rubbed the first layer of tru oil on with my finger. After a quick wipe here it is.

A couple more coats of oil, then sharpening and sheath making.

(Oh, and I do have a real camera:D... I'll take some better shots once the handle is done).

Well here is the Bowie finished up. I haven't put an edge on it yet as I still have to make a sheath.

Thanks for your patience for those of you who have followed along, and thanks for the help along the way.

Very nice Shane, well made. Jess
(BTW, I thought of you yesterday while I was hand sanding. My least favorite thing.)

Turned out killer. Still reads bowie to me but I like the aesthetic better than a traditional style bowie (clip point and double sided guard).

Very nice. I like it alot. I'm glad I lived long enough to see it finished. Lol. Only kidding. Forgive my impatience. If I was to make any nit picking comment. the handle appears slightly large for the blade. Perhaps only a photo perspective. And the elegance of the blade and handle are not matched by the simple guard. Just my opinion. Hope you are open to input. If not, Disregard the last half of my post and read the part where I like it alot. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Ricky I'm glad you made it through to the end... I appreciate the feedback as well. It is a fairly large handle, but in person it all looks balanced.

I guess I could put in the dimensions.

OAL: 13.25"
Blade: 7.75"
Height: 1.5"
Width: 0.175"

It looks great. I enjoyed following along. I don't think people realize how much work there is in a larger knife until you do one. Its rewarding when done though. Ready to start another one?

Thanks Warren. It was considerably more work than my usual drop point hunters or little kitchen knives.

I will definitely do another one... Just not yet! I think a small hidden tang is on the horizon. Then a slipjoint

Just for information, I find the Mango really comes alive when finished to 2500g. It looks good at 2000g, but the extra effort is worth it.

I guess I should share my progress on the sheath so far. Veg tanned leather, tooled and hand stitched, with a Sam Brown stud. The main body of the sheath is done, I'll be working on the frog today.

Looks awesome Shane . The copper pin is a nice touch and it's always great to follow along with WIPS. They're one of my favorite types of threads on here.

Nice Job........your sheath work is quite good as well.
