Boyfriend's birthday coming up - looking for a heavy duty but small folder

What about the weight of the 0350? I just realized it weighs almost twice as much as the Griptilian and Endura. Is 6 oz a generally acceptable weight for something you carry around in your pocket every day?

You don't notice it in Jeans. I prefer my folders to be from 4-8 oz. It's a much more capable knife for anything you want to dish out at it than a thin bladed knife. No plastic on the knife too.

If this fella isn't really a knife-guy anyway, I'd say just get him an Ontario RAT-1 in the satin finish. Solid knife, easy to maintain/sharpen and very affordable. Take him out for dinner with the money you save...

Good luck :)

Hmm, the only 6 oz thing I could find was a cup of greek yogurt, haha. On the one hand it doesn't seem to weigh that much, but on the other throw in all the other stuff guys tend to carry around in their pockets and now I'm starting to have doubts again.
(Completely off topic, but I spent a couple of years living in a country where the social norm was for men to carry around this incredibly ridiculous leather man purse about the size of a large wallet, and that is where they kept all the stuff Americans put in their pockets. You carried it by the briefcase-like handle on top and there was also a little wrist strap for extra security.)

Thanks!
But he hasn't had a real birthday in years - it was always either training or deployment or something else. So this year I want everything to be special. I know that he'd be perfectly happy with one of those, but I'd rather get him something he would never buy himself. And dinner, good wine and a second present are all planned and separately budgeted, so it's not an either/or situation.

At 6'2" and 170 pounds, I don't think I quite qualify as a giant.;)
We're talking less than a half a pound...if you aren't a dwarf hamster it shouldn't be too much weight.:D

I'm somewhere inbetween the hamster and you!

My 350 is way too big for pocket EDCing in dress slacks in an office.

Check out the brand new Buck Vantage Force Avid -- it's less than 5 oz with a 3.25 inch Sandvik blade -- and one heckuva a tough folder at $60 or so street price.

Good point, it depends on the clothing often.
Is it too big as in too wide?
My Superhawk is that way, too wide for some pockets (well, too wide in that it makes getting the wallet past it an exercise in contortion:D).

A G-10 handled Spyderco Endura might work too.
Light, slim, and tough enough.
Looks nice too.:)

Very kind and thoughtful of you to research this and pick out a gift. Given your criteria, I recommend Benchmade's Griptilian. Solid knife, good steel, terrific lock (which is awesome for easy opening and closing), and relatively light. I have a number of folders and those over 4.5 oz get left behind when it is time for shorts. I don't notice the extra weight as much with jeans but it is distracting with shorts.

gayle bradley is a great knife. I carry mine more than the custom and high end productions I have. GREAT knife

If u can get deal on a benchmade mpr, he will love it! Superheavy duty and great for small to medium hands, it has green g10, which is perfectly textured.

The mini-griptilian was my "gateway knife" all those years ago. Lightweight and looked cool. No matter which knife you choose, I would highly recommend a Spyderco Sharpmaker to go with it. It's simple to use and does a good job. The best knife is a sharp knife!

Welcome to BF!

If you're willing to spend $150, my vote goes for a para and a sharpmaker. The lock back, in my opinion, might suffer from getting dirty, but then any knife will.

The sharpmaker is a nice easy way to maintain a good edge, and as long as you don't get a sprint run of the para in a more exotic steel, you won't need diamond rods I don't think

Exellent Idea Actually!

For me, 6 oz and up is perfectly acceptable weight for a knife. I have carried around a 6 1/2 oz Cyclone for a couple years now and I've never known the weight to be a nuisance.
