Brad Duncan???????

Blade tang grind is uneven and trails off like a crack in glass. Pivot hole (opposite screw side) is a shaky circle and not fully "round". When i removed the carbon fiber scales the lockbar bows past the frame. This is why its so tight. Once the slabs are on and applying pressure to the bar where it would bend out past the frame with slabs off, it forces the bar up against the tang way more than needed.
Minor offset to the blade grind but I'll try not to be too anal. I wouldn't have cared paying more for this knife than my seb that is flawless if the lockbar was functioning normally. Problem is the ball detent is so close to the edge of the lock bar you couldn't take a hair off if you wanted to.

Not a big surprise, Brad's knives are "in stock" everywhere you look. Not many people are buying them.

Wow... This is all news to me. I had one of his folder for a year, sold it 3 years ago. It didn't fit my collection, but it was really, really, really nice. He had a great eye for cool design that were practical. :(

I would love to hear their side!!!! Like some have said, life throw's us curve balls. Completely understood! But to be left guessing just plain sucks. As for Tim,,, I own a couple of his works. Spoken to him on several occaisions. Him I'll give a nother shot!! Maybe he just got caught up in the extasy that is knife selling......

I for one am getting really tired of makers/dealers pulling this crap. I understand completely if you cannot make deadlines or fulfull orders for whatever reason, life is unexpected sometimes but cmon already. Just communicate and let us know if you want to do business or not. If not then stop taking money and promising orders. I dont see any excuse for this whatsoever. It all sounds to me like poor life management skills and unfortunately we all end up paying for it when it could have been avoided if people wouldn't try for the ez way out like hide 'n seek.

I have to agree with GFarrell on this. I have yet to purchase any customs (saving up money for a really good one) but I am doing serious research on it, and it seems that there are a good number of makers who are known for being great to do business with, like Mr. Mayo said. But, just hearing the Allan Blade / Steve Corkum stories just makes my skin crawl ($4000???? :thumbdn: ) and they're always the same, "I gave them the benefit of the doubt and they said they'd get it to me soon, then they stopped returning my calls and e-mails and said their computer broke down, blah blah blah." I can think of very few other small businesses or customized ---- makers that could get away with this sort of behavior, and more leniency means more buyers that get shortchanged, which means a worse rep for the good knifemakers out there with integrity. It's just a crying shame. Honestly, it's not that hard to return a phone call.

You're doing the right stuff. if you keep this going and not prepay, you won't get burnt.

You did not mention if you paid Tim Britton any money. Did you?

I don't think that really makes any difference. If a maker tells you your knife/hatchet is done and can be picked up at a coming knife show, it is wrong, in my opinion, to sell it to someone else.

I don' t think it makes a difference either. Slow down a bit and don' t jump in so quick. I addressed the question to tautog63. Not to you, Keith Montgomery.

Not to hijack this, but just so everyone knows there are real "good guy" knifemakers as well -

I was supposed to make it to the recent NY show, and I was going to pick up a Contender from RJ Martin at the show - new grind, cool Moonglow scales. No deposit asked for. Anyway, due to airport delays I never made it to the show.

Emailed RJ to apologize - he had my knife at the show, lots of folks asked about it and wanted to buy it - he didn't sell it, but kept it for me! He Fedexed it me after telling me to send him a check "if I liked it" !

Needless to say, it arrived today and it is awesome (of course) - but even more, the fact that he saved it for me, Fedexed it to me (prior to being paid anything) right after the show and kept on top of things says alot:thumbup:

Makers like this more than outweigh the jerks fortunately!

I could have spent that money on Rent! Or a kidney! Yeah they are expensive,,,and i have enough trouble tryin to squeez overtime out of my bosses tight butt for the year so i can get to the shows w a little mad money. I'll keep the faith though. Thanks for the pic of Dickey,,,,,Look foward to maybe getting two more hawks from him! If this one is one of his i wouldn't want it to be lonely. Later

I think everyone knows R.J. is one of the good guys, why don't you make a new thread and tell the same story and I for one don't like seeing R.J. Martin's name mentioned in a thread about a second rate knifemaker.

Thanks for sharing that.

Nakano2..... No i didnt pay Tim. Thankfully two seperate senarios. That story about the guy... I think it was a Rep. from R.J. Martin who fedexed the knife without being paid. OUTSTANDING INTEGRITY! Sir i for one salute you! Now is there a good knife show anywhere within a hundred miles or so from N.Y. Big A ring a bell?????? I need a knife fix. LOL

From hindsight, luckily you did not pay full in advance. According to the members list of the Knifemakers Guild www.knifemakersguild.com Tim Britton is a member. If the situation you have described is accurate (and I' m not saying it isn' t) then the conduct of said maker could have been bought to the attention of at least 2 board members of the Guild who were right at the very same show- Frank Centafonte and SR Johnson. If you had paid full in advance, then said makers actions may have qualified for legal action. It would not seem likely that this would have been ignored by the board members who were present at that show. The impact would have been greater if the maker in question was approached by you accompanied by either or both board members. But not likely, as they too have to maintain professionalism. :) This was the basis for my original question. And I hope it is helpful.

Keith Montgomery, I have not been made upset by you. Sometimes you just have to slow things down a bit and let things play out before hurrying your next post.

Goblin,

RJ is obviously a great guy, and I have in fact posted a thread about this on another forum. I posted what I did here for 2 reasons:
1) I've noticed that "bad" threads get many more views than "good ones often, and I wanted folks to know about a good guy!
2) Several of the complaints here (took money, no knife or "sold my knife at a show") are exactly the opposite of what makers like RJ do, so I figured that was relevant.

I can see your point of view, though :)

I wish my dig camera was working, so I could post a pic of my new knife - THAT would be worth a new thread!

Thanks Joss ... I always enjoy your comments on the customs forums and often find them very educational; it's good to see that I'm on the right track.

Tautog, are you just planning to write off your payment to Brad Duncan? I think there was another post on the GB&U that said that if you do, you can recoup at least some of your loss as tax break from bad debt. Have you continued trying to communicate with him? What's the story?

his knives suffer major, major quality problems. I wouldn't take one if it was free.

Exactly. I bought one of his knives and had to had it adjusted by local knifemaker. Sold it shortly after that. No more BD knives.
