Brad Southard Flipper Arrived!! Lots of Photos/Video

I have no hard evidence to back it up but I believe I had heard spyderco would be running their cts-204p slightly harder than their m390 which is at around 60-61. By that logic, the Southard should be around 62-63.

Wow! If that's true, then this thing could out perform S90V in edge retention.

Mine just shipped earlier today from CS! Excited. I've loved your stuff for awhile. Been waiting along time Brad. Now we can all afford something close to your custom version. I think even though this is a production it is closer to a mid-tech. Thanks Sal for bringing this to us. Best yet! I think Brad and Sal should both chime in about Taichung and the craftsmanship. The fit and finish they give Spyderco's. Some information to the misinformed would be appreciated. US only is not the only way. Nor buying Taichung is being anti American. Better yet they help, I believe, keep or create jobs. Healthy partnership. Have you been to the Taichung factory Brad? Thanks!

How close in quality (lockup, action, etc.) does this flipper come to the XM-18?

I used to have an XM-18 3.5" and it was an excellent knife. I received my southard flipper today and I personally think the build quality is equal to the XM-18. The southard flips faster and easier than the Hinderer, fit and finish on both is impeccable. CTS-204P is a top of the line steel. The southard is every bit the hinderers equal in my opinion.

I recieved the email from cs also ! I never been so excited to recieve a knife sprints included

Why did you have to say such a thing? :(

Man oh man you guys are making me even more excited to get mine. Why did it have to ship on a Friday?!?!

Any tests out there to back this up? I am excited to try out the Spyderco 204p. Paging Sal. My Christmas wish is for my 204P mule.

204p is carpenter's version of bohler's m390. It's the exact same alloy. So basically 204p is American m390. Performance should be spectacular

Right, got that. Thanks for the marketing hype. It's not really real world though. I look at that like saying Pepsi is basically Coke. They are made pretty much the same.

I have had two microtechs with this steel for the past 5-6 months. Although I've done no "scientific" testing, I've used the microtechs extensively and it's a top of the line steel in my opinion. It is every bit as good as my M390 blades as far as I can tell. The only knife steel I've tried that is obviously superior is K390 in my Phil wilson customs.

Glad these are going out. It's a great knife. I'm counting the days until Christmas until I can actually put the knife through its paces.

Sorry man, that's the best I can tell you. I own blades in m390 and they are excellent performance wise. 204p is not overly common in the production knife world at this point, and as far as I know, aside from a few microtech runs, the Southard will be the first mass production blade using the steel. Basically, there are not a lot of first hand opinions to be had.

With that said, it's really nothing like Pepsi vs Coke. M390 and cts-204p share the exact same formula, assuming identical heat treat, performance should be identical. Assuming 204p is run slightly harder, 204p should come out ahead of m390 which is saying a lot. 204p wouldn't be like Pepsi vs Coke, it would be like Coke made at 2 different factories but one jacks up the caffeine a bit. Same exact recipe, with a little extra zip.

I'm having a hard time locating the Southard in stock at a reputable dealer. If anyone has a lead, please send it my way. :)

Good luck with that one... a far as I'm aware there are none. It's a tremendously popular release and dealers are in the process of filling preorders. I imagine they'll be more readily available in a month or two.
