It seems to occur with clothes, cars and music. Does it exist with knife knuts? Do Old Timers buy Old Timers?

Your thoughts please...

Cheers,
Gord

I'm quite young and the only kind of knives that i'm not too interested are slipjoints. (I'm not dissing the fans, but I just don't see me carrying one of them)
I have CRKTs (don't have much money right now) and drooling for some BMs and maybe some Spydercos.

I don't know if it has anything to do with age or not. I am certainly not one of the younger members of this forum. My favorite manufacturers are in no particular order; Queen, Camillus, Buck, Spyderco and William Henry.

well I'm in my twenties...I can't speak for anyone else..but my prefered carries are mainly BM's, Emersons and Spydercos..I have some wooden handled traditional type folders but those are just for my collection...not for carry..I guess they might do just as good a job as my others but the appeal isn't there for me...

I don't find slipjoints exciting in the least. Im 19 and money is an issue for me(poor college student) so I am a big fan of CRKT right now, eyeing spyderco with lust in my eyes and maybe eventually a BM when I get a job:)

I'm 42, not that it matters much in choosing a knife I'll buy anything so long as it's quality made, and I like it.
Doesn't matter old or new.:D

I'm 29. I own mostly Tactical stuff. Only because I'm poor. I'm dreaming of a Gold Quartz Price style knife from Steve Rapp. Is that a traditional style? All the stuff I like that isn't tactical is way out of my price range. :(

I'm 24 since a few days ago, and am only interested in tactical knives. I see no point for anything else, for me personally.
I'm not interested in anything overly "pretty" like with pearl handles or stag or somehting like that.
If I wanted something pretty to look at I'd get a mirror and stair at my white a$$ all day.:D

My favourite brands/makers being Mad Dogs, Striders and Busse's.

But I can definetely understand people loving other types of knives. Different strokes for dif. folks.

Well,
I am serving the last few months of my twenties. Big 30 coming up, but that means I am young. I used to be a tac guy too. I have been into knives in a BIG way for a LONG time. I have owned every major popular brand out now. (production) I have chased steel, locks, blade style, brand. In the end, I have come full circle back to slipjoint folders. They are the only place I can find enough variety to keep me happy. How many pocket clip one handed patterns (practical) can be done? Not that many. Slipjoints are a whole new thing with TONS of options. Especially now with the new Queens in D2, and other great brands. I also like to buy American. Many long time American slipjoint makers. Nothing against tacticals, but I have been there and done it. I don't know when the market will shift....soon, I think.
For myself...... tactical= tired.

I'm in my mid 30's. I think my knife preferences are more application geared. I live in a small town in a rural county, enjoy the outdoors, and have a technical job, so my preferences lean toward hunting knives, slipjoints, and lockbacks. Price is important, too, as I have a family to feed. Tacticals seem too clunky for most of what I do, but there are still some nice ones out there, like Benchmade.
As for brands, I like Buck, Schrade, Camillus, Ontario, Victorinox the best. Gerber and Kershaw have some great knives, too. Case are nice, but mostly for looking at.

I guess as you age your income would increase and more options would be available. So cash is a big factor. I have a handful of Benchmades and recently picked up a Sebbie. I'm 38.
I was thinking if a particular style or flavor attracted a certain age group. Example, Spyderco has some really unique and sassy designs perhaps they draw a younger crowd?

Lmao....oops now I can't look at mine.

I recently turned 18 and my preference is for Spyderco, they produce some of the most innovative stuff on the market at reasonable prices, and the performance of their knives leaves very little to be desired. I prefer 'tactical' knives in general because i find them much easier to use.

When I was young bigger was better. As a teen, I bought ridiculuous stillettos that really had no practical use. I also loved big folding hunters. When I first became aware of modern one handers, I first bought a Delica because I knew it was legal sized, but I still lusted after the Endura and Police and later AFCK.

Now that I'm into customs and high-end production knives, I lean most heavily towards gents style knives because those are the knives that I can actually carry and use on a daily basis. I still have some larger tacticals like a medium Kit Carson Model 4 and two larger J.W. Smith models and I carry them primarily off work, but gents knives between 2-3" just make the most sense plus I can do virtually anything I need with them.

Quality.., (i.e., fit and finish.., etc)..., is basically what I look for.., but I admit being older I'm not so much into the "hype" of so many "Tactical Knives" currently produced.

A well-trained practitioner of edged weapons is far more formidable with an inexpensive skinner than a novice with a CQC-6. :)

I am 18, and really like tactical knives. I am also getting into customs, I am currently waiting on my first TNT. In production knives my favorites are currently Microtech and Al Mar. In the Semi-Production/Small shop, I like the Sebenza which I got a few months ago. I think it is a very practical design, and carried out perfectly. Mostly what I am looking for is quality, so any maker/producer offering a quality product with good materials I am interested in.

there are few knives i dont like, I want queen D2 slipjoints, i want a Custom buck 110, i want a MT Socom D/A, a Hossom H/K, Blackwood Melee, Lightfoot suppressor, a pirela, Busse S/J & Mr Mojo.

Basically i like them all, BUT, what i want and what i buy are different things, i am 20 and i buy Benchmades and Microtechs.

At 56 I suppose I've grown up ( and older) with the traditional knives
I've known so long. While most of the younger folk's will prefer the
one hand wonders for the gee whiz toy factor I think in time they too
will come to appreciate the traditionals as much as I do. There comes
a point in a persons life where simple is really better and much prefered
in all things you own.

I'm 45 and I carry a Randall Model 10-3" on my belt, an Elishewitz Chisel grind tanto blade liner lock cliped to my pocket and a Case 8383 Whittler in my pocket.

Twenty years old and enjoy mainly tactical knives. My favorite brand is probably BM. I really like Emerson's designs, but am in the middle of sorting out a problem with my first and only right now, so I will withhold judgement, besides saying they have some awesome designs. I have a few spydercos that are all great knives at various price points.

I'm 46 (Oww, that hurt) and I've always liked bowies and slipjoints.
Came here and discovered small ute FB's and the quintessential Loveless Dropped Hunter.
Have FB's from Denning, Dozier, Evans (Bruce) R.O.Easler & Livesay.
Factory stuff includes Buck, Bulldog, Camillus, Cold Steel & Schrade.
What I don't like are painted blades, even though I have a few. I can't decide whether to polish or sell them ;)
Still trying to figure out exactly what a 'tactical' knife is...
I remain,
