Brand preference by age group?

I'm 23 and my preference is for knives with a blade and a handle.

I own slip joints, large tac folders, large tac fixed blade, small neck knives, wood handled hunters, wood handled bowie's, etc...
I got a small forged practical carry fixed blade on order with Terry Primos. I aslo have folders (3.5" or bigger blade) on order with Kit Carson, Mike Obenauf and Alan Folts. The reason my folders all tend to be huge is due to the fact I am a very large individual. Small-medium sized handles don't fit well in my hand. (same reason I didn't buy a Glock 19) So basicly, I like knives with larger handles. Doesn't really matter what it is. I like forged hunters, japanese influenced tacticals, large folders, bowies, etc... My preference is also for non-damascus pieces. I just love the simplistic beauty of plain stainless or high carbon non-stainless steels.

I'm 39 years old. My preferred brands for EDC are Chris Reeve and Victorinox. For hunting, the Schrade Sharpfinger.

I'll join Tightwad as another representative of the over-50 crowd. For me, BM really fills the quality/value bill. Can't seem to resist that Lepidoptera.

I think lifestyle has more to do with it than age.
I'm 30. Surely someone else who's 30, has a different job, different hobbies, and different habits will have different taste in knives, as well.
I don't really shop by brand names, anyway. I buy a knife for a specific purpose, not a name stamped on the blade. dat's ignorant!
Right now I have 18 knives. 8 different brands, and 3 different custom makers...

I turn twenty-nine on May 1. I have been through a lot of 'phases' in knife ownership already, and probably will continue to... I don't care about the style of knife, slip-joint, lock back, fixed, whatever... I have seen examples of each that I would love to own. I am keeping in mind that I already have WAY more knives than I need... now I am trying to add some custom knives to my bunch.

I am now more concerned with the attention and fit/finish of the knife than with the style. I plan on eventually giving my knives to my son or daughter (don't have either YET)... and I have found that I enjoy the interaction and waiting (anticipating) of a knife coming from a good custom maker. It makes it much more special to me than buying one from a store or website.

So... If it looks good, feels good, and cuts well, I will consider it... There are vast differences in the price of any style of knife, depending on the origin, materials, time to produce.... etc...

i'm 3 weeks from 18, have 3 benchmades, a buck, and i'm waiting on my first custom from bud neely right now so i'm quite happy bout that. If i had more money then i would buy some of the gents knifes but right now because of the lack of funds i buy the best quality knives i can at the time.

all during my childhood thru my teens and 30's, ya could get nothing BUT a slipjoint, i remember when the buck 110(yes i know a lockback) came out, and then the 'experts' said the best folder for self defense was a gerber FS11, was looking at my old FS saturday PM, gee, its not a one hander for sure lol, and not nearly as handy as todays stuff, even the cheapies like CRKT, etc, no pocket clip, thumbstud, HEAVY, unhandy, a cool old knife i guess, but the new stuff is clearly superior, for my needs anyway

before that ya only had slipjoints or fixed blades (well that were common anyway) so ive 'been there/done' that w/slip joints, the new stuff, again, is just more convenient imho, the blade locks, etc

when i was looking at my FS11, i checked out the old sales rec'pt, bout it in '79, damn thing was $55, a lot of $$ in those days.......i guess i got my $$ out of it though, carried it all the time from '79 to about '89 or so when i got my first spydie, and man it looks it, wood scale on 1 side broken half off, lotsa wear on the blade, etc, still cuts great though, also have a drop point FS11, carried very little, got it in '84 or so, still have the leather belt sheath, wonder if its worth anything......

but anyway, i like the new stuff myself,

Bud's a great guy to deal with he lives just a town or two away from me, which is one of the reasons why I bought one of his early Aikuchis a long time ago, and even though the MCS system sheath has taken massive abuse and has a slight crack in it, and the knife has been slightly modified by me to make blade edge orientation easier for me, it's still my #1 defensive carry blade. LOL with the knife and let me know what you think.

PS By the way, it's Bud Nealy

40s, Bowies for fun, utilities/multitools for work, Victorinox favorite brand.

25yo, "tactical" folders and gent's pocketknives.

Less style and more durability -- I love my BM690, but it scuffs too easily. Rather have G10 or Micarta.

I started with the "black scum killer knives" -- i.e. Emerson, Masters of Defense, CRKT M16, tantos, and I'm slowly gravitating towards color and refinement, i.e. Chris Reeve, William Henry, drop/leaf points.

Admittedly right now I'm carrying a black on black BM 710. My small concessions to colour is a green-handled satin Commander and ivory micarta custom Marlowe on order.

Look ma, no more black!

;)

I'm 41. I have been a fan of SAKs since childhood and of multi-tools since the first Leatherman hit the market, but I have only become interested in single-blade knives within the last few years.

I favor "tacticals" because they are simple and practical. One handed use is convenient, even if it isn't a survival issue. :)

My favorite knife companies are Spyderco and Victorinox, although my favorite production knife is currently the Camillus CUDA Maxx.

My favorite folder is a custom Darrel Ralph Mini-Maxx with a 4" spearpoint recurve blade in Talonite and an anodized titanium frame.

My favorite fixed blade is a custom Bob Dozier Texas #6 with a 5-1/2" blade in D-2 and dark green G-10 scales.

I'm not sure what conclusions can be drawn from all this, but I suspect that preferences in knives have more to do with a) lifestyle, b) wealth, and c) how long you've been a knifenut, than they do with actual age. Of course, age tends to affect all of those things to some extent.

At 64 I would say that brands doesn't have as much influemce as the type of steel, edge holding, and quality does.

I'm 21, and I like anything cool. (How's THAT for a broad statement? ;)) I have a BM42s bali, Buckmaster 184 (the COOLEST!) a Cold Steel Recon Tanto (on the way) and some other small ones. Its small, but growing. :)

I like tactical blades, balis, and autos. Mostly stuff that is illegal in most parts of the country, and stuff that scares the @#$% out of most people. :D

To give you an idea, I reeeeeally like the Strider Seal 2001, and I want an Extrema Ratio Harpoon F. Also on the wish list is a MT UT DE Auto. So many knives I want, so little money to spend....*sigh* :(

I do NOT like overly "pretty" stuff; pearl handles, etc. Stuff that would not hold up hiking or in a survival situation. I like only top-quality blades, and ones that I could rely on to save my life, if need be.

I am going to come down on the slip joint/traditional fixed blade side of this fence.

Agree with an earlier post where a fellow forumite discussed the almost endless possiblities re slip joints. And I hope Queen's foray into D2 is only the beginning of production slip joints in the less traditional steels.

Am also a sucker for fixed blade custom hunters by obscure knifemakers...I have some that are the equal of some of the most expensive customs.

I am 54...I also own several BM's and Spydies which I feel are excellent quality knives.

All that said, my favorite and the one I would keep if I could only have one, is my CG Satin Jack :)

I'm 48 and mainly into slipjoints & lockbacks: Camillus,
Case, Shrade and Bulldog. I've got some of the
modern tacticals but a lot of that is my wanting
to actually have something in my hand to see how it
feels & works. I usually carry a one hander and a slipjoint.
I love the variety of knife designs and many times will
buy an inexpensive example just to have one to finger.
I am working up to buying a French Languiol and a Spanish
Navaja. Knives that are out of the ordinary catch my eye.
My wife says that when I retire I will have to open a
museum to display all the various things I've collected.

Well it just so happened that my knife came the same day that i bought my car(95 prelude) so needless to say that was a good day. Bud nealy does make a great knife(sorry for my sp error, spelling is not my subject in school). Its good to have the extra one just in case, although i doubt i will ever need it.

I'm 38 and have been through several phases. I'm past the tatical phase and my EDCs are mainly CR large and small Sebenzas. In the last year I have been moving to larger knives though. Where I used to carry my small Sebenza I'm favoring the large.

I am 39 and my tastes in knives consists primarily of tac/utility folders (BM, MT, Sebenzas, Customs), small fixed blades of a more traditional nature (Marble's, Denning, Primos) and Custom Fighters and forged Bowies. Regardless of the knife type, I try to keep my choices quite tame in nature. No wild grinds, serrations, bright colors, or bad ass attitude needed to impress anyone. Just the grown up side of me coming out and leaving the kid behind :(

I'm in high school right now and my preference isn't so much for brand as it is for type. I like high end hard-use production folders for EDC and balisongs to play with. I like Benchmade, Emerson, Microtech, and Spyderco. Recently I've become interested in military-style fixed blades and I want to pick up a Randall or maybe one of Newt Livesay's designs.

I will be 39 on May 6th and I like all kinds of knives. I own knives made by:
Benchmade
Victorinox
Spyderco
Kershaw
Camillus
Schrade
Cold Steel
SOG
Case
Gerber
Wenger
Emerson
CRKT
Colonial (back in the '70s)
Leatherman

That's all I can think of for now. I tend to go in cycles; I will go ape over the product line of a certain maker, then get more interested in another, then eventually cycle back again. Probably my overall favorite companies are Benchmade, Victorinox, and Spyderco. Though I have lately been on an Emerson kick. When I'm out I always have something made by Benchmade, Victorinox, Spyderco, and Leatherman on me at the same time, in some capacity.

Probably the only knives I avoid (besides poor quality knives) are the fancy knives with delicate parts, such as mother of pearl scales, horn, stag, etc. I do have some Case bone handled knives I like and used to carry a lot, but worry what if I happen to drop it and crack the beautiful handle.
