Brand preference by age group?

I'm 25 and mostly a Benchmade man. Though I own and like blades from Spyderco, REKAT, MT, Camillus, and SOG. I'm mostly interested in knives for utility and self defense, and due to my location and lifestyle that pretty much leaves me with one hand folders.

Don't think I've ever owned a slipjoint.

And I dream of customs in stag and damascus, hidden release DA's, OTF's, and a straight handled Battle Mistress.

I just turned 36.

I have SOG, BM, MT, a Busse Apprentice, Buck, Victorinox, Fallkniven, CRKT

The knives I find on me everyday tend to be the 2.5-3" folders. They are sheeple friendly, and do 95% of what I need. Lately the most frequent pocket resident has been my CRKT S-2 (recently my UDT:D )

I like (and prefer to use) 1 handed knives, but also like the traditional lockbacks.

I'd like to get some customs, Sebenza or an Umfaan, but have trouble with the co$t factors...

man, i feel like such and ammature... sigh, i'm only 18 but i've expensive taste. my first knife was a CRKT but i wasn't too happy with the steel. now i've got a BM and a Spydie along with my lovely lovely Kabar... sigh... i'm starting to eye the William Henry though i know i can't afford that. but i think my taste would be more expensive compared to other 18 year olds

I'm turning 20 this year.
I'm mostly into high quality balisongs.
But I do like tactical folders as well.
I don't understand the ppl who like slipjoints, makes no sense to me.

aXed, keep it up there bud... sounds like you have pretty good taste in knives to me... keep in mind that the COST doesn't matter, the quality, attention to detail and care in making are more important (at least I think so... ) I have a bunch of Spyderco's now... and Like them a lot... I plan on continuing to trade for or buy more... I just plain like 'em, yet the most expensive Spydie I own is less than a third of the cost of my next "better' knife. I own a Strider GB, which I LOVE and have a Mayo TNT on order (right now I think that will be the pinnacle of my collection, (but also have an Ed Fowler blade in the works.... ) My point is... COST don't mean crap... QUALITY means everything. Sometimes the quality is worth the cost... Trust me, I never thought I'd own a $550 blade, let alone what some of the custom 'art knives' cost:eek: ! But I think that REALLY GOOD QUALITY blades are worth it... I am sure that I will have my Strider, Mayo, and Fowler for a GOOD LONG TIME!

Dan... I happen to be one of those fellas who enjoy slipjoints:) I still remember the first three bladed whitller my Dad bought me when I was but a young whelp. There will always be a part of my soul that loves that style... I know a lot of people don't particularly care for them, but I guess I am an 'old fashioned kinda 29 year old' in some ways... :) ;)

I turned 31 this year. Main interest/obssesion in slipjoints (dave know what you mean about being old fashioned!) for one hander/tacticals I think Benchmades are hard to beat for value for money. Got my 720 on me today. Having said that I don't own a Spydie (other than Spydercard) or Mirctotech (have to fix that!)
Though with a new baby and a new house my knife spending has gone waaaayy down and probably will for the next couple of years so purchases are now carefully considered.
One day I will get a TNT, one day, yes, ohhh yesss!

I'm 56, but very active and seem to run with a younger crowd. Love the Queen/S&M s/j's, and MT tacticals. Also partial to the Spydie collaborations, and a couple of the pre-axis BM's. Allways carry a LM tool. Am currently taking medication to ward off the custom "bug". Sorry, Mayo...:p

I'm an older guy (56) and these three things are what matters to me when I look for a new knife. What job do I expect it to do? What is the standard of quality in materials, fit, and finish? and is it executed tastefully? As we used to say in the Govt, cost is an independant variable. I'll pay what it takes...

Right now I have a SAK in my business suit pocket, a Spyderco Military in my jeans for general ranch use, a Leatherman in my car, and an ancient LL Bean bird and trout knife in my hunting kit. All these are very utilitarian and taste wasn't a big facto. I'm still looking for a very dressy (tasteful) Gents knife for special carry (when we go to the symphony? LoL!). Maybe something out of the A.G. Russell catalog?

I'm now 32 and I still like the "tactical" style. Of course, as a young kid I had a bunch of fixed/folders for hunting and fishing (Case, etc). I always collected Gerber products as they were "tactical" before that became the buzzword. I always wanted a Terzuola ATCF since they first came out but couldn't afford one. Went through what I call my "possessed" stage where I bought and sold almost every factory folder made. Tried the Sebenza too. I now own and carry only a Crawford Point Guard. Very nice, high quality, solid lock-up, very light, and size-wise is in-between Gent's and full-size tactical. I have a few Swiss Army knives and a Leatherman. My plan right now is to buy another Crawford, the Shark. That's all I'm really interested in. I think my tastes changed with age to quality, not quantity. I still like my knife to do most things well, so I don't buy anything just for looks (no pearl-handled knives, etc.) or collector value. No single-pupose knives for me. I hate serrations. I hate gimmicks (LAWKS anyone? :barf: ). I will probably replace my Large Sebenza eventually because it is just a really nice knife. Also, want a Crawford Leopard Cub for "office wear". I tried to make all those factory folders fit my expectations, but they never did. I don't miss a single one of them. It's a learning process. Keep It Simple Stupid, as they told me! Thanks, Leo G.

I'm 31 and have a preference for tactical folders and fixed blades. I am a hardcore Spydie Knut, although lately, I've also been looking into some of the Case pocketknives.

One of my peeves is that whatever knife I buy, I USE. I don't tend to spend money on something that will just look pretty.

I am 25 and my love for knives goes back to being a little girl. I detest tacticals, chrome fly open pockets, serrated blades what is pratical about these designs? almost impossible to sharpen and useless for everyday life. (no offense meant) plastic or rubber handles I don't care for at all. I am fascinated with the artistry carefully put into a blade. I appreciate "pretty ones" only when quality and skill are superb. My preferences are for fixed blades drop point being my favorite blade style. I like unusual or rare old utilities I have a horseman's knife from 1884 made by g.wostenholm vet's spaying knife. I like daggers, but seems very hard to find quality daggers. So my collection has 4 customs 3 which are old and makers are unknown. Remington RH31, buck vanguard wood handle, old buck #102 etc. If its not old I don't want it (usually) I don't want a Randall only becuase everyone does and I rather have an old unknown than knives that are collected and wanted by everyone

I'm just about to hit the double nickel (next month). I grew up with slipjoints, but found one-handers about 3 years ago. Now, I always carry a one-hander (BM705 is most common). A clipped one-hander is just so handy that going back to a slipjoint dropped into my pocket seems silly. I do have to do something about making my EDC more esthetic, though. The only thing I miss about slipjoints is nicer handles. I keep threatening to spend some hours changing the handles of my 705 to Cocobolo or Desert Ironwood. I just never seem to have those hours to spend doing it. :( Sometime, I will, though and then I'll have the best of both worlds -- a clipped one-hand knife that really looks like something.:D

I would definitely say there is a difference is age groups and the knives we buy. The first factor is probably money...i am 18 and my funds are definitely limited...i have and love my microtech Exodus, and that is probably the most expensive knife i will ever own. I also love CRKTs and Emersons. My favorite is really microtechs though. I also really appreciate Chris Reeve knives, but i do not have enough money at the moment to purchase a Sebenza. I am more interested in form than function (i wont buy one without the other) because i do more looking at my knives then using them. Okay, so i guess that is my opinion on the matter. PEACE

I'm 46 although I never really got past 14 mentally.

Tactical/Utility: Busse, Fällkniven, MoD (Mk V), Aitor (Jungle King), Puma. I have a Bulgarian "Arsenal" hollow-handled knife with an 8" blade. I don't know if they make any other styles. I'm thinking about ordering a TOPS Anaconda. I haven't seen an Extrema Ratio knife yet, but I would consider getting one if I could examine it first. Bundeswehr utility knife (Kissing Crane/Klaas from what I've been told).

Kitchen: Wüsthof. A butcher knife my aunt has had for about 70 years, maybe it's an LF&C.

Bayonets: US 1905 manufactured at Springfield Armory, South American made by Weyersberg-Kirschbaum.

Other: All of the US companies that made knuckle knives during 1917-1918. The German companies that made the better quality Nahkampfmessern, e.g. Eickhorn, Demag, Hammesfahr, ERN.

I'm 24 and will be turning the horrible 25 way too soon for my tastes. Back in college when I found BFC my love was with Benchmade, and nothing but Benchmade. To be honest I'll always have a love for their knives deep down. Benchmade's styles are what inspired me and fueled my interest/passion for knives.

My tastes are very simple. I like tactical folders and fixed blades with an extension to serious survival knives. If it's pretty and classified as a gentlemen's or artistic folder the dealer can keep it :) There are some I think are beautiful but I've had no desire to ever own one. Natural handle material? lol, not in my lifetime!

Trying to expand my knowledge of custom makers as much as possible while staying in the tactical arena.

p.s. - My very first knife ever was a slipjoint when I was seven years old. Had my first cut with it. While a slipjoint took my knife virginity away I don't care to ever own another one :)

I'm 48 and I'm fascinated by Benchmades - my favorite being the 705 in all of its forms. And G-10 is a great handle material in my opionion, just wish it came in more colors.

That said, I do like many of the smaller slipjoints in bone (and the occasional stag). A well done Case is nice but the walk and talk seem to be slipping.

I'm 17, and I like Benchmade, Microtech, Opinel, and Victorinox. I have found myself carrying the Buck Mini-Strider a lot recently, though.

Well I'm still a young 37 :D. I have been actually down sizing my EDC.
I used to carry a REKAT Carnivore or Benchmade Leopard. Now I'm carrying a Benchmade 940. Not much smaller in length, but smaller everywhere else. I'm tired of black tactical knives and I'm looking for colors and natural materials. I have been looking at some of the smaller Spydercos as well as the Benchmade 705. I'm also thinking about a high end slipjoint. I think age has very little to do with a persons taste in knives. I believe a person's knife tastes will develop as they are exposed to different knives.

Age - 46
I have recently discovered HI khukuris so my cutlery budget is tied up in these. But in (regular) factory blades I really like Spyderco and Camillus. CRKT and Buck knives are among my favorites too.

I am 46 years old, at this stage in my life it's mostly Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, Emerson and Livesay tactical blades. In my teens up till now it was Buck style and Cold Steel style blades mostly for tac style usage for the most part.

I have never been into blades over $200 even when money was not an issue, and I can afford to spend it in those upper priced ones. I would hate to spend $1000+ and have it stolen, lost or taken.
