Brass is back on the menu... GEC #44

I'd never carry the brass, as the knife is too garish for me personally. But I have to admit that it's a pretty cool collector's piece.

I don't know why they had to mess with it and why they dropped rat tail from stag...maybe the thickness.

Really wanted a northfield, rat tail and nickel. I would go Tidioute but then you have the god awful hot dog shield that they are hell bent on using and then nickel with brass pins.

I could just be talking myself into it but that brass with autumn jigged bone is probably gonna pop in reality! At least I hope so! Still wish they wouldn't stamp the rear bolster. :(

I'm loving the aesthetics on the Northfields. I'll be buying all 3. Probably gift one away, stow one, and pocket the other.

I think Brass that has aged and developed a bit of patina looks amazing and certainly doesn't have to look garish at all if you do not want to keep it polished. Just have to pocket the knife and use it for a few days and that patina will develop in short order.

This Zippo of mine was highly polished when I got it brand new, it didn't take any time at all for it to mellow out and darken.

The #44 is one of those patterns that I am immensely curious about and I went ahead and put my name in the hat for one in Ebony and the other in the Brass/Cocobolo.

Is it weird i carry three pocket knives?

Yes, it's weird that you only carry three pocket knives.

I'll probably be skipping the 44. I don't like the brass at all (tarnish, verdigris, smell), and the others just aren't something I'd carry. I do like the look of the stag with the Northfield clip. I'll be content with drooling over other people's pictures of them without having one of my own.

It might be worth noting that verdigris is only an issue if you let your knife remain wet or is exposed to moisture for extended periods of time. Both are already issues for carbon steel so it stands to reason that if you keep your knife dry and clean after use, verdigris shouldn't be much of a problem. At least when paired with wood as a cover material, I've heard that brass doesn't play well with stag or horn.

I never realized that the smell of brass was an issue until so many folks have alluded to it here on the forums. Having spent many years doing Living History activities, I have handled a lot of brass and I can't say that I have ever been put off by the smell, perhaps I am simply accustomed to it.

Yeah, it stinks and gets on your hands. Just forget about any food-prep with all that brass....barf:eek:

- the verdigris can also be a serious issue if the knife is kept in a pouch/sheath where the leather reacts.........easily sorted though with pocket knives, not so easy with a maker who's made a fixed with the wrong sheath leather ..! (as I've had :D)

Brass used for pocket knives is more usual and more successful imho than when same with a fixed blade.......they get rubbed more and end up with either polished faces or patina faces. There are, as we all know, utterly classic folders that have been made with brass for years n years....

I'm tempted to pre-order this one, but can't decide: autumn gold jigged bone or cocobolo rosewood

Holding out hope they will change the ebony hotdog to keyhole. I was really looking forward to this run, but the hot dog shield and brass I'm undecided... might pass.

My favorite gunstock is this Solingen made Winchester from the '70s. It's hard to say just how much the shield contributes to my enjoyment of this knife, as the jigged bone is fabulous, and the blade "bling" is great to my eye as well. But the shield is certainly far preferable to the overused hotdog. GEC's Orleans shield is very close to this one, and would look great!
