Brass is back on the menu... GEC #44

Harry, I knew I liked you . . . I spoke for the same two.
Thanks Jeff , same here my friend . We will be coming down to the St. Louis area sooner or later to see one of our Daughters and then we will take in the big flea market across the river into Illinois . Will contact you then , but don't hold your breath .
I agree with you on your Winchester's shield . GEC could use a little more flair on their shields .
Edited to add : I have never carried either of my 3 Gunstocks ( 2 Case & 1 Tuna Valley ) but I do like the looks of the pattern . My favorite was a Cattaraugus that our friend @Primble obtained a couple of years ago .

Ebony and Cocobolo here. I really have no idea why I ordered the Cocobolo other than I was afraid I might really like the brass when I started seeing the pics and not be able to find one.
I think that was a good call on your part Jamie . I think the brass & cocobolo will go great together .

My favorite gunstock is this Solingen made Winchester from the '70s. It's hard to say just how much the shield contributes to my enjoyment of this knife, as the jigged bone is fabulous, and the blade "bling" is great to my eye as well. But the shield is certainly far preferable to the overused hotdog. GEC's Orleans shield is very close to this one, and would look great!

That's a beautiful knife!

I'm curious to see how the brass looks once the knives are complete. I think it has potential to be pretty cool, but I'm certainly not confident enough to reserve one. :D

GEC is killing me...So many interesting upcoming patterns. I had to pre-order the autumn jigged bone. I wavered back and forth between cocobolo and the autumn jigged. I have a 73 with the autumn jigged bone and it’s one of my favorite jigged patterns, so I went with that.

I see some complain about the stamped Un-X-Ld cap stamp. That is one of the main features about the Northfield that attracts me. (I have always found the stamped cap on the Washington Jack to be aesthetically pleasing). I don’t have any brass bolster traditional knives (except a 110), so that’s also a unique feature that interests me. I think it’s perfectly fitting for a “gunstock” pattern. I have a 43 and 46 on pre-order, but this 44 excites me most for some reason.

Having said that the clean look on the Tidioute models are tempting...Going to have to resist purchasing multiple versions.

The pattern appeals better to me than I thought, especially the Tidioute in ebony (I'm otherwise not a wood cover fan). I may strongly consider to get one. Certainly not one in brass ...

It's hard not to love that goldenrod bone. I kinda wish the Northfield variant was going to be in this color instead of the autumn gold.

That's a good looking knife. What is the closed length, approx? 3" +/-?

I just received a Wichester Black Box '87 gunstock..love it..just wish it was a little bigger..

Just a side bar..not meant to derail.

Y'know, I've been MIA on this board for a LONG time. Boy am I glad I'm back on, or else I would never have seen this. Everything about that Northfield Autumn Gold Jigged Bone does it for me - size, brass bolsters (usually not a big fan, but works perfectly here), shield, etc. I was going to limit my knife purchases to just the forum knife this year, but man, I NEED this.

Love the thread title, Mike!:thumbsup::D:D

But I don't have any experience with the gunstock pattern, and to me, it looks VERY weird. :confused:o_O What's the "functional rationale" for the gunstock pattern? Is it pure aesthetics? Is there an ergonomic advantage? Inquiring minds want to know!

I'm assuming here (and you know what happens when you assume...), that the scooped out portion of the handle is to allow you to access the nail nick on a small secondary pen knife set relatively low into the handle. Of course, the design shown has a fairly large secondary blade, so the scoop (which gives it the look of an old straight-style gun stock) is purely aesthetic in this model. Which I don't mind because I like larger secondary blades.

I'm guessing this run of 44's will be a sizable one, being there are only 2 different cover offerings with rat-tailed brass bolsters.

I don't have OCD and I'm not a neat freak by any means, but all of that flashing is freaking me out. Need to grab a file...

So, if those are only the top bolsters, the math says they're planning for 920 each of the two brass versions. That's a substantially bigger run than I was expecting.
