Breeden Passaround - Tyson Bushcraft - With a Surprise!

I got the Breeden knife and did a little testing on it. I started in the kitchen and had the wife use it to make a salad. She sliced and diced cucumbers and tomatoes at which this knife did a very good job, even at peeling the veggies. Many knives do not excel at peeling.

I then headed out to the shelter belt and Garage to do some wood working. Along with a small Winchester Hatchet I decide to fashion some primitive weapons instead of the usual fuzz sticks and such. I used the hatchet for the rough work and the Breeden for the whittling chores. It was a joy to use and I love the way it fit my hand. I will try to post some picture which is far from my strong suit.

I first cut a walking stick about 5 1/2 feet long and sharpened on end for a spear. I would then fire harden the point for real survival. I then fashioned a fish/frog spear and tied it on with rawhide which I always carry in My kit as it keeps getting tighter as it sets. Lastly I made a hunting/throwing stick about 2 fett long with sharp prongs to maximize damage. These can be surprisingly effective on small to medium size game and can be a wicked self defense tool. In a pich I have used these type tools to sustain life for several weeks at a time. Love this knife. I can see one in my future and thanks to all who gave me a chance to use it.

NO I didn't cut this tree down with the Breeden:D

Cool little projects Jim!

I received the Tyson Bushcraft in the mail yesterday and got a chance to get a preliminary feel for it last night after I got home from work and tonight after work. I will post a more complete review tomorrow as I am off and hopefully will get a hike in with my wife.

First off, The knife is more compact than I had expected; which is a good thing in this case. In my suburban New England world, a knife this size would be the upper limit for EDC carry.
The fact that the edge and handle meet in a subtle apex with no wasted space gives plenty of usable edge for outdoor tasks as well as household chores. I like the thickness of the blade and the subtle taper toward the point which highlights the maker's skill and understanding of his trade. The thickness of the handle along with the contouring work well to compensate the relatively small size of the handle.
The well made, no frills, heavy duty sheath works well for outdoors carry but prints as a larger knife for around town.
I am excited to have the opportunity to try this knife out, and will provide my impressions of this knife in use tomorrow evening.

Hi all, udtjim and marcelo cantu I am so glad to hear you both like the Tyson knife and thank you so much for the kind words on the knife I made. udt jim funny you should mention about the being able to peel with that Tyson knife. I was chatting with Bear the dog last night on the phone and we were talking about a couple of BOS knives I made for him, one being 1/16" thick for the steel and 1/4" rounded orange G-10 for the handles. Reuben was telling me that he dedacated that one for the kitchen chores :D

Thanks again to Brian for the pass around and the ones who signed up for it and have said such nice comments on the Tyson knife.

Hi Folks. I am pleased to share my review of the Tyson Bushcraft knife. I carried and used the Tyson Bushcraft all day today.

Like all typical weekday mornings That I'm off, I'm on breakfast duty. So I used the hour I have to myself to quickly get dressed and work on the Tyson's edge a bit. It arrived fairly sharp but after about five minutes work on a fine bench stone and about two minutes on 600 grit wet/dry paper over leather, the edge popped hairs off my arm.

Todays breakfast was french toast made from a two day old baguette. The Tyson glided through the crusty loaf with no crushing or deforming of the bread. I know, not much of a challenge for a bushcraft knife but duty determines use in this house.

After driving my girls to school, I arrived home and began making preparations for a hike with my wife. I packed some cheddar cheese and a summer sausage along with three mutsu apples for My 2.5 yeear old, Eli, Margaret and myself.

Our hike was a little more challenging than we anticipated so when we arrived at a nice spot, we definitely were looking forward to our snack. My wife sliced the apples, cheese, sausage and her thumb. The thin profile easily wend through all three media with very little resistance and no crumbly of the fairly dry hunk of cheese we had. teh blade did stain slightly even though I wiped it clean with a cloth.

Next, I made a hiking stick for Eli who up to now was riding in my kid-carrier back pack. I quickly cut and de-limbed a three foot long 3/4" diameter pole using the bend and cut n the outside of the bend method on a sapling. This was no challenge for the Tyson.

Now let me digress here to say that like most of you here, I own many knives. There are some I think are beautiful but are not very comfortable to use for very long. Others that are very comfortable but require a bit more force to push through material due to a thick edge. The Tyson, despite it's size was very easy and intuitive to use. I can easily see this knife as someones faithful work horse.

We scrambled out of the woods and made it home in time for lunch. Chef salad. Sliced cukes, sliced egg, turkey, hearts of palm, tomato, onion, romaine all fell by the wayside to the advancing edge of the Tyson. The only shortcoming in kitchen use was the length of the blade with the onion.

Dinner tonight consisted of chicken picatta and mashed potatoes. The Tyson sliced the raw breasts in half into nice heart shapes with ease.

After clean-up I washed the knife and gave the blade some TLC with Wenol and a cloth. most of the stains from today's use came off and the blade looks better than when I received it.

To my shame, my only regret and I hope this does not exclude me from future passarounds is that our digital camera bit the dust today and so I cannot provide any picutre for you guys.

Thanks for the chance to try this knife out. I am thoroughly pleased with the Tyson Bushcraft knife and would recommend it to anyone looking for a qualilty, simple to use, convenient to carry every day and woodsbumming knife.

Tony, I'll give you a call to arrange a drop- off. Unfortunately our days off don't match this week so I can either drop it off tomorrow night after work (around 8:45 pm) or Friday after you get home. Lemme know.

Good review. Once after completing a mission I missed connections with my escape crew which was not unusual in those days. After three days of chewing on plants I made a throwing stick similar to the one above and with a little luck added in, I killed a goat with it and ate good for several days. Put a good point on each end along with some side points and either throw it side arm or end over end depending on the position of the prey and you stand a pretty good chance of doing some serous damage. This one it heavy, about 4-5 lbs. The frog fish spear is really quite effective under the right water conditions. I threw this one pretty hard into the ground out in the yard without rendering it useless.

Some pictures I forgot to post of this knife on kitchen duty

Great review and do not worry about the blade staining. If you want to clean it up just take some emery cloth I use 80 grit on all the knives I make just sand from from the handle to the tip in a back and forth motion be care not to slip off the edge and cut your self. It will take the stains and the patina right off if you want it that way.
sorry to hear about your wifes thumb.

udt jim how big was the goat and where were you when you did that. If you can tell. LOL It might be classified. I once threw my 4 D cell mag light and at a rabbit and konked it on the head killed it real quick. I was about 12' to 14' feet from it.

The goat was about the size of small pronghorn. I don't know if it was domestic or wild but it was food. Better than Monkey:D I ate quite a bit of fire grilled monkey meat as well. Don't taste like chicken. At least not fresh chicken.:thumbdn:

LOL yea I bet it goat does tast better than monkey. I never had monkey and do not plan to. Goat is good and I like there milk to it is nice and rich to me in flavor.

Thanks udt jim.

Nice reviews and info guys. Don't worry about the pics Marcelo. The review was great.

Hey Bryan, I will make sure the knife looks just like new before moving on to its new owner! I got a large box from you today, BTW.

Brian

Great review Marcelo! Give me a call, I think I am next. I can pick it up from you.

Nice, I didn't miss the contest. I am guessing this is one post per person, huh?;)
Thanks for the cool thread Brian.

I picked up this awesome lil knife last night from Marcelo.

I worked all day today and doing the same tomorrow. I am taking the family for a 1 night camp out on Monday and would be able to ship out on Wednesday. I should have my review up by wednesday as well. Brian is this OK? technically I will have the knife for 4 days, I don't want to break any rules.

I know, I know, I'm a pia. But if you think about it. Since Marcelo lives about 6 blocks from me, we cut out 3 days of shipping:D

Hell yeah I like this knife. It has a great utility blade shape, the handle feels great, and its sharp. Whats not to like:thumbup:

Allright, I am done playing for now. I did an overnighter with the family. I had the knife with me for both days and it performed tasks from kitchen duties to fire making.

I really like this knife. It feels good in hand and the blade shape is perfect for an edc in my opinion. The sheath is really nice, but I rather it be thinned down a little.

All in all, it is a great knife. Brian puts a thin edge on his knives whic cuts really well. The tip was strong and pointy. I didn't use this knife to baton anything as its not mine and is a lil small for that. The knife could handle it though.

Oh well, enough babble and on to the pics.
