Bring this tree down?

or worse my old man will go out there one day without me and try it alone.

IMHO, you should have a sit down with your Dad and have him promise you that he won't go anywhere near that tree, til you can get it down.

I rather like the idea of the poster that said burn it down.

simple, safe, cheap. SAFE.

put a ring of bbq briqqutes aorund the base of tree, pile on some seasoned wood....light it and sit back on the porch with Dad, a beer and a camera.

norcalblacktail is an arborist and could give you some tips, he went hunting for the weekend and should be back soon I think.

If you live out in the country with no one around, take some cheap dog chain and chain up 3 or 4 old tires around the tree base so they can't fall down. Then dump some diesel in the tires and a couple quarts of waste oil on the trunk and light it up at about 10 at night so no one sees all the smoke. Those tires will burn anything down.

I mean this is just like starting a fire using a piece of rubber inner tube in your fire starting kits, just on a little larger scale. ;)

All trees burn. Pile on some wood and/or charcoal and get a good, steady fire going. Digging under it a bit might help. I dunno for sure. We usually pour on some diesel and let 'er rip. It's time-consuming, but it works and is much safer than wrestling the things down yourself. You could also 'paint' a bit of it with home-made "napalm" and light that.

Well whatever you do make sure you have a buddy film it.
Because based on a lot of these suggestions if it works out OK and no one is seriously hurt you can send it in to America's Funniest Home Videos. :p

Now in the case of death, disfigurement, or you burn down part of the surrounding area, make sure the film is destroyed before any insurance companies find it or the authorities subpoena it.

Go here and order a Silky tree saw, with the pole. You can extend it out safely and stay clear of the tree. Cut at the base there and let the trunk fall. The pole will keep you clear of any rolling or bouncing - just make sure that, if the pole gets caught up with the fall and gets stuck within it, you let go. I've done this with tree saws and it is dafe if you use common sense.

Vertical hole drilled into the tree a foot beyond the damage, fill with gunpowder about 2 ounces, electric fuse. Find some shelter and let her go. If you actually choose to do this I take no responsibility, I'd prolly do it but like someone else said, I wouldn't actually recommend you do that.

If you actually choose to do this- please post it on YouTube and send us a link.

Here's a vote for the low-tech approach, a combo of the earlier ones: charcoal fire in the trunk, then a few boxes of 12ga slugs. Repeat from a safe distance until she comes down.

Yes VIDEO! Would be cool to see any attempt (with your safety in mind, of course) just to see what would happen...

Fire sounds good to me though.

I just want to be sure I understand. Is it safe or daft to do this, if using common sense?:)

I've done it on about 12 occasions with no problem whatsoever - and all of mine were free falls, not hung up in another tree. That said, I've done a lot of work with and around trees, so I am pretty confident I can gauge how they'll fall. Never had a problem.

If you have no idea how the dynamics work, and are not confident, hire a professional. Or, WVHILLS, I'll drive up to WV for the cost of gas and take this puppy out for ya! :D

by the time I read everything I found my answer posted, pile up some brush, light it, and move out. the tree it is leaning on will push it and the butt of the tree may , will come at you when it burns in two, but then it still could be hung up in that other tree and not fall. some one said not to use rope, I have pulled alot of trees down or over with rope, try it or not but just don't jerk it :jerkit: be gentle.
