Bruce Bump's Brutus Axe-Matchlock

Oh yeah, thats it but I had to grind down the O.D. to .580 to fit in my barrel.
Have you shot this one? How much powder did you arrive at? How is the breech plug made? Is it brass and threaded?

It was about half finished in that picture Bruce. I did finish it and shoot it about 20 times before it's new owner got it.

I proofed it with 100 grains and 2 balls. It didn't flinch. The most accurate load I found for it was 45 grains of 3F, and that was a fairly stiff load. Watch your pressures, they climb very fast in the small bores.

The breech plug was turned from a bolt with all except the top flat turned to match the diameter of the round barrel. I brazed a brass tang on the rear and the peep (Fully adjustable for windage and elevation) which was made using a Brass British shilling. was mounted on the flat.

To be honest, I built it for me. I was going to use it for squirrels. Last summer, I provided all the computer and technical equipment to an HBO mini series and ran across a construction crew working the movie, from California.

They were the first decent Californians I had ever met. One day they asked me to take them shooting. One of them had never fired a gun and to be honest, was fairly anti gun in his thinking.

I took them to my range. I took about 10 handguns, 2 shotguns, a couple of AK's and 3 muzzleloaders. This was one.
He loved shooting and burned up 1000 rounds in the AK's.....but his favorite was the little squirrel gun. I gave it to him as a gift.

When they left, I found a bag in my office. It had a dozen old pistols that they had been stashing away from different movies over the years.

I wish I had taken pictures after it was finished but here is one when I was carving the stock. It gives you an idea what it looked like.

Unbelievably beautiful work. I didn't even know such a craftsman still exsisted. Thank you for posting pics.

I thought maybe some of the newbies would like to see the one I wish I wouldnt have sold. I miss this little axe/gun. Maybe I will make another one before I get too old.

Thanks for bringing this thread back. Thats AWESOME,do you have more PICS ???? HUH HUH HUH

I had forgotten about this one too. Thanks for jogging the memory.
Recently I got a lathe and haven't figured what would be the first project. I'm now leaning towards something like this. Not as elegant but somewhere along these lines.
Thanks again for the memory slam.

I have some great shots of the progress of this one, unfortunately they are trapped on a siezed hard drive from our old computer. Thats the trouble with digital photography and me. I should back up the files I have on this hard drive before it crashes.
