Brut de forge hybrid

Hey Joe,

actually Ray had asked me if I was righty or lefty before positioning the crown and I'm a righty. He asked for my input on positioning but after some consideration, I left the final decision up to his expertise for the best combo of aesthetics and comfort in the right hand. I'm sure everybodys point of view is different, but it looks to me like it will sit perfectly in the right hand.

When I make a fist and look at the palm side of the fist, I see my palm extends further out than my clenched pinky finger does, so the shorter side of the grip (where the crown turns in) looks to be in position for my pinky to mold right into it, with more room on the opposite side for my wider palm to spread out on.

Just my viewpoint :D

Thanks for the welcome!

-Cliff

Thanks Cliff! Until ya pick 'em up. sometimes ya just can't tell! Nice score!

ray-could u tell us what u did to test the knife...did u break it in a vice to look at the grain ?....or did it break while u were testing it.....ryan

Basically I did some chopping on a good sized chuck of cherry and then checked to see if it held an edge. Got to remember this is almost a 62 year old man doing the chopping. The edge was fine. Then I put it in a vise and bent the snot out of it. Then I put it in the forge and straightened it out. Quenched it in water and just broke it in half just to see how hard it would actually get. It didn't take much to snap it. I guess I figured if I broke it in half I wouldn't think about it again.

Chuck, Thanks a lot! What year did we do that?

Thanks Ray, glad to be here. I've got a pretty good sized right paw, so the Hybrid should find itself right at home once it gets here!

Nice work on the other two blades. The other Brute looks nice so far!

Cliff, Here's how the other Brute looks now. I still need to put more finish on the handle. I'll get it epoxied tonight.

I always like your knives and this one is no exception. The shape of the blade and the way it's finished are appealing, and the handle has a very nice shape.

Those are both beauties.

What do you have planned for the little halfling left from the test?

Thanks Ryan...that was one of the blades Ray made from that one piece of old time (late 19th Century) saw blade that he originally though was shear steel - but was more likely "cast" steel (a type of crucble steel) based on the etch anyway

Ray - we did that one in Novemeber 1995 - how time flies eh!
This one is VERY nice

Joe - FWIW: regarding handedness - I do and have done a lot of antler grips and oddly while sometimes they may "look " left or right sometimes they "feel" better in the opposite hand so all of mine I judge by feel rather than look and fairly often they work either way with only a slight difference in the "feel" - others are definite rights or lefts....

I just got the epoxying done on Curly. I like them both.

Excellent work Ray. They look incredible next to one another. Curly looks like more of a gentlemans knife... well maybe not on it's own but next to the more savage Hybrid with it's somewhat more angular and aggressive lines and the Crown hilt, Curly looks much more tame than it would standing alone.

Still amazes me that just days ago those knives were nothing but ideas and leaf springs!

Chuck, Couldn't have been 95. I was still learning how to make knives then. I guess I still am. Had to have been after the turn of the century although time has been picking up speed. :D

Sorry Ray that should be 2005 - late hours + migraine = brain fart

Ray another Beauty. I haven't seen a piece from you yet that I didn't like.
You make it easy for a guy to want to spent some money....

Here's where I'm at with the knife this morning. Did a quick rub and etch on the blade. Got a piece of wagon wheel ready to be changed into a guard and another smaller piece of the same set into the crown. It should look more like a knife after the guard is shaped.

Here it is with the guard ruffly shaped. I'm starting to like it now.

Its pretty much a done deal now. Before I epoxy the handle I'll give the butt cap some shape but for right now I need to leave it the way it is.
