I just want one for all my other lil' things that I have to settle with "sharp enough" when what I really want is a rasor. I have a few itty bitty really soft ceramic rods (3"long 1/8"thick), but they don't allow you to get a good rasor edge. I know I am being nit picky, but it would be nice to know that I cam put a rasor edge on any of my knives.

Dave it's easy to make a strop. The hard part is sometimes finding the proper leather.
I prefer 9-10 Oz vegetable tanned cowhide. Leather is measured in thickness by ounces with 1/64" being one ounce.
The thicker leather has a bit more give and helps to maintain a convex edge.
And I prefer mine glued to a piece of soft wood like white
pine.
And for sharpening khukuris I don't like the strop any wider than 1" to 1 1/8 inch.
That lets getting into the smaller recurves easier.
Make the board about 20" or so long with a nice handle about 4 1/2" long.
Glue the leather on and then charge the leather with the abrasive of your choice.
And that's all there is too it.

I have only two strops at the moment.
One is charged with Tripoli, 1st strop, and the other with Jewelers
Rouge, 2nd strop.
One of these days I will get around to making me another charged with Chromium Oxide, 3rd strop,
which is supposed to be about the finest abrasive there is.
I sometimes use neatsfoot oil on the leather to help the abrasive stick too the leather better.
But you can get by with just 2 strops if you wish.
I would recommend the Tripoli and then the Chromium Oxide if you have only the two. You will just have to strop with the 2nd one a bit more when doing the final sharpening.

You can do a search to find out where you can get the fine abrasives here in the H.I.Forum.
The topic's been discussed several times.

Hope that helps.

Dave,

Back when I was researching katanas, I read an article by some reputable sword makers who had tested some katanas in the quality/price range of the Kris Cutlery one. The kris katana out performed them all in cutting tests. They even hacked into Cow bone! The other katanas chipped and I think one broke! The Kris Kat, (which is made of 5160 spring steel) only showed a small "roll-over of the edge, which was sharpened back out---same thing a good khuk edge would do. the Celtic sword is much more flashy, with Macassar ebony and brass handle, where the katana has a brass Tsuba and a parashute cord wrapped handle--its a no-nonsense cutting blade. There are plenty of sword guys around here that can tell you better about Kris Cutlery's stuff. IMHO, for the money (and even for alot more money) they are very nice blades!

Check out the Korambit, I've got one of these wicked "little" beasts

(click on the thumbnail, the knife looks nothing like that when enlarged!)
