Buck 110 vs Modern Folders

I got my 1st Buck 110 in the 70's and have had more than a few 110's, 112's and other models over the years....

It was a landmark knife in it's day and a hit from the start and even today it's a household word as in someone says Buck Knife and people picture the 110...

Still very popular today and extremely easy to find and still very cost effective at under $40 it's hard to argue against it really.

Start comparing it to the more modern folders and being fair it does start to come up short in various ways. That's not to say it's a bad knife, but it's getting dated at this point.

In the end they still sell well and I believe that won't change anytime soon so they will be seeing use for many years to come.

The geometry is fine, the steel is reasonable in the price point, it is on the heavy side, but the belt sheath helps that for carry.

For the rest, well that's comes down to individual opinions, perception etc based on a variety of things..

It's all about what works. This year, I'll be packing the same Valor Super Sport into the woods for deer hunting that I have carried for 30 years. It's only a lowly 440, but my dad gave it to me... And it has worked flawlessly for the 30 years that I have had it.

Yes, my new skinning knife is a S30V, but so what. Some people don't feel the need to run out. Purchase what all the cool kids have.

I'm not dogging on anyone for their knife choice. Buy what you like and use what you buy. They are only tools. :)

  A couple of my most carried and best loved knives, folders and fixed, are 440-x. And those my father gave me or owned are the most precious of all to me.

The 110 pivot is a solid rod, threaded pivots are hollow tubes. You might be surprised to find out which one is actually stronger.

The solid pivot is solid brass. In this respect, the old Schrade were stainless and stronger and less prone to bending.

The old Bucks had no and later steel pivot bushing which were a bit rough but didn't deform. The new ones use softer bronze one that deform under load. New Bucks use stamped parts with more variance in them.

Most of all, the joint is a simple peened pivot that can't with stand lateral force.

My Opinel's are infinitely stronger than any Buck I've owned.

I love the traditional lines of the 110. I agree it is heavier than most most modern offerings, but that can be changed. It's like a 69 Camaro with a suspension upgrade

Titanium bolsters and screws anodized yellow with carbon fibre scales: It's about 5 oz now.

I don't consider a 110 under an opinel.

The Buck 110 has better grind for processing meat, has flat side which are useful for side holding and can be easily cleaned under hot soapy water. Better for game and fish.

The Opinel's blade has a better geometry for wood and slicing just about everything else. The joint is much, much, much stronger than the 110. The handle is good for wood working. Better for Edc and hard cutting.

This topic started a riot over a chris Reeves knife lol. Anyway, ive got bunches of 110s and 112s and there all rock solid. (Not on this thread) but knocking the 110 isnt American. Everyone knows about a 110 weather ur a buck fan or not. Its probably the most popular knife out there. There just a great solid knife. And yes buck is coming out with a thumb studded pocket clip version of the 110. I have had a old 2 dot with a stud and clip for years. Cant beat them ·110·

For some reason I don't expect an opinel to overcome the 110 in an abuse test. Please prove me wrong.

It's possible the newer generations aren't made as well as the older, one I had within last 10 years had wiggle in all directions and the edge was hitting the lock spring. But, my dad's 40 year old 110 has been to hell and back and looks like it, it's still tight! It has a wee but of up and down but that's it.

I got my last 110 at Walmart about 7-8 years ago. I got the kid at the counter to take out about ten of them. I took them all out of their boxes and visually inspected/felt/listened for walk and talk. I took the strongest/tightest decent looker of the bunch. I did help the kid put the rest back in their boxes. That knife got little use and still snaps nicely. The black leather sheath is polished and has a warped permanent set to it from being worn while driving. I wore it while driving night shift taxi to get through some post secondary. I had zero desire to pull it out in those circumstances, but it gave me a mild degree of comfort knowing that it was there. Drive aggressive/obnoxious drunks around at 3 AM and you'll understand. Actually, a guy that I cross shifted with was chopped with a machete.

I still like my 110 but prefer other folders for hard use.

I got these off eBay for a great price. I don't think they're used much at all, if any. They're really tight ATM. I will try one doing the same things I used the Wal-Mart 110 for and see how it holds up.

Nobody is knocking the 110, I tell it like it is and mine was lacking. If I find one down the road that holds up well, I'll tell that as well. I like Buck fixed blades so, it's nothing to do with the brand. One of my favorite larger fixed blades...

If you really believe they can't be beat, I will send Ankerson one of these Cold Steels and you send him a 110 and he can do a torture test and see which holds up the best. He can video the results, like he has before and post it in this thread. (he's pretty good at hard use testing & makes a nice video to go along with the results) You've nothing to fear besides the Tri-ad lock and a larger threaded pivot. Surely your American made Buck can kick my Taiwanese made junks butt?

Maybe Pinnah can send an opinel to round out the test. If not no worries. I'm all for testing.

Buckman has to agree first and yes the offer is for him only, because he's the most vocal supporter and he has so many excellent examples of the 110. He can put up his best, if he wants to prove the 110 "can't be beat". After all the threads title is , Buck 110 vs Modern folders and the Cold Steel is way more modern.
