Buck 119 Special LE - poor quality!

I will bring this up with Value Stream 4 where these are made. This is a process question and not an operator error and processes can be adjusted. I feel that for a user knife I don't know that I would care but for a Limited Edition I agree with the original post.

Thanks for raising the issue.

Buckaholic you did it know, shame on you I did not need the big leather handled knife and was trying to avoid the temptation but my dog’s got a birthday coming up and that Pathfinder looks nice. Thanks!

Not to totally threadjack but that Bean knife is a knice knife. The stacking quality is good and it's a good looking knife. I may add the 105LL to my EDC rotation. But that logo bugs the heck outta me.

Thanks CJ!!! I will definitely order one as I see reports of progress in this area.

Mr. CJ Buck,

Thank you for personally responding to my post/this thread and giving it your attention.

Best regards,
Mike

I discussed this with Billy Bates, the Value Stream Manager for our collectibles, and one of the operators came up with a solution (a new buff compound and a new wheel) that looked really clean. There were about 20 of the knives in Packing that were being reworked as I left.

I asked Joe to post some pictures of the improvement

Again...thanks for raising the issue.

now all you guys passing through this forum know why Buck Knives is our fav balde!
were else can you get a personal response and action from the big guy on the mountain?
how cool is that? :D

Arrived yesterday.
Added some lighting on the handle pics to show it better.
Pretty happy camper (would've like the bone to match better but no biggie).

I just ordered one of these and got it a couple of days ago it is really nice overall, but there is one thing that bugs me a little about it - one of the bone rings seems to have been crushed or chipped a little on the bottom of the handle. what do you guys think about this - maybe I am being too picky here?

Here are a couple of other photos - I got these 3 119s and 4 other bucks in the last couple weeks! I've gone a little crazy from this buck fever :)

It's too hard to tell from that pic...but let's talk about the stacked leather...From Haebbie's comments (and pics) on his stacked leather knives, I'd have to say that Buck's attempts to offer a similarly buffed stacked leather disk grip leaves a lot to be desired...

For a user (as CJ has stated), it would be OK...but for a collectible Special Custom???...

......Are those little leather "hairs" sticking up all over your disks???

It doesn't look like it was finish buffed at all!!! It looks even worse than SeattleTom's...

I hope CJ is still following this thread...

I'm sure glad I didn't buy one of these......seriously thought about buying one.

Maybe C.J. should just get on the phone to Kabar and ask them how to do it correctly.

Here is a slightly better picture - I dont think I can do any better then this with the camera that I have.. There looks to be an almost invisbile hairline crack or two under the dip, so it might have happened when the leather was compressed.. No hairs sticking out on mine, but I think I'd take some hairs sticking out over the chipped / cracked ring :(

I do really like the look of the stacked leather otherwise - maybe a part of the problem with the hairs sticking out is that whatever they are using to seal the leather isnt working so well?

Yep...it was hairy. But, as you stated in your other post, for a user what the hey.

I have been using my 119SLE as my only fixed blade since I got it...because I didn't care for the bone not "matching" and the rough leather as a "Limited Edition".
Didn't bug me too much...but enough for it to become a "user".

So, since I have been using it, the hairs have worn down.

Ka-Bar does it right!!!!

As for Tom's chipped bone. I see it. If it is a collectable for you, I'd send it back...but it seems you run the risk of getting something else that will bug ya...like tri-colored disks and hairy leather. ;)

The third bone disk on mine is a little bit darker also, but that doesnt bother me.. It looks like it might be just discolored from when the bone disks and leather stack were sanded to shape.

This was going to be a collectible but I might just start using it too..
I dont know - maybe I'll even try my luck again and order another one as a collector.. Or maybe I'll add a Ka-bar to my little collection :)

IIRC according to Haebbie, the knives he has in his collection [Pumas???] did not use any sealer and were smooth as glass...No hairies, no rough spots...

I don't know...You guys that are content to use them as daily users are missing Buck's mark...CJ has stated they are Limited Edition collectibles...Not workaday tools...And if they're of such questionable quality that you have no qualms about tossing them in your tacklebox and rattling them around in your pickup truck, then Buck is overcharging you and wasting a lot of time and $$$ of their own on a product that doesn't live up to expectations...

...$.02... :)

Now that sums things up nicely. It's called a wake-up call, people.
