Buck 194/195 & 694/695 Alpha Hunter.

So I had a chance to handle a 664 Alpha Hunter today.
...The weather was pretty iffy, and Cabelas was just down the road from the jobsite so...😊
....That and I haven't been in there in years. Boy have things changed since BPS took over.😣

Anyways,

I'm impressed. (With the knife).👍

First thought: That thing is light and felt quite nimble in my hand.
I can appreciate the various grips you can do with it, which you really cannot do with other skinning knives like a 113, or my favorite 192. Nor any of the previous Alphas for that matter.

Second: I like the handle.
It seems as tho it would remain grippy when wet, which is a concern with a wood handle knife.
I'm sure it would clean up well, I'm not a germ-a -phobe, but it's wise to keep things clean when possible.
.....Heck, I believe Buck advertises the handles as being removable....
Yet I found the handle to be a bit small feeling in my hand. I like big round handles, and this just felt smaller in my hand than a Vanguard does. Tho I'm sure a larger diameter handle would make the knife feel less nimble, so I'm sure it's a compromise on Buck's part.

The blade was great.
One of my favorite things about skinning knives is that the cutting edge is below the handle.
You can actually use them on a cutting board without having to constantly raise the handle of the knife to keep your fingers off the board while holding the knife. And obviously that's an advantage while skinning as well.
They're versatile.
And the wider blade gives me a sense of security when cutting up a rib cage while field dressing larger game.
The jimping makes sense, and I think the blade length is just about right.
I really like flat grind knives! Really!

I didn't get a chance to check out the sheath, and really sorta got side tracked looking at other knives.

But I keep thinking about this one......
And the Ruger GP-100 they had in stock I really wanted....

Anyways.
Some shared thoughts on a knife I think I may just have to have.
Thanks.

Maybe I should have started another thread, but there's some pretty good content here that includes the new Alphas.

Awesome review!

I don't even go into Cabela's anymore because BPS changed too much of what I liked about Cabela's. :(

I too enjoyed your review GPyro GPyro
Did you purchase the 664 AH?
I got mine the first day it was available on the Buck site. I know they were available earlier elsewhere but can you say discount.
My first real gun was a S&W 686-1 that i still have. My son went Gp-100 and also 101 both with short barrels unlike my 686 with a 6 inch.

Thanks guys.
The new alphas are pretty nice knives.

I intended to go home and order one, but that night we got hit with a pretty serious storm.
We lost power for 5 days, and I have more big trees down around me than I can safely cut.
So there goes a couple thousand dollars.
Glad I didn't buy the gun!

Anyways, it really was sorta cool as everyone around here is talking to each other now, instead of being strangers. The neighborhood got together and we opened up the road so we could get out.

I have every intention of getting that knife, I'm just sorta waiting for the dust to settle.

My favorite revolvers are Rugers.
I'm not the guy that shoots much, so I like everything to be familiar when I do.
I have a few revolvers, but I've always wanted a large frame .357.
I should've bought one a few years ago...... Prices lately.... Sheez.

What state you in? Time of the year for storms i just wondered which area yours was?
Also i have found the Ruger revolvers have the nicest/smoothest actions. But i only compare it to my S&W’s i own. The one Colt I operated the action on was to me the same as the Rugers.

This little airweight model 360 is my around the house 357. I had my favorite gunsmith work a trigger job on it old school. Trimmed the two springs down a tad. Something the S&W people showed him how to do but that was a long time ago. Probably voids the warranty lol.
