Buck 560!

...Do you think that a 560 could be converted to a takedown verison?

I haven't seen one yet, so I'm not sure...I have looked at that 186 pic from eBay, showing the 186 stripped down...The 186 has a tapped liner/scale on one side...

But the 560 is riveted...so if you wanted to use a screw the same size as the rivet (I'm guessing 5-40), you'd have to plug the rivet holes on the back side of the 560 and then tap the plugs...or you could use a smaller size [2-56] and run a screw from both sides into a long 1/8" OD tapped stud...

And the 186 uses a special bushed rockerbar...not a standard 110 part...so if the 560 uses a 110 rockerbar, you'd have to build the metal up where the hole is to take a bushing...or just leave the screw loose...

I don't have the tooling precise enough to make 1/8" OD studs with 2-56 internal threads...and neither Jantz or Texas Knife have 1/8" OD studs long enough...

But I probably could press in a plug...and tap it 5-40...

So far, that's my thinking...

I can probably make a Titanium scale, though...Here's my thought on that: Strip a 110, mill the bolsters flat, make a Titanium full-length scale w/560 profile & 5 holes drilled through, assemble so that the brass liner is visible through the Titanium bolster...use 110 blade/rockerbar/spacer/spring for simplicity...tap one scale for 5-40, relieve the other scale for the head...deal with the blade & rockerbar pivots with some sort of bushing (still looking into that)...

Actually, I'm going ahead with this idea...if the Titanium proves too tough, I'll use 304 SS instead...

Finding the time is the big obstacle... :(

My interest stems from a desire to anodonize my crystal Ti 560 another color than gold:barf:. The coloring part seems simple enough...

Preston - Do you have anodizing capability??? A shop setup perhaps??? :)

Preston...why are you going to cover up the diamonds in the 560 body? Are you going to replace the titanium blade? ;)
Seriously, what are you going to to this project for? It's a nice tool as it is.
Is it a beater?

...   ...560's got Titanium blades?!?!?!?...

Oh, that's right...That's so UDT frogmen can take apart magnetic mines without having to pry their knives loose with claw hammers... :D

Chickentrax...
Remember near the start of this thread...the guy on e-bay was saying the blade on auction had a titanium blade? So Preston and I have been making
little quips here on the forum about my enjoying the 560 "with titanium blade"

I won (you, El Pollo, are the reason I have it...thanks! )
And since it was interesting that the guy billed it as having a titanium blade, I ASSume the "crystal" flecks in the body are actually diamond ;) .
Certain the guy just didn't know...honest mistake. But I am happy as I've wanted a 560 for awhile.
I AM A LUCKY BUCK!!!

Trax, here's the post that really got me turn on to this. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=383811

And the other. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387358

There is another(haven't figured how to put two or more links in one shot so I'll come back and edit this.

Before I go to the trouble to set this up, I want to to be able to get the 560 back together and working. I could only follow part of what you were telling me because I know so little about the 186. not having paid attention in class like you, Trax. Except that it's out of my $$$$ league:eek:.

So I'll post that other link.

Goose, no it's not a beater...yet:D. Preston

If I get hold of it, it will be...

Trax, I meant me, not you:o. I have been looking at some of the wonderful work some of the custom makers are doing the colors and texturing(I drool and slobber all over everything;)).

I'm willing to send it to you for inspection and experiment if you want. It would cerainly get better treatment at your hands than in mine for these purposes.

Just let me know. Preston

Yep, my concern is what to do about the rivets...

Doesn't matter...I found another one...Doesn't look like much yet...needs some polishing... :p

Wow...it even says "never used". Like in that movie "Full Metal Jacket"..."m-16 rifles for sale, issued to the South Vietnamese Army, never fired, dropped once".

I can't wait to see what you're up to. :)

...Must have a big ol' "Shillin' " Clan up there in Portland. I think I steered ya to a pair of busted up 110's Trax...not a 560. Looks like you have a nice start going there too...

Check out the bidders, DarrylS...Methinks there be shills about...

I wondered about that when I looked at the bidders...how does that shill'n work?

Trax, Good looking start:thumbup: Some questions...is the brass for patterns or liners? If liners, why? Do you plan to anodize? How's that titanium to work...cut and file? Preston

Preston...Ebay describes it this way..."Shill Bidding is bidding that artificially increases an item’s price or apparent desirability, or bidding by individuals with a level of access to the seller’s item information not available to the general Community."...Ebay doesn't allow it if it catches it. If I had a very large group of friends or family members involved in the sale of something, I could get each one to sign up on Ebay and toss out bids to up the price on something I was selling. If no one takes the "bait" and a family member wins on a shill bid there's no problem for me as no money has to change hands and I can put it up for bids again later. You do see lots of it on the "BAY"...but from here it's tough to prove...

Good explanation, Darryl! :)

Liners.
Contrast - brass under Ti. (Holes in Ti)
No - anodizing surface hardens...I don't want it hard. (But if you get your anodizer going, I have some Aluminum that needs anodiziing) ;)
I cut with power hacksaw/holesaw. Drilled w/HSS. So far, so good...

DarrylS,

Thank you for that explanation. I can see how it would be difficult to prove. Plus the time involved for e-bay would most likely be prohibitive from their point of view...much like the misuse of the Buck name and descriptions/condition of auction items. Wonder if we'll see that 560 again? Shills, another good reason for me to back-off!! Preston

Trax, yes indeed, so far so good, I like the idea of contrast:thumbup:, FWIW I've seen some brass stipled that's looked right fine.

Don't go holding your breath for me to get anodizing anything that I'm not going to to be able to get back together:eek:. My neighbor is a machinist, I going to ask him about my plans and see what he suggests.

I would have thought that you would have had to have a bandsaw to get cuts like that...you continue to amaze:). Preston
