Buck Marksman, looking for comments...

My previous post was in response to MT_POKT.
if the screws on the strap were tight then the whole lock assembly and or the back spacer had to have moved backward? Something must have been loose for that to happen no? Did it have a very hard landing (dropped a long way?)? I am surprised to hear this account of yours so thanks for posting. Have you since been able to set the knife back up to function properly?

Ah ok, I was confused who you were replying to.

Nothing was loose, the part of the backspacer that the strap is attached to forcibly moved backwards alomg the adjustmemt screw enough that there was not enough clearance for the blade to engage the strap. It was a fall from a little less than counter height.

When I originally posted it people on the buck forum attacked me for somehow causing the issue, comparing it to me running a car into a tree or some such nonsense. But if I drop a framelock, it still works. I know shortly after I posted the same thing happened to another member as well.

I was able to fix it but I don't trust it anymore, I like to know that my knife will work all the time. Yes, it's a strong lock, as long as there is no force against the front of the strap.

The flaw is that there are too many moving parts, if the backspacer was one piece instead of two adjustable sections, it most likely would have still worked. So that's why I just use it for gardening around my cabin now.

Yeah I liked the design, just not it's fragility. But I now have a custom Demko AD15 which has a similar lock so I'm happy

If all that damage happened to that knife with a fall less than 40", why didn't you send to Buck for repair? I can't believe the fall alone did that much damage.

Because I could fix it once I got the right size tiny allen wrench. I don't think you quite understand what happened, it wasn't damage per se, it forced the carrier backwards knocking the strap out of alignment. It needed to be readjusted with the allen wrench. Watch the video that was posted to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Besides I tend not to send things back. I have a ZT where the pocket clip was ripped off and part of the screws were left in the frame and a $1200 watch that stopped working that's sitting on my desk. If I didn't send those back I'm not going to worry about a sub $100 knife that I wasn't going to use seriously anymore.

Edit: there was a small amount of damage to the strap where it impacted the floor. You can see a flat spot on the edge of the strap

It's definitely not more fragile. And if it falls it still works.
You are right. Strong cool knife but it's comparing Apple's to Oranges.

Do you have pics or just talking about a knife you like? Do you have pics of the damaged Marksman? Or is the problem theoretical?

Obviously I said it was my knife numerous times, so why would it be theoretical? This happened over two years ago so any pictures I had were a few phones back.

And it's not comparing apples to oranges when they have a similar locking mechanism. It's comparing a regular apple to a golden apple. It's just a lot more expensive apple

Yes, I believe that's the point I was making. One has a design flaw that will render it inoperable if dropped the wrong way, and one does not. Not a hard concept. Just as an fyi, if you have never handled an AD15 i would suggest you do, it is very light for it's size.

Anyway, the original point of my first post was to let the OP know about my experience with the knife. I have done so and it's gorgeous outside so I'm off to do fun things.

ad15 demko is a great knife. hes tied to cold steel employment so never gonna happen but....sure would love to see a buck triad or scorpion locked folder....

Are you talking about a model "scorpion" or a 110 with a scorpion?
a new buck model but with the scorpion lock which is a bit different than the marksmen lock. similiar but different enough. truth be told rather have a tri-ad buck 110 screwed together instead of pinned and my ever chasing but rarely getting pocket clip.:)

So exactly the same, but different...
yes Sir you could put it that way.:)

kinda like comparing the axis lock to the caged ball bearing lock. work the same but enough differences both got patents. also kinda like demkos tri-ad compared to a backlock. added the stop pin to the backlock design. pretty darn smart.

the scorpion lock has a patent on it or in process.

My 830 was shipped to me in two separate packages one with the handle the other with the blade and hardware/clip parts. The Handle arrived today and I am looking forward to the rest of the parts next week. Have to say that I am looking forward to this Buck. Will let you know when then rest of the parts arrive and I put it all back together.
