My pick for survival is the 119.
After reading all the positive comments about the 124, I had to have one, which arrived yesterday, and I am very pleased with it. Tho mine is a 1986 version, with a very robust handle, which I may reshape a little for a better feel in my hand. It is a very sturdy knife, yet quite a bit heavier than the 119. While the 124 would handle more chopping type chores better than the 119, I would pick the 119 for my survival choice, as it would handle all the cutting chores, would work fine batoning, and is a more handy size and weight for carry. My 2 cents

TAH will come back on and post these up dates.
My early 124 is 6 - 11/16". My early 120 is 7- 1/2". A difference of 13/16" so over 3/4". I think either could work but I prefer the shape and
features of the 124. (lanyard hole, full tang, micarta handle, stainless pommel) Even though I have used a 120 more. DM

For survival, if I could only have one, it would probably have to be the 124

And thank you, David. I will start prowling for one. I may just buy a newer one and put the micarta of my choosing on there. I don't know yet. I'll see what strikes my fancy.
If you do rehandle one, would sure like to see photos of the project

yes Sir. that almost extra inch just feels better. the 120 length makes me grab the 120 more often but i do prefer the 124 shape and feel. just needs a little more steel. although flip that and make a 120 wider (spine to edge) like the 124 instead of such thin stock...it could easily fill that hole for me as well.

I haven't been on this thread in awhile but that is cool.To me if the 119 didn't have the top part of the guard I would like it a lot more.
I agree that the 119 works better with out the top guard. A dremel fixes that pretty quick.

Looks great, deltablade! I like the slightly ramped top guard instead of being straight with the spine.

Here's one (not mine) that also had the point modified. Not a very good example, but it gives you an idea.

Nice mods. did you also reshape the handle? looks like some taper at front and rear.
