Buck "Survival" Knife?

I was wondering when the first Brahma would show up, since they weren't available when this thread started 2 years ago.

I'll play. I'm thinking I would choose the 639. Lightweight with some alternative cutting surfaces on the spine and no serrations on the blade.

There was a similar thread about 4 years ago.... Dumped in the Woods, what knife and gun.

I have 639 for sale. Bill

Is that a vote or a sale ad?

I would count that as a 'negative' vote. I think Sierrawill is saying he can survive without it.......:)

Oh dang. That would cancel out my (one and only) vote for the 639.....

I'm kind of chuckling that the Selkirk, the knife made to cater to the bushcraft/survival crowd, has only three votes. I'm curious if it's a byproduct of the Buck crowd not really being part of the bushcraft crowd, or a byproduct of the bushcraft crowd not really being part of the Buck crowd?

Seems like it's a nice shape for a hunting knife too.

For me, it's a byproduct of being part of the Made in the USA crowd. I can't deny it's a nice knife though, have at it. I'll stick with it's older brother, the USA made 192 Vanguard.

I'm selling the Buck 639.
Yes, I know. This is not the place for a sale alert. The last thing we want to do is upset Survival Gnome. :D

More than anything, it's probably that the Selkirk is a new model and has the challenge of competing with the popularity and 50-year track record of the 124, 119, and 110. I do not own a Selkirk, but it looks like a capable knife.

Thanks for that info. As a result, I had to order a Selkirk to check it out. Will be here Thursday. I have a few knives made in Taiwan, and they are excellent performers. So I have concluded that the quality of manufacture exists in Taiwan, if the manufacturer has a good QC program, and am betting Buck does. Should be fun.

The Selkirk is a great knife, especially for outdoor use. The flat grind makes it hard wearing and the comparatively thin blade makes the easy using. I voted for this knife (don't count it again, please). The only negative side is, it is made in China and not in the USA.

I initially voted for the MWG. I think that knife is a great little knife. I believe the Compadre Camp knife and or one of the Ron Hood knives would be one of the best survival knives. High Carbon, Excellent durability modern designs.

Would you like to make a change? I would be happy to do so. :)

Change made! Great photo of some tough looking knives.

Most of these are too big.
I don't want to lug that much weight around at my age.
I'll go with this. Just the right size for everything 'cept fighting bears......and I'll pass on that anyway.
