Bad Bud Nealy terrible work

Why is his signature upside down?

Extremely strange how you've had 7 knives, none of which were of a quality satisfactory to you, yet apparently this Bud Nealy fellow (never heard of him myself) has been making excellent knives for at least the last 20 years. I don't know how this could happen, but I'm interested in seeing how it plays out.
I have about 20 pictures and only 4 will post. The picture (with the black marker on the bottom of the blade) is not even ground to a point. It’s 100% dull.
Even if I tried to sharpen this it would be so jacked because how crooked the grind is. He couldn’t even get the handle material right. And what he did put on looks like sh!t. Guys I requested he make this custom for me. This wasn’t something he had on his website. And I agreed to pay extra for the custom made blade. This what he sent me after 5 months. Everybody knows this is sh!ty work. If someone wants to see any of the other pictures just pm me. When I try to upload picture it keeps saying the file is to big for most pictures I took.

I’ve known Bud for 20 years, bought a few of his knives. The first one was an Aikuchi, 1 of 7 when he first started as a full time maker in the late 80s. Every knife I had gotten from him was nothing short of fantastic.

I’ve been to his shop, I only live 30 minutes from his shop and have been there just to pop in because I was in the neighborhood. I’ve always found him approachable and he’s always been quick to address any concerns. After 15 years of use one of his MCS’s developed a split. I carry this knife everyday and have since day one.

Only question I have is for all the people sh*t talkin’ Bud. How many of you folks have held, owned or used his knives? Those are the only opinions I’d be interested. The rest of the comments are just speculation.

The OP is entitled to his opinion about Bud and his last acquisition from him although I do find it strange that you’d buy more knives from him if you were unhappy with any of them.

Give him a chance to make it right. Shoot him a video about what on the knife you’re unhappy with. It’d be a shame to miss out on a great knifemaker because of a bad day at the grinder.

He knows about this. It’s not just the grind. The handle is supposed to be g-10, after they got my deposit I had to call them every time. No return calls or messages. It’s the whole deal. I talked to his wife and she knew I was not happy about them keep changing the day it would even get started.
Obviously I like many others had liked his knifes. All arrived dull (couldn’t cut paper) but then again I sharpen all my knives when I get them unless they are super super sharp. I enjoy doing it. They were all dull, but the grinds were clean and they didn’t look like something a 2 year old could do.
I’m surprised he just doesn’t give me my money back. I feel I have a right to be upset because I paid extra to get extra. In this case I paid extra and got this in the mail. I was excited to get it especially after 5 months.
When I asked for a refund and told hi
I didn’t have faith he could fix this especially since it took 5 months already. He couldn’t give me any turnaround time he would have it back to me. I ordered a $550 knife I got the worst looking knife I’ve ever seen. We all have bad days but this wasn’t done in a day this was several bad days of work. Or someone in training.
There are a ton of other makers out there to take a chance on Bud.

If you saw this in person I think you would have a little less faith in him. He couldn’t even bother to put g-10 on the thing. I just felt really ripped off and felt he just wanted my money. Him taking it and sending something that isn’t even worth $50 is BS.
I didn’t get what I ordered and want my money back he wants me to send it back for him to fix. I already have him 5 months.

I’m not sayin’ you don’t have a right to be upset or ask for a refund. I am on the other hand questioning the dog piling bein’ done by the people who never held, carried or used his knives.

Everytime I see him at a show and pull out the Aikuchi he made nearly 30 years ago he always shows it off to the other people at the show. He’s said to me in the past that he wished he could spend the time like he did with my knife but he had to change his process to accommodate for the volume.

Like I said, “you” have every rite to be upset. What I’d like to hear is from people who’ve owned his knives with the same problem you’ve described and not just, “the knife wouldn’t shave hair.”.

The man is a phenomenal maker and I have always been happy with his work. Granted the last knife I bought was about 6 years ago but everytime I’ve seen him he’s been busy in the shop or he’s been gettin’ ready for the next big show.

I know he does all the big US shows plus a bunch of the European shows so he’s busy. This doesn’t excuse non communication but like I said earlier I’d hate to see his reputation trashed period but especially by people who've never had any of his knives. As always I’d like to hear Bud's response to this.

JMHO.

I think at this point it couldn't hurt to send it back and see what the resolution is from Bud. I believe at best you would get a refund and at worst he sends you back a knife with the issues resolved. At this point I don't think you have anything to lose

I told Bud 2 times (2 days before I posted and again last night) that I was putting this up here. He didn’t seem to care. I’m not sure what’s up with him.
I told him I wanted money back. No response to that. The knife is bad but the way he is just brushing me off makes it worse. It’s like he just doesn’t give a sh!t.
I had the charge for final payment of $365 stopped. But he still has the $200 deposit. I can’t for the life of me understand why $200 is worth his reputation.
Honestly if i was a maker I would pay extra to get this thing back so no one will ever see it.
I’m not thrilled to put this up here and have a lot of stuff I can better spend my time on.
However I think it’s important to keep other knife guys in the loop so this doesn’t happen to someone else.
Thanks for your input guys.

I’m afraid to send him the knife back because he could just decide to keep it and still not give me the deposit. At this point he has $200 and I have the knife. Since I stopped the $365 charge. That was my only recourse I could see. And again this all comes down to trust. And I lost mine from the product and worse his handling of this whole thing. I just want my money back. And as you can see Bud obviously isn’t to worried about making a long customer happy. Or just doing the right thing. This is pretty cut and dry I think. It’s not even close to what I ordered. He himself said the knife was unacceptable. But didn’t even entertain the idea of refund? Wtf??

You bought a bunch of knives from this dude and it doesn't sound like you liked any of them. What are you doing with them?

Why do you keep buying them?

No, he said that he did enjoy all the previous knives he received.

He also said that they were not sharp. Perhaps a minor annoyance but the OP didn't mind as he likes to sharpen them anyways. I think people keep reading that bit and extrapolating that to mean that the previous knives were crap or unsatisfactory.

The OP didn't specifically state that, and that he was more disappointed in how dull they were. At least this is what I got out his statement/s.
Re read what I posted I have repeatable said I loved his knifes. Stop making this about 7 knives I already bought and said I liked all them. I think your reading g other people’s posts who also didn’t read what I said.

Thanks for reading what I wrote. It is annoying how people don’t read what I typed.
I think that’s why a lot of people do t post on here.

Please reread my posts. At no point do I ever say I didn’t like my previous knives. No where do I say that. I have spent a lot of time clearing this up and it something I never said.

I understand where your coming from. If you send knife back he either needs to provide you with what you ordered at the price agreed upon or a refund. If I understand what you said thats going to be hard to accomplish with a partial charge back completed and your still in possession of the original knife. My advice is to call the shop tomorrow and either talk to bud br his wife a mutually agreeable resolution

However Not 1 single one could shave or cut paper. I swear to god.

I misunderstood this part of your post. It's all clear now.

I went back and reread your posts again. I guess if there's no trust then sounds like the partial refund and having the knife is as far as the situation is going to go being resolved. I'm sorry to hear about this experience. I did email them with link to this thread last week hoping to see this worked out but I didn't get a response.

All but the last knife was from 5-12 years ago. So it has been along time since I ordered from him. I wasn’t sure if others had any issues and just wanted to give others a heads up.
If anything changes I will keep posted.
