I guess up here in tick country it is a must. I just gave my daughter a bath and found a lil tick above her leg in the pelvic area:mad:

She hasn't been out in the woods in awhile, so either it came off me, from playing in the back yard, or off my dog.

I never seen a deer tick, but have taken dozens of dogticks off me and my dog. This lil sob didn't look like a dog tick.

Pulling it off wasn't fun, it was in there pretty good. My daughter crying and squirming around didn't help. I broke the head off, so the doc is gonna have to take the rest out. He will probably give her some preventative meds just incase. He can't see me till 1:30 pm so I put this up in the mean time.

Here are some pics, with a dime for size refference. The last one is of the head broken off in my daughter's skin:mad:

Do any of you know if this is a deer tick or not?

Hate to say it, but I think it might be a deer tick. The size is about right for a deer tick and the coloration looks right. I may be mistaken though, its been a couple years since I took my parasitology/medical entomology class. A simple GIS found me this picture from the NIH, and I would say that it confirms my thoughts

Thanks cmdionne.

That sucks, really pisses me off that it got her and not me.

That my friend is a deer tick. We had a break out of those back east, and I know what they look like.
My grand father got bit by one and he had a reicurring sore for the last 5 years or more, nasty stuff.

Good on you for getting her to the Doc so fast, but I'm sure you know all about the importance of that given where you live.

I pulled one of the little ba$tards off my 2 year old daughter this summer, it was just a little seed tick, pissed me off just the same.

Hope all is well with your daughter.

Good job on getting her to the doc! Seems like emergency rooms aren't sure how to deal with this stuff, while a good family practicioner will take good care of her. Let us all know what the doc does about it so we can chime in with our own advice from our experience in the school of hard knocks (plus I think everyone on here with kids is curious to see what type of prophylactic treatment docs use on kids). The W&SS Forum bunch make for a great deer tick support group. Hope all goes well with her.

Just wanted to say, I hope everything comes out okay. Keep an eye on here for symptoms of Lymes.

Glad you did not hesitate to make a DR. appointment Bro, I hope everything goes well....let us know OK.... Smoke & Prayers Sent !!!

Yep. definitely looks like a deer tick. That sucks bigtime brother. I've seen a bunch of those. I used to live in Royston, GA and there were more of those bastards than people. A regular tick was a blessing back then. Luckily I never got bitten by a deer tick, just the big ballers, but friends of mine got hit by 'em. I'm sorry it happened to your little girl. Keep us up on how everything goes.

Its also important to note that just because it's a deer tick does not mean it was carrying lyme disease, and also I have seen a study that showed that removal of an infected tick within 36 hours resulted in transmission rates nearing 0%.

My 2 year old daughter hasn't picked one up yet, but I check her out pretty carefully when dressing her or at bath time. They have to feed for 24-36 hours before they can transmit the disease, I am told, so maybe you caught it early enough. Good move to go to the doctor just in case.

I had Lyme disease this summer and it sucked; I never saw the tick, but I knew what it was. Our stupid cat keeps bringing them into the house on his fur.

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Back from the Doc. Like stated above, he is positive it is a deer tick. He also assured me that since the tick was on here less than 4 hours there is a good chance she won't get lyme disease. However he prescribed her amoxicillim as a precaution; as that's what he would do if it was his child.

I am gonna take the tick to a state health agency for testing. It will take about 4-6 weeks to get results, but I am curious to know if the ticks in my immediate area carry lyme.

Don't know where you are in relation to any of the big universities in Conn., but it might be worth a shot to see if any of the parasitology specialists might be able to test it for you and perhaps even faster, just a thought I remember my parasitology professor got a few of these type of requests every month and he liked helping people out instead of just doing his research.

bummer tony... sorry to hear that man...:( we have so many ticks around here too.. i hate it... i have pulled a lot of ticks off of my wife over the years, as well as other folks... the misses works in prime tick territory.. well i guess anywhere outside around here, is prime territiory...

you should get yourself some good tick pullers... i have tried many different ones and these are the ones that i prefer... i have one of these in almost all of my kits and packs...

Definitely check your animals. And don't assume that you brought the tick in from the outdoors. It may be below freezing outside but these things have absolutely no problem surviving and thriving indoors, especially when there are both pets and people to feed on.

If there is only one, then it was just one lucky tick. If you find more, bug bomb your whole house now and use twice as many cans as they reccommend.

Good luck!

Ive never seen a tick before this spring. Me and my buddy went out fishing just for an hour or two. On the ride home I found one on my wrist, not clamped down. My buddy didnt even belive me when I said I had just killed one.

I went home and went to work about 3 hours later. I was sitting at my station when I felt something crawl on the back of my neck. When I brushed it with my hand it clamped down and bit me, but my reaction was to rip it off right away. She took a tiny piece of skin with her too. After my shift I went home and found three on my dog, all engorged with blood.

Then the phone rang and my buddy reported similar happenings. He said he found 4 on him as well. None had bitten him.

Its unreal, they must have been heavily concentrated in the area we were fishing that day. I never seen or even heard of one before then.

Out of the three I removed from my dog, I broke the head off all of them. Its really quite difficult.

this made me think, does anybody know how to remove a tick without ripping it's head off? this would be some very useful knowledge.

I am very close to West Conn. I will give that a try, thanks:thumbup::thumbup:

Good advice, I'll be on the lookout

I have taken the bigger dog ticks off my dog with out taring the tik in two, but the right removal device is important I think.

The tool Mike posted looks good.

The Doc didn't even bother taken the head out of my daughter. He said to keep it clean and her body will push it out on its own.
