Bugout Alternatives

Which "Bugout"? The plain jane S30V/G10 scales model or the upgraded M390 model with machined aluminum handles?

I agree. I think my ZT0450CF is similar in size/weight to my Bugouts but is nicer (my opinion). Along the same lines my Shiro Hation Zero is nicer still, but also much more expensive (again similar size/weight).
I just drooled over the Hation Zero. Seen it before but didn't know the name of it.

I absolutely LOVE the Shirogorov. Definately my favorite brand. I don't think I can justify the price tag. I also love the Malibu's (even though I can't find them). I wondered if the Demko was too big. It looks very utilitarian.
Also, is Pro-tech a premium brand? I don't know much about them.

SK
Pro-Tech is a smaller company, mainly known for autos -- but they do button locks extremely well, and when they put them on a manual-action knife it's a joy. (I'm sure their autos are great, too, but those are illegal here so I've never owned one.) Fit and finish is impeccable, well worth the price IMO. The Malibu sells out constantly for good reason. :)

They are just so smooth looking. Damnit. So many great knives. Now I just need to start making money to buy them all.

Asher Knives Nomad 3.0 just dropped - M390 and G10. Per Instagram more in both colors should be available this week.

Wow their knives are crazy affordable.
Edit: Have you owned anything from them yet?

What I'd probably do if I were in your shoes is mod out your current bugout. There's a lot you can do with them. You can get scales in g10, micarta, carbon fiber, ti, aluminum, copper, brass..., you can get Ti backspacers, you could even get it rebladed if you really wanted to. Transparent Knives does custom reblades with really good cutting geometry and awesome heat treatment from what I hear.

I guess I didn't know there was so much aftermarket support for these

This seems to be the way to do it. There really isn't anything else quite like the Bugout, but nobody likes the squishy slabs.

Yessir. You, my friend, have probably the single most upgradeable folder on the market right now. It's a hell of a platform to do some customizing. You can make it one of a kind if you wanted.

One cool way to make it different from everyone else's is to get some Flytanium scales in whatever flavor you like and then mod those scales yourself. Their scales are the most affordable on the market as far as I'm aware. You can get some diamond or regular files and carve up some some of their scales however you want. You could use a dremel too I'm sure, I've been meaning to try some modding with the Dremel I forgot I had, ya just have to do a bit of practicing on some scrap materials first.

I agree with the people that are saying that if you want an alternative to the Bugout, Benchmade already has one for you ready to roll. Those small ZTs look good, but having the original Bugout well under two ounces, have a tiny blade, and still fit larger hands is lightning in a bottle.

As always it depends on the features you’re looking to upgrade, the materials you want, and your overalls budget.

You mention the Deka, have you tried one yet? I’ve owned both and honestly the Deka was an exceptionally better knife, with better materials, at a cheaper price. Fairly easy to snag one at around $100 on the secondary in LNIB condition. If you love the bugout but just want different scales, you can upgrade those with dozens of different aftermarket options.

For an alternate framelock option, look at the quiet carry drift.

Quiet Carry intrigues me. I love their designs. Very sleek. Very solid looking.

Yea I really like the Drift lately. (I don't own one yet but I like it a lot). Also, in case you didn't know, the blade is made of Vanax which is extremely corrosion resistant compared to most steels, the hardware is all titanium, and the lockbar insert is LC200N (which is the other big daddy in corrosion resistant steels).

Sheesh. Just looked that one up again. Slim. Great shape. Thumb stud. Nice steel. Solid construction. Another one to consider.

I think for the time being I want to get some second hand knives - maybe the deka, slim zt, a nuetron if I can find one. There are so many that I would love to have.

The Elementum is under 3oz. and a little more comapct than the Bugout. BladeHQ has a special edition Elementum in S35VN for around $80. Besides the better steel, it's also a tiny bit thinner and has a slightly thinner blade. Right now, they only have the jade/natural G-10 version in stock, but you could always throw some Flytanium scales on that. Of course, there is also the titanium frame-lock version with 20CV in the WE line.

It might also be worth looking at the Gemini. Kizer makes a bunch of different variations. I have a Micarta liner-lock version in N690 and a titanium frame-lock version in S35VN. Both are fantastic.

If you want the same type of lock, consider those recommendations for the Hogue Deka. I tend to agree with RousingRabbles RousingRabbles 's assessment that it's "an exceptionally better knife".

This is how it starts. One innocent question and now you want them all! Haha good luck
