Bushcraft Knife challenge - Interest?

Hey Guys,
Great idea for an evaluation of at least my favorite genre of knife. Might I suggest some type of matrix so the eval can be somewhat standard. Bushcraft chores are a good place to start. I use the following:

1. Cord Cutting- various types of cord and string (push cuts)
2. One Stick Fire Making- batoning and feather stick making, striking the spine on a ferro rod.
3. Figure Four Trap Carving
4. Spoon Carving
5. Carving a bow drill set
Of course edge retention and ease of sharpening must be rated also.

You then come up with a scale of 1-10 and rate the overall performance of each chore.
I'm sure a lengthy dissertation is warranted as well.
Just a suggestion to help the cause. Good Luck.

All great ideas, and LT, and I will make sure they get on the list. What are the odds of you making it up as 1 of the testers. We can do a weekend campout.

The list looks good- but I feel that there should be some food prep involved as well. Fish, potato hash breakfast with veggies, some butchering perhaps- everybody seems to eat in the bush. What about vegetation procurement- cattails, tubers... I'm not sure what is on your locations menu. I find that I scrape with my knives a fair bit with woodwork, so I think that should be played with as well.

I'm okay with any criteria, and look forward to making something to compete with.

G'day Rick

....... Makers just need to know this will be used for any task one might be required to do while in the wilderness......

.....Give the makers some freedom as see what they come up with.

Rick

I couldn't agree more :thumbup::thumbup:

This approach not only gives me a look at the knife that's designed, but it will also give me an insight into the makers' ideas about Bushcraft

Kind regards
Mick

I'm conditionally in. I like the idea of Tony's clan doing the reviews. Up front and honest: I'll be selling my entry at contest end. If that's not cool, then I'll have to pass.

I agree with Koyote on this one. It should be who steps up, not who they want, necessarily. They may vote for people they think would favor them :p

Bushcraft is indeed a 'large' name in nature of tasks. Although there must be a general idea of what all of them should be able to do.

Since you are instrumental in getting this thread started, you should be involved in the testing and reviewing as well.

So.... (insert Good, Bad, Ugly music) ...Now the apprentice must challenge the teacher.

I have a hard time coming into these challenges with anything other than the idea of a new knife design. One reason I like the freeform approach- as much as I like my leuku pattern bushie, my goal is to design something new (to me).

I agree thegame should have a hand in things here. He's a bit far from the CT crowd, but I'm sure we can work something out.

If I was going to suggest a path on that, I'd suggest the knives get mailed to him for some in house kitchen testing (I hear he's got some cooks around), some messing around, and some photos, then off to the wilds of Connecticut for the crewe parade.

That gives a slight problem with "sharpness out of the box" in Ct, but also gives a chance for big mike to evaluate sharpening performance on all of them. :D

Hey fellas, I am opening a new thread here with the tasks list and how I think the contest should go. Nothing is set in stone, so if yall want to change anything, let's discuss it here in this thread and I will make any change needed there. If the makers are cool with everything in that thread; post an "I'm in" there and I will add you to the contestant list.

If you guys don't like a task, or think another should be added, lets talk about it here.

Here is the a link to the thread

I am more than cool with The Game getting the knives first. Lets see what he thinks.

Aww, how sweet :D

As Koyote pointed out, my family does like to cook, but mostly my sister. However, he also knows, she is due to have a baby at the end of October, and I am usually the one who helps her with her kids, and herself. (Kids, plural, as in 7)

It depends on the time of when they would be sent whether I could help or not. If I have the time available, I will be able to have my sister, and mother use them around the kitchen. All depends on what happens with my sister, though. (And work, and hunting - if we just got a deer, could be a great time to try them out on one ;) )

I think cooking, peeling slicing is one of the things I do with my outdoor knives more than anything.

 I'm with you. Food prep is already on the task list. Peeling will be part of it.

This sound's like it's going to be fun. Is the review process going to be done by just tonym,or can others get involved? If so I would like to be involved I have 100 acres to play and hunt on,and it would be grate to put some of yall's knives through there paces. If not I completely understand so let me know thanks.

Hi quick kill, The only reason I was chosen is because I live very close to a several long time BFF WSS members who all actively contribute here. I intend to have these members all join me in testing these knives. The makers all know us, and trust us as most of them have done business with us in the past. There are a ton of more qualified people on here, but like my grandpa use to say; "The sun has got to shine on a dogs ass every once in awhile"
:)
