Bushcraft Knife challenge - Interest?

Straight spine......Chuckling - I new that would make Rick sweat :D

Hey Guys,
1. Cord Cutting- various types of cord and string (push cuts)
2. One Stick Fire Making- batoning and feather stick making, striking the spine on a ferro rod.
3. Figure Four Trap Carving
4. Spoon Carving
5. Carving a bow drill set

Good list.

-Small game skinning/processing (I'm thinking maybe rabbits as they can be bought, but its a pain for Tony)

-Spoon carving is a pretty big task for somebody having to do 10-15 knives, maybe doing a simplifed tri-stick with a selected set of notches (e.g. X-cut, 2 notches in different direction to one another, sharpened point). This can also replace the figure 4. Fig. 4 is a good one, but Tony will spend more time setting the trigger of each trap than he will carving it....

-I'd like to see both a soft wood and hard wood comparison test - simple thing again like making sharpened points on 1.5" diameter sticks - pine or cedar and oak or maple

-Evaluation of different grip combos....Tony does that cutting thing where he looks like he's doing the chicken dance....I want to see that on video (and in fast motion....with BennyHill music overlaid....maybe an old guy running around after scanty clad women in the background too)

-I'd like to see a standard hole drilling test....Maybe a 1" piece of standard lumber. Drill a hole through the wood with the tip of the knife.

-Baton splitting a small piece - need I say it? Part of the bowdrill kit making test

-Prolonged cutting use. This will be a PITA, but I personally find that you don't really get to know a knife's ergos until you spent at least 15 minutes straight cutting with it in hard, hammer grip type strokes. So take a 3" piece of ash and whittle that sucker down to nothing. Obviously, you can only do about one of these a day, but it would give insights into handle comfort.

-Quick carving test with gloves. Just to see if its doable and controlled.

I'd like to see the knives truncate a branch leaving a flush end. This is quite hard on the blades and will test the heat treat and grind.
I've truncated through tough Ocean Spray (Holodiscus discolor)with my ML Kephart with no ill effect so with good heat treat they should manage the task ok !

I think it is awesome. Will be nice to see some new faces around here. I'd never heard of Bruce before the first one, and I was hoping there would be a few more makers showing up here. Who knows, maybe someone will beat Rick  :D

That's because I didn't exist before the Camp Knife Challenge.....since then people around town try to buy me coffee or lunch when we meet on the streets, strangers approach me to sign autographs, beautiful women that I've never met before ask me if I'm single......the Camp Knife Challenge changed my life!

Thank-you W&SS!!!

This looks like fun and thanks guys for letting me know this was going on.
I'm in over my head but I'm in.

Well.. umm... can I have your autograph too? Or.. I guess the knife is good enough ;)

Glad to hear it! I love your work

I was thinking rabbit as well, It may not be that much of a pain. There is only so much rabbit I will eat though, so the other guys better like rabbit.

The spoons carved won't be pretty, but it is a great long term use test. It also test the knife tip, as I dig wood out for the bowl. We can probably get 4-6 knives done a day.

Fig. 4 is a good one, but Tony will spend more time setting the trigger of each trap than he will carving it.... LMAO:D

-I'd like to see both a soft wood and hard wood comparison test - simple thing again like making sharpened points on 1.5" diameter sticks - pine or cedar and oak or maple
I like that, I will add it on

You just totally renamed the chest leaver grip to the chicken dance grip!! awesome

-I'd like to see a standard hole drilling test....Maybe a 1" piece of standard lumber. Drill a hole through the wood with the tip of the knife.

Is drilling the socket out for a hand hold on the bow drill not enough?

-Baton splitting a small piece - need I say it? Part of the bowdrill kit making test
I figured the 1 stick fire and bow drill will have plenty of battoning.

-Prolonged cutting use. This will be a PITA, but I personally find that you don't really get to know a knife's ergos until you spent at least 15 minutes straight cutting with it in hard, hammer grip type strokes. sounds good:thumbup:

sorry Tony,
I commented in the other thread!! Please ask Mod to delete buddy.

That will be part of the shelter material procurement brother:thumbup:

I always do that as well when I get a new knife.

A whole list of badass makers throwin down.

I love these things.

It looks like the skills are right on for what a bushcrafter would do.

Thanks Tony and TheGame, and all the makers puttin it down for the test. :)

No need to thank me.(but thanks :D ) Although I would have to give a big thanks to the knife makers on this one.

We are all the winners, here. Getting to see all of the knives being tested. Going to be awesome

Hell yes:thumbup::thumbup:

Thank you bro for the idea and for giving me the nod.

I am mighty anxious to get my paws on these knives. I have had the privelage of owning and using alot of the participating knife makers' work before, so I know the lucky testers and myself are in for a treat of a lifetime!!!

Excuses? My sister is pregnant, I help her take care of her kids, and her? How is that an excuse?

If I am busy with watching kids after work (if there is any) Then I really can't. I rather they be getting tested while I am doing that. Besides that, November 20-21 I am taking my nephew on his second youth gun hunt. Then I leave the Friday after Thanksgiving until December 5th for Gun season. Then again in two weeks. Then it is Xmas time.

So, no excuses, all valid reasons here. As I said though, if I get a deer before that via bow, I would be glad to test them out butchering em up ;)

I just figured that a guy with 4,400 posts in two years might have a little extra time on his hands.:D

If you don't want to do it thought, it's alright. The thread is a great idea to see some new knives.

Yeah I read the Camp Knife Challenge at least 5 or 6 times. I even ended up buying my favorite knife in that one.

Woulda been perfect if it happened about 3 weeks ago ;) (Canning, lots of tomatoes and peppers and cukes were cut up)

But if I get a deer around then, I would love to see how they can handle the meat

As far as the extra time - winter is the time I lack that. My favorite time of the year

I think the knives should be completely made by each maker... heat treat and all. A knife is only as good as it's heat treat. For me that's the heart of blademaking

Unless we make another category for folks who farm out production steps.

I agree, Rick.
