Bushcraft Knife challenge - Interest?

You had me at "arrogant", Yote....

Your reasoning puts it all into perspective... jeez, I'm a push-over...

Thanks.

Oh boy, I really would like to see this knifemaker challege happen. However I am not a knifemaker and it is not up to me to draw any lines, however I do feel like some lines do need to be drawn.
IMO, knife kits or blanks should not be permitted in this. The knife should be completely made in house by the maker. From grounding to shaping and finishing the handles. I doubt most of the makers are harvesting their own wood, making their own micarta, pins, liners, bolsters and so on, however I don't have a problem with outsourcing heat treat. Dan was in on the last challenge and this topic never came up, so to be fair can we agree that outsourcing heat treat will be permitted. However, the makers need to disclose this and we will take a 1 point deduction from the overall score of those who outsourced heat treat.

How does that sound?

I couldn't agree more!

G'day VL

.....It would be great to have Mick(Southern Cross) do some testing as well, since I enjoy his posts so much. But I don't think it would be feasible time wise would it? Maybe it would be worth it?

I really appreciate the thought, but Tony & his crew really are the best choice for this test.

Apart from the additional cost & time of shipping the knives O'seas, I would have to be the worlds slowest knife reviewer.

The opinions I express in a review are formed from using the knife in a range of tasks over a 6 month period

One further point is the problem I would have locally in returning the knives.

I have a real PITA local post office who refuses to allow knives to be sent to the US without prior written approval from the US Consul stating that the knife is not a prohibited import into the US :jerkit:

Kind regards
Mick

Tony I disagree with point deduction for outsourced HTing. Believe me anybody and I mean anybody with heat treat data in hand and the right equipment can heat treat steel. It does takes some practice and a bit of experience but it's not that difficult to learn. One reason why alot of guys outsource the heat treat is because HTing kilns are fricken expensive. I dropped 1,000 bucks on mine. Differentially HTed blades or clay hardened blades are a different story. That takes a bit of practice and experience especially done with a torch set up.
Dan does large amounts of blades in his different runs so outsourced HTing is the most time saving and cost effective way for him.
I personally prefer full control over all aspects of my work so I don't outsource anything except occasionally waterjet cutting.
My personal opinon, the more hands in the pot, the more problems that could arise when it comes to knifemaking.

Points. Whatever. Lets make some knives. I think Tony and them ought to get sponsored by a local brewery. I might make the drive for a night of knives and good keg beer.

I also feel that there should be no points deducted for HT send out. The maker just needs to state that it was sent out.

No kits.

Water jet profiling is just that, profiling. The maker has already designed the blade and sent the specs for that work. No big deal. The cream is in the grinding.

Let's chat about the "ease of sharpening"....

There is always a steady supply of New Castle on hand at Tony's place! However, if you come by, I will grab some Sammy Smith to celebrate:thumbup:

I will remove the point deduction, but as customer and would be customer of all you crazy edged tools, I mean edged tool makers, I would still like to know who is out sourcing and who isn't.

First off. I am glad to see you joined the party David:thumbup:

We wil have 4 different testers, all of which use what ever technique and tools they are more comfortable with to field sharpen the knives.

Before any of us use any knife we will all get to see initial sharpness and evaluate that during the fit and finish part.

Then each of us will start with a different knife on the tasks. When we are done with every task for that knife, we will do everything we can to bring that knife back to the screaming edges that they came with. We will rate the knife on how easy it was to get the edge sharp again. I know steel and grind will have alot to do with it, but hey, it is what it is. Thats why there are 4 of us, I doubt no two guys are going to reach the same conclusion on any given knife, so it will all come out in the wash.

Thats about the best control I can think of, but I am very open to suggestions.

that got it. convex edges require a little different "care" than straight edges.

Don't get me wrong guys...I love heat-treating my own blades. No waiting for the mail....no bills....Instant gratification!! :D

I'm in regardless...just might have to change steels depending on the rules. I'll do the best I can whatever the parameters.

There's even more to this discussion...like the use of shop-monkeys (sadly I have none).

I really appreciate the testers being willing to part with their time and share their talents with us.

Will any of the guys have diamond hones? If not, can I send one with my stuff?

Dan

Oops..forgot to ask:

Is it settled on if it is a new design? Or if an existing one is ok?

I'm good either way. Just need to know sooner than later.

Dan

I think design should be open. I treat challenges as a ... well, challenge to myself to work up a new design, though this one may end up looking like something I already do once I'm done thinking it all through!

But I don't see why, if anyone has a design in mind, they shouldn't do it. I say all this and it's even odds that it will end up being something so close to a leuku bushie as to make no difference!

Personally, I don't give a damn who makes what. If people want to outsource HT, get their blanks waterjetted or lasercut, hell even if they want to build a kit knife and submit it, makes no difference to me what so ever. It won't make my knife perform any different.

Well stated my friend,

...well stated indeed. :) :) :)
