Bushcraft Knife challenge - Interest?

Thanks for the consideration guys. I'll post in the other thread that I'm in. As far as ease of sharpening....with ATS-34.....I hope you guys have a belt grinder in the testing area.:D

Dylan has it right... Lets just get knives in this contest.

I didn't catch the point deduction for outsourcing... thats gotta go, man.

As for sharpening... the only true test of the original edge is to let it ride. All the other contests didn't allow for sharpening, however, that is a reality as a knife owner... so I guess we'll have to go with it. I'd prefer that there was no sharpening involved until the very end.

I sort of agree and sort of don't.

With 4 people giving a full run on each knife, it makes sense to hone it up in between. How the blade handles sharpening is a big deal, too.

But I also see that a 4 person stress test could be fun, too.

I lean towards the sharpening between users on this one, just because I think it's fair for the next guy in line using the blade

Ease of sharpening is a big factor for me when choosing a knife, so I would like that to be included in the test. I want to see what the knife will perform like for the end user, and that includes sharpening both at home and in the field for me.

Here is my thanks to all the members and knifemakers who make these forums interresting and fun foe everone else . Bladeforum is awesome .

this sounds amazing !!!... a question to the makers who are entering are this knives you will be entering be knives you made before/ one of your "production" knives or will they be all new designs ? ive read the entire thread and didnt see any posts saying it had to be a new design or not if it was i didnt catch it. also say the knives catches peoples eye will that design be offered for sale down the line ? i know andy aka fiddleback forge wants to sale his after its all said and done . thanks for your time

Speaking not as a knifemaker but as a buyer and user: At first I felt that sole authorship should be a requirement, but I have changed my mind. This competition should reflect what I would receive if I were to purchase a knife from one of the makers in the competition. So the primary constraint that I would like to see is that the knives are made the same way as what is typically sold by the maker.

G'day Tony

First off. I am glad to see you joined the party David:thumbup:

We wil have 4 different testers, all of which use what ever technique and tools they are more comfortable with to field sharpen the knives.

Before any of us use any knife we will all get to see initial sharpness and evaluate that during the fit and finish part.

Then each of us will start with a different knife on the tasks. When we are done with every task for that knife, we will do everything we can to bring that knife back to the screaming edges that they came with. We will rate the knife on how easy it was to get the edge sharp again. I know steel and grind will have alot to do with it, but hey, it is what it is. Thats why there are 4 of us, I doubt no two guys are going to reach the same conclusion on any given knife, so it will all come out in the wash.

Thats about the best control I can think of, but I am very open to suggestions.

A very good example of why you & your crew are the best choice for this project

Kind regards
Mick

Now we are trully talking about edge retention :thumbup:

Maybe the "extended use" test can be left till the end to really evaluate the duration of each knives "working edge" :D

Kind regards
Mick

I think each knife should have edge retention tested by shaving the butt hair off of a fatass Chicago Bears fan.

Really, this is getting complicated. I trust Tony and them. Nothing is going to be perfect. When are the knives due?

Tony is definitely the man for the job.

Well thanks for the confidence fellas, I hope we can live up to it.

Andy, I put a tentative date of Nov 20th down, but if you guys want to do it faster, or need more time let me know.

frc505 The makers may enter any one knife with a blade that does not exceed 5". The maker can choose a knife that is alraedy in their line up or they can make a new design. That is totally up to each individual maker.

I think we got carried away with rules on this one and I don't think anyone wanted that. This is mostly about fun and learning. Making it a challenge or a contest makes it interesting but there really won't be any loosers. However, the biggest winners will be us testers, followed by the forum members who follow this competition, and then finally the knife makers who will get alot of feed back on their work.

I'm doing a new version of an existing design for the contest. It's going to be the Bush Operator XL. After the contest, it is going to be a regular addition to the lineup. Really it's one of two "new" designs that were going to be added to the lineup anyways, so this is a good debut for it.
