Bushcraft STYLE Knife Passaround

I have had the pleasure of hosting a few passarounds for some great knife makers. I once again have the honor of hosting another. Many of you may remember me posting about a Bushcraft knife buy Landar 15 (Walter Davis) I was first introduced to his knives by Marcelo Cantu awhile back. Marcelo and I being neighbors have had the opportunity to check out each of our collections. He has some impressive steel from some really well known makers. So when he showed me the Landar and kept talking about how well it cut and held an edge I just had to see for myself. As soon as I got home I grabbed one he had on the exchange relatively cheap. Since I handled Marcelo’s knives,(he has 3 of them) I wasn’t surprised at how comfortable the handles were. What did surprise me was how easily it passed through wood. I mean it was just a magnificent cutter. Since then that knife made its way into a few other hands and I haven’t heard a bad thing about it yet.

Walter Davis has been a knife nut since he got his first SAK at 8 years old. Since then he has been building his collection and using his knives like the rest of us. About 5 years ago he started to pick up some better quality production knives as well as some handcrafted knives. After getting a few handmade pieces he convinced himself that he could make knives as well. It was a ruff start at first, but he kept at it. He didn’t call himself a knife maker till about 3 years ago, now at 30 years old Walter; in my opinion makes a helluva knife.

Walter came to me with this pass around idea in hopes to get honest reviews and critiques on his knives. He would like your opinion on what works and what doesn’t. So the goal here is to give feedback. He wants the "attaboys" as well as the “I would change this or that”. With out honest feedback he will continue making great cutters and may even improve his pieces, but with your feedback he hopes to better his craft and make knives that all of us will be proud to carry, use, and display.

.

Each participant will be shipped 2 knives! Both are his Bushcraft style with slight differences.
Here are the specs of each knife.

Together

So here’s the deal. I have chosen 5 guys already to participate. I have combed the threads overtime for guys that tell it how it is. I have seen pics of their collections and they are mighty impressive; so I know they have handled some outstanding steel. I could of found enough participants to fill up a few dozen passarounds, but I am leaving 5 spots open on the first come first serve bases.

Now for the rules.

1. I am going to keep this state side, I am sorry to all that live in Canada, but customs is too much of a headache. I still love yall though.
2. You must be a member here for at least 6 months and be somewhat of a regular here at WSS.
3. You will use the knife, not abuse it.
4. Take pics! At least 3 please
5. Give a detailed review. What did you like, what didn’t you like, and WHY. What would you change etc….
Your review and pics should be up very soon after you ship the knife on.
6. Time limit. Try to pass this along within a few days. We however want you to use the knife, so if it takes a bit longer that is fine. Try to keep it with in a week though
7. You must sharpen it after use. Do not reprofile the edge! Just get it back to how you received it. Please wipe it clean also, with mineral oil or equivalent. They are high carbon you know....
7. Shipping must be USPS priority. There are 2 knives so please insure for $150.00
8. Email me the tracking info when it is shipped.

Most of all. Have fun and be safe.

I am not going to use these till the end. So the first person will get the knives as new from maker. I will post the final order when it is full. To get things started, I am shipping the knives off tomorrow to Talfuchre!

Post "I want in and agree to all the rules" or you don't get in.

1. Talfuchre
2. WadeH
3. Tknife
4. Udtjim
5. Barberfobic1992
6. Spooky Pistolero
7. Hollowdweller
8. Sharpeye
9. PB Wilson
10. Siguy

I will probably change shipping order by geography when the list is full.

sniff sniff...but I understand. Let the waiting game commence! lol

Or maybe I can check them out as they make their way into or out of CT.

Dan when they come back, we'll see what we can do. Thanks for understanding.

I have another of the smaller version that I own. So if you want to get out anf hike one day let me know, I'll have ger on my hip:thumbup:

Mike, when Jake makes it out to you, you can play with his version:thumbup:

Thanks for including me on this Tony. I kept going back to the ones he had for sale, they were really tempting, so handling them will probabaly push me over the edge!

The “Landar” knives I’ve handled (Tony’s and Marcelo’s) have been very impressive.

I like the fact that these two knives have different grinds, it will really let the participants get a feel for Walter’s work.

I won’t bogie a spot on the list, but I’m hoping Tony will let me check them out once he gets them back.

WadeH your in!

Please email me your addy and a contact phone number.

at amontero@sleepetc.com

Will all participants email their address and contact phone numbers.

Thank you

You know it Mike!

I'm glad to see people are interested in these! I hope everyone's pleased with them, I know I am:p I'm especially happy with the larger one. Being a fan of big knives, the larger one seems to fit better in my hand, but I do have pretty big paw;). I appreciate the chance to get everyone's input on these two, especially on the different grinds. I brought these both to a pretty fine edge, not quite razors but they're not tank killers by any means:D
That doesn't mean I want you to hold back on them, though! I think you'll be pretty happy with their performance in just about every situation short of digging holes in concrete:D

Along with a BIG Thank-You to Tony for running this passaround, as well as sending out the first one that he bought from me so others could check it out, at the end of the passaround the Black& Red handled knife is his to keep:thumbup: I can't say it enough, but taking time out of your schedule to do this means a great deal to me!

Also, I'll have a drawing for the Natural Micarta knife at the end of the passaround, based on the order of your review of these knives. I'll use a random number generator on the web to pick a number between 1-10, and I'll make sure the knife makes it's way back to you to keep:cool:

I really do appreciate everyone taking time out of their days to play with and review these for me:thumbup: I look forward to hearing what everyone's opinion of these is, and feel free to contact me here or through email/pm if you have any questions about either of these. I do try to think through every part of the knives I make and am more than happy to explain why I've done something a certain way. And if there's something you think I can improve on these, well, that's why I'm doing this passaround:cool: I'll take all the input I can get, be it compliments or criticisms:D:o

Thanks,

Walter Davis

Jake

I was worried about people feeling that way:o

But that is not the case! I only chose 5 guys, most of which all have a different oppinion on knives than I do.

I mean, Spooky liike Mora's for goodness sakes;):D

i am slightly confused. so, you picked an initial 5 to start with, then are accepting 5 in addition to that?

assuming that is the case and you are still accepting applicants, i would like to be in and i am in agreement with all of the rules.
