Bushcraft STYLE Knife Passaround

. Pop the big one out of the sheath and bingo, Rust spots! Marcelo and I seam to think there is something in the sheath that is reacting with the metal. Is there any chance that is possible? By the way, the original knife I had was not in Walt's leather sheath...

Either way, like you I was shocked at how well the knife cut and even more so on its edge holding capability.

Again T.F. thanks for taking part in this passaround, you did a great job!

Tony,

This makes TOTAL sense - the rust spots were where the welt contacted the blade. Because Walt made a oversized welt - any moisture would have contacted the blade at this point and simply sat there for the 5 days it was on its way to me.

This will rust many blades. And it makes me feel better - I will amend my review.

The Type of Leather might be the issue here.

Not all tanning processes are the same, some can leave compounds in the finished leather that can cause rusting.

I believe that Vegetable Tanned Leather is preferred for sheaths, maybe one of the sheath makers here can give us the scoop.

PS – Great review TF.

Mike, I was just thinking this myself. When I first ordered leather a couple of years ago I was careful to pick out veg-tanned leather, and have bought the same stuff ever since. However, the stuff I buy is no longer identifed as being vegetable tanned, so I will look into it.

I would bet that there's still a bit of moisture in the sheath that's caused the problem, as I do have a couple of knives that have been stored in the same leather for long periods that are without rust on the blade. But I will double check on the leather this week, just to be sure. And I'll start working out a way to make sure my sheaths are completely dry before they go out.

Walt and Tony - The Small Knive review is done (back one page). Please send me the next address.

I want to thank you both for your time and care in this passaround. I feel honored to go first and get some knives I would have never been exposed to were it not for this passaround.

Thanks again TF! I'm glad she held up as well as the larger one:D I did put in an order for the two of Stohlman's leatherworking books you recommended last night;) Looks like there's a couple more in the 'Making Leather Cases' series I'll need to check out here shortly, also.

I do appreciate the review a bunch:thumbup:

Another great review T.F.

Check your pm box for the addy, I resent it.

Also thank you for getting your review done so quickly, the people next inline are sure to appreciate that!

Dang Tal! Leave something for the rest of us to review!:grumpy:

Why do you have to be so thorough and detailed in your reviews? Even your photos kick major arse! You're making us all look bad.

I can imagine my review after giving these knives the once over:

"Um, what Tal said."

;):D

I did PB! No food prep... and I left it to other to stick in F-150 hoods or shoot them!

Besides - I cut 550 cord with it - but I didn't review it.

I thought I left a LOT! ;)

TF

Tal, you've really ruined us all with your stupid sexy light box and in depth observations. ;) Nice pics though, really. Good writeup.

Well Tony - When she left my house - it was SERIOUSLY polished and hand a NICE Convex edge on it.

I dissected two gnat farts before I packed it up... it is THAT sharp!

TF

I want in and agree to all the rules!

Don't leave me out just because I was working on a stupid family process paper!

Talfuchre - that was very thorough and great review! I think you've set a new benchmark with these two.

If you don't mind though, I'm going to keep this sentence for future reference. It gets me all frisky for some reason :D

– the butt swell is large enough to be comfortable without being bulky – for my hands it fit perfectly.

Wow TF you are really going to make the rest of us work to find something to add to your great reviews.:D

Hey guys, don't get all worried about outdoing T.F.'s review or doing something different. Use the knife how you feel it should be used! T.F. gave his oppinion on how it handled, so yours may vary. His review was great and well thought out, but it doesn't make it right or wrong. The idea is to post your thoughts on this knife. What you like, and what you don't like.

This way, Walter can put it all together and change what he feels we want!

Tony‘s got it right…

…just because TF did a great review and liked the knives doesn’t mean they will work the same for you.

Keep an open mind, and think about how you use a knife…

…let your experience guide your review of any tool.
