Busse as a carry weapon?

While I have not used this tactic myself in a real encounter, I have turned around to a large breed dog which was within striking distance if they chose. In a situation like this you WILL NOT likely have time to pull your pepper spray and would be stuck using open handed defense.

I would agree that pepper spray is the best defense against four legged critters like canines AT A DISTANCE, but you may not have time to employ it. While the "ninja move" I described may or may not be your best move, it may be your ONLY MOVE depending on how the scenario is unfolding. Like defending against knife attacks, you will likely have some sort of wound after employing this tactic but you will hopefully leave with your life. I'll just have to use my Boss Jack to pry their jaws apart after I've delivered a lethal move.....;)

Zombie thread, but honestly you're out of your mind if you expect this to work against a large determined dog. I have been jumped on by a rott while protecting my dog, and am lucky to only have scars on my chest from it. The only thing that stopped it was the chokehold I applied and held till the b@st@rd stopped moving. I did not kill him, but he did not come after me or my dog again when he got up. My knife, an emerson with a wave at the time, I did not even consider. Pepper spray would not have done anything other than get on me and my dog too. If I was more alert, I would have noticed the loose 120lb+ dog while I was walking mine, but I didn't. Fortunately, when he attacked my dog, we were able to defend ourselves without killing him. Just think about a wolf, take it down by ten percent lethality, and you have a aggressive large breed. People are soft compared to that.

After owning over 20+ models, it is my favorite "fighter."

In the scenario above - being attacked by a pit bull - your best move would be to simply grab the front paws and rip outwards like you're breaking a wishbone. This was taught to me by a fellow who raised wolves, this move should instantly kill and or incapacitate ANY canine you may encounter. If I remember correctly, it only takes about 8 pounds of force to break this structure so most anybody can use this with outstanding results. In most cases, dogs will jump at you to go for your arms OR throat which would be the most opportune moment to employ such defense. The most important thing however, is to see the attack coming and remaining calm so you can be relaxed enough to make the right action.

Please do not try this! I have a decent amount of experience with military K9's and I can tell you with a great deal of certainty that you would not survive attempting a move like that against a motivated attack dog.

We call our dogs "Chainsaws on legs". K9's are well equipped to inflict devastating damage with a quickness. My best advice would be to try and grab a hold and take away their air by the quickest means you have available.

For a smaller conceal , I go with my BAe and either a mashed cat conceal kydex or a rainwalker, for a bigger I hang my ffbm upside down under my shoulder :)

I had 2 dogs attack me and my dog at the same time..luckily my dog is large and can hold his own..but the 2 dogs that came at us were being walked across the street by an older woman who cclearly couldn't handle them so she just dropped the leashes and they charged us..I didn't go for my knife I grabbed their collars and put them in a certain hold that they can't bite me in..its hard to describe the hold. But you grab the collar and use it as leverage..force your elbow into their back end which forces them into the sitting position and then good yank into they laying position.

I was attacked by what I later found out was a 96lb American put bull, you either react or you don't (fight or flight) I did exactly what u did, only problem this dog dosent get tired , I held him for about 20 minutes on the floor one hand on collar, elbow in his back, both my legs pinning him as well, while I'm sad to say I tried to choke him unconscious with my other hand, needless to say, it didnt work, finally his owner came looking for him and saw what as going on, as I remained holding him his owner grabbed him secure, I let off him and turned tail and ran my ass off, this crazy ass dog broke free from it owner and was chewing on the door knob at the front of my house, he wanted me bad, about 6 months later he got loose again grabbed some poor girl by the hand and gave her something like 40 stitches, they had him put down after that, but it's deffinatly a scary situation.

If there were two I'd have been massacred , and imagine, what if they didnt have collars, what then ?

Argonne Assault. The thing is just made for breaking skulls and poking holes.

Kinda surprising how few people point this one out. It's one of only a couple of Busse's that is based on a knife purpose built for killing stuff.

I don't think of a knife so much as a primary weapon, but as an adjunct, or back up weapon. I do a lot of urban hiking when I am at my Miami place. Often, I have to cross through part of a bad area, to get to where I want to go. Like Wynwood, or down town Miami, along the River.
My 'kit' for those hikes includes my Springfield XDS, extra mags, and my little Busse Anniversary Mean Street. A button up shirt, worn over a tee shirt, covers all.

The HG55 is the only Busse I would carry on my gear as a combat backup weapon. The Argonne Assault is a great idea, but Busse blew it by making the blade way too long to be effective as a knuckle knife. The AA would have been better engineered along the lines of the original MK I 1918 trench knife; with a 6” double edged dagger blade. I still have the MK I my Grandfather came back from WWI with, it would have been a very formidable weapon in the trenches. I was tempted to carry it while I was on active duty, but didn’t want to lose it or have it stolen.

....
I have heard the exact opposite from a number of reliable sources.
Dogs have extremely sensitive smelling apparatuses. That's why most postal office walkers and walking meter checkers ALWAYS carry pepper spray with them.

I with the boss jack on occasion... but mostly I'm with my spyderco sage 2. I love the boss jack, it's a perfect in the middle blade. Busse, scrapyard and the swamp have some really nice edc blades available right now... I guess that means I can use another one :D yes I'm addicted :o.

Dear Leviathan,

Are you asking about something for concealed carry, or simply an open carry/field use knife?

Historically, it has been proven that nearly any sized knife/weapon can be concealed. A person's training dictates the preference I guess.

If it is for open convenient carry knife, BUSSE covers it completely.

Depending on how you are going to carry your knife, its length may be a deciding factor. If one chooses the standard strong side hip carry, a blade loner than about 6 inches will drag when one sits down. This can be carried if your sheath has a slight cant, and then the length question goes out the window.

Whatever you choose, you won't be wrong.

My buddy used to own two chow chow brothers, they would often fight for dominance, it was all out. Extremely difficult to separate them when they fought. He one time sprayed them in nose and face with his pepper spray and it had no affect. They stayed locked together. He fired a 1911 near them after that to see If the sound would get them to release their lock on bite but no affect. Basically they exhausted themselves up to a point and would stop fighting. So I'm pretty leery if having too much faith in pepper spray. A taser maybe more effective.

Had pit bull appear out of an orange grove in middle of night walking my dogs. Small terriers, never heard him until he was on us. He didn't attack but could have easily made a surprise attack. He circled the two small highland terriers I was walking. Somewhat aggressive he was unsure about attacking. Large pit that was still technically a puppy mentality, young but not small. Had an old original CS large voyager tanto serration blade I took out. I had time since he circled a couple times. I was ready to stab but waited and he seemed to be ok. I walked home and be followed. I put away Dogs and then ended up giving him some water and food. He Prob got loose, and I was glad he wasn't vicious and glad I didn't have to hurt or kill him.
