Busse Combat

A Busse is to knife guys what a rolex is to watch guys... it's something coveted for one reason or another and you want or don't. Jerry has provided something more than a what a typical knife/sheath combo can give... a little mystery, one of the best heat treat's in the business and a reputation second to none in the non custom market and he's knit himself a really nice niche market that makes the rest of us pretty jealous I'd say and good for him. I don't think he has much to worry about in not providing sheaths... pretty sure people would buy them if they came without handles!

oh i think most knife guys want one, but they aren't super easily had. the flippers try to corner the market and supply and drive the prices up. the made in batches setup move fast..... snooze you lose routine. they aren't exactly cheap(and for good reasons. good materials done well, high quality, top notch warranty and very high demand for the supply). money issues aside i'd imagine everyone would would like a piece of infi steel. i know i would. only the ultimate stubborns would pretend to not want one.....

If the lack of a sheath is holding you back on a knife that costs $800 I think you might have your priorities wrong. Further, when you say a premium product, don't you think it is important to where something is made and what it is made out of over and to be made by a quality company the inclusion of a sheath? Those DUK knives that are so often tuaghted are dubious at best and expensive. They won't even tell you where they are made. They cost $200 plus. Sorry, I'll take no sheath, high quality company, high quality materials, and known source any day all day. Add on another $40 and I can get a sheath from a number of quality makers.

Hi Craytab

I am not too sure, why you keep mentioning DUK all the time,I only appointed fact, that there are plenty of people who are expecting for 800 bucks knife with the quality sheath, simply full package....which in this price tag comes even with most of high end custom knives.

Don't get me wrong, I am really convinced your favourite manufacturer Busse (according their feedback) makes top notch products and their steel and QC is very tight, even myself I love few of their designs mentioned allready (Battle Mistress, Moab, there was some other huge blade not long ago that they designed, which was really mind blowing and beautiful design)

But,,,,,as I myself, was about to pull the trigger on one Busse knife, didn't hit purchase button on shopping cart, because of lack of sheath and quality leather sheath for massive blades that I like doesn't come for the price of 40 bucks.....you must be honest here.... Kydex or Ballistic nylon maybe, but not the leather (my own favourite) .

Why you keep commenting on DUK in relation to Busse so frequently I can only explain, that you know I liked one of their knives (The Outback) - which is according to me hell lot of quality, durable massive blade manufactured with the leather sheath for 190bucks USD,,,,, for the price - you probably won't buy a knife of the size of pencil - knife from Busse. If they made a knife of that dimensions - it would cost probably anything between 800 to 1 and half k and would come without the sheath, so I d definitely don't fancy spending 200-300 bucks for the pencilknife without sheath, if you do, it's perfectly ok with me and your choice, your taste, your money, so as the same apply to any company /knife manufacturer such as Busse, what way they want to run their business and what sort of products they wish to offer to market. So, please don't be mistaken, I only raised my issue, what I think...... Busse could offer their own line of high quality knife sheaths coming with their knives, if not entire selection, than at least included in the price of their flagship largest knives, on which they charge really a lot of money IMO.... but of course, it is entirely up to every manufacturer, how he sees his business and there are plenty of folks, who doesn't mind having no sheath and are willing to fork out other money on top of allready expensive knife (I mentioned expensive - because small knife costing couple of hundred USD is expensive by any means for most of people, not because of any other means) take it or leave it, we are of different views and different opinions here in this topic and let's accept each other.

Take care

While Busse does make great large blades, you are missing out if you have never tried their midsized, all around general use knives.

Agreed. They're all awesome from the diminutive Assault Shaker to the mighty MOAB.

Once you've held one, you are never free... You'll crave them. You'll never look at other fixed blades the same way again.

Just get a Busse in your hand. That's how the virus spreads. Jerry infuses "Busseitis" into every blade.

Are you implying people dont use them? Wrong.

Ha I only use a small portion of my collection. Which is why I've actually started to sell some off. The ones I use I'm definitely keeping. Also the ones I might use I'm keeping. And the pretty ones, I'm keeping those too.

You can "think" what you want but reality is quite different. Which busse or kind have you owned for reference?

In all fairness, I don't believe he owns a DUK either. :D

That said, it certainly seems odd to draw conclusions about knives that you have never used that are wildly different than the conclusions people who use the knives have drawn.

Speaking of Busse, I just checked their news letter, this is for all lovers of huge blades, over 13 inch BB13 made of infi - "combat grade" below 400 bucks, knife look more like a machete, I think this is a great deal, considering its brand and steel... Just letting know to all Busse lovers....

Not too sure how thick is this blade 250" in millimetres, BB13 combat grade,, but seem great knife I'd just changed the handle shape, adding guard and pommel out of stainless steel, wooden or micarta scales and get rid of black coating, mirror polishing the blade and it would be one heck of the great, sexy looking chopper guys.... If had a piggybank full, I d smash it for this blade right now to be honest

Wow! Thanks for letting me in on the exclusive deal!

Are you going to buy one too? I sure am!

In other words, you like this knife somewhat, but to be perfect in your eyes it would have to be completely the opposite of what it is...

I really like Busse Knives - I have several, I tend to like the larger knives, but also have mid-sized and one smaller knife (Pork Shank).

I remember reading Jerry's thoughts on why he quit making sheaths, and you can find that post in his forum with a little searching.

Some of the makers really enjoy sheath making (a very few of them) and a lot of them find that work tedious, time consuming and not what they want to be doing; they want to be making more blades!

Some mass manufactured guns come with a holster, but the great majority of guns do not come with a holster. Wilson Combat, Les Baer etc. The buyer knows that coming in and also has many options after the purchase to get a sheath customized to their particular use model.

On problem with the no-sheath model is that, in my experience, leather sheath makers typically have a long backlog. You can wait a while for a custom sheath.

I can see the point that you just got your wonderful new Busse and want to take it out in the woods to let it eat and yet have no sheath. I would say make a cardboard and duct tape sheath and proceed while you are waiting for your custom sheath.

I bet a Busse Knife would rather have a tactical duct tape sheath anyway; they don't have a "fancy sheath" personality in my opinion.

best

Yes, all the ones with edges will do that [emoji13]

Just asking because it is hard to decipher edge geometry from pictures; my assumption is that Busse edge geometry is optimized for chopping instead of slicing. Wondering if they have any models optimized for cutting/slicing instead . . .

They used to have a competition finish that had a ridiculously thin and sharp convex grind. But most of them can be reprofiled easily enough. The smaller models will sometimes have thinner blades that slice better.
