Busse for actual combat

Hi. I am new here but not new to Busse knives. I own five and use them all extensively in training - mostly tameshigiri but also some occasional tree pruning and "live" play with experienced associates.

My main interest in Busse knives is of course the INFI steel, but I am also sold on the micarta handles. Since I use them almost exclusively for combat training, I wanted to ask all of you Busse users/collectors what Busse knife YOU would prefer to use if you ever had to use one on another person. My friends and I test our knives for a variety of attributes in this regard, which I invite you to consider:

What do you look for in thrust, slice, and chopping capabilities and how much of a trade off you are willing to accept? (Does your personal preference or fighting style lean towards slice/thrust knives or straight-up choppers?)

What handle design would you prefer to use in actual combat? - think in terms of manueverability as well as whether you can maintain a good grip if your hand gets tired or if you get blood on the handle.

What pommel design do you prefer, and why? For example, I like a pommel that is flat or at least rounded so it won't snag on clothing when I draw the weapon and also so I can reinforce certain thrusts with my free hand.

Other factors include serrations, blade length, heft, magnum versus standard handles...

Any and all thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated as I use these criteria when I buy new Busse knives.

As for what I personally prefer, I like the AK-47 as it is short and narrow with a nice kissaki (tip) and long handle. It works well for slicing, thrusting, and chopping, but thrusts are tricky if the handle is slippery as it doesn't have much of a guard. I also like the ST-56 as it is slender, pointy, and has a nice curve to it. The pommel design isn't the best for fast-draws from concealed locations under clothing but certainly is effective in combat.

Thank you for reading, considering, and posting!!

For combat purposes I would have to go with the RUCK and the Tali-Whacker
A light field combat sword and a jap. style tanto would get the job done very well...

I think the Mud Razor would be the perfect combat knife if it had a bigger hand guard.

The SFNO/ Razor pommel is about as good as it gets.

For actual combat the Mud Razor would be best all around Busse combat knife I own (I don't have an argonne assault) if you had to use it for fighting. The AK or ruck would be better for pure blade fighting. They give you farther reach and still allow great chopping and thrusting ability.

CapitalizedLiving: Hi bro. Well with over 15 years of FMA trainging and teaching I have a few thoughts. And I will only comment on the knives I have owned or tried.

(1) AK47: light, compact (for a sword IMO), well balanced, durable, etc... Excellent thrusts & chops. All while keeping your opponant at a safer distance.

(2) BATAC: easily concealed. My SE version is excellent for thrusts and slashes. A lot of blade in a compact package. But still a tank and would meet all your utilitarian needs.

(3) FFBM: CHOP CHOP CHOP! What that thing did not chop in half it would break or shatter. Reminds me of my old bolo but on steroids.

(4) Scrapper 4: Not Busse but INFI so.... This is the ultimate urban blade for concealment. Excellent ergonomics on the handle. I love it. But it's my wife's. :(

Handles: I prefer the Tac handles as it is easier to manipulate the blade or switch from standard to reverse grips. IMO. Although I still need to try the SF handles. I also like the skull crusher on the Tacs.

My ST Ripper is the ULTIMATE for me. It has been many years since I've done anything but train. But I believe it would prove to be my favorite if I had to use it otherwise as well.
I prefer a slice system. Similar to Apache Ghostdog, taught by Robert Redfeather.

That would do it. Very nice. I NEED one of those too. :D

of the ones i own, i think my CG BATAC would work pretty well. it's got a custom handle though (smaller and straighter so it's easier to manipulate). the HR would be pretty good as well. possibly the FSH for a slightly bigger one since it's not as heavy as the FBM. of the ones i don't own, (and i'll stick to knives because i'm not trained in any of the types of swords Busse makes) the ZTBM would be pretty awesome i think.

Well, I am not sure, since this is the least likely thing to ever happen. Combat knives are utilitarian knives more than anything else. But for fighting, I would take an AK-47 and give it the Ban treatment.

If I HAD to use a blade for fighting, the AK47 would be my choice. It would be an awesome weapon and tool in a post apocalyptic scenario, some years down the line, when people eventually start running out of bullets (if anyone here has read The Road by Cormack Mcarthy they'll know what I'm talking about). It's not too long to use indoors but still long enough to give you the advantage over someone with a knife, it's perfect :)

I have to fight with my wife everytime I order a Busse.

Therefore every model is a pretty good fighting knife for me!!! :D

well, if you include the swords i guess i'd choose a ruck for each hand, if skunk's hades hornet or his giant O dachi weren't available.
knives only i'd choose an argonne assault or assault ring fighter, or 8" pure bred fighter.
but i'd much rather have a shotgun and a .45 for fighting.:)

Hmmm... I depend on a CCW (typically S&W 642) and a backup of a strong folder.

For the question you are asking?

I think my preference would be a War Boar.

A RUCK/AK-47 and a PBF would make a good combo.

The GPK would work well in-close.

The Satin Jack TAC for me, but if I had to face an AK 47 I would run as fast as I could in the other direction. :D

Well, I'd prefer my Randall .45 if it came to a fight...but definitely an AK-47 for those pesky zombies!!! :D

A girl needs a knife...

Very good advice and great pics from all involved, thank you!

Ikarus, I also like the fact that the AK-47 works well indoors or in any tight space yet has a good reach to it. I only wish Busse made some sort of "mini AK" that is basically the top 8 inches of an AK-47 on a TAC handle. It would make a great companion piece. Maybe I should make a call to their custom shop...

Does anyone have pics of a RUCK or a Hades Hornet? Can't say I've seen those before...

i'm pretty sure this is not the hades hornet.
but this IS the sword i'd want in a fight.
(thanks drew)
