Busse for actual combat

For knife-fighting, you want to have a guard hook on the top of the knife to catch an opponent's blade, another guard underneath to deflect, and the spine of the blade should be sharpened too, at least for the first 2-3 inches, to facilitate a backhand-slash. The Bowie-knife is a pretty textbook example of such a fighting knife.

Not many Busse knives fit the description really, too many of them lack the necessary guards. An Argonne Assault with a blade hook would be a good candidate.

next time i find myself trapped in the galley fighting tommy lee jones i will definitely keep that in mind!

I know knife fighting isn't a common, every day event for everybody. I would warn off the eye rolling and such though. A knife coming out and being used was a very common occurence in the digs I frequented while living in Mississippi, Salinas, CA and while travelling through some regions of Texas. Just because it isn't in the media and it's not on a police report, don't mean it doesn't happen.

BTW, I've never found guards useful, just a shirt or jacket to wrap the blocking arm.
Just my experience and my $.02.

Using a knife as a weapon is real. No eye rolling here. However, most of the recorded examples I have read about or heard were more like "knifings" as opposed to knife fights or knife duels. I have had to disarm a few knives in my time as a bouncer (the good old days ;) ) and such... and I am glad the wielders were not trained with them. Because a sharp knife can split muscle and skin with relatively little pressure and I am speaking from experience. I even have a nice scar to remind me. :o:o

Tyrkon - The days as a bouncer still sound safer than the days with the 8th graders!

lol Probably true. With 2400 students the probability of a weapon is pretty good. I am just lucky that I have a certain respect from my students. But it has been getting crazy lately. And East Los Angeles is not even one of the more dangerous areas to teach in lately. Just ask Morimotom.

That's why I have to get my Ruck to fit into my lap top case.:D Or how about an LMS. Hmmmm.

I'd have to agree. I bounced in Desert Hot Springs for awhile, way back in the days it was a Meth Capitol. Now I work around every school age group daily. I felt safer way back, and couldn't imagine being in the classroom all day. Tyr, you certainly have my respect.

Get a gym bag with a tennis racquet cover on the oustide... :D

.

Good idea. I have always kept my Kali gear in a baseball bat bag. Works great too.

Going to the other extreme here, if we are just talking about using a knife for SD, I also like the smaller ones such as something the size of the LMS. Easy to conceal, even in your hand, until you need it. Fast of course. Harder to disarm or flatten out because of its small size. Just some thoughts.

Mall ninja, chop socky, wanna be, zombie wacking or something to go along with the 40+lbs of crap Uncle Sugar aready gave you? My .02 would be the SJ in any form in general use or, of course, my Nuke Variant. Unfortunately there are times when all you can have is a folder and a Leaner Meaner so you might want to train a little with that to:rolleyes:;)

Knife duels are highly unlikely in this day and age. What one would most likely run into is knife vs unarmed or attacker with knife vs defender with knife still in pocket. So yes, a small knife that you train with and always have on you is better than a large one left at home.

Having said that... I would still pick a Ruck on the right and FABM with HolyTerror on the left if given the choice. :D

Thanks but it doesn't feel that bad. I keep rules pretty tight in my room and arrange the kids in such a way that I can pretty much see all of them at once all the time. But there have been a few incidents outside my class that involved a high number of students (many 6' plus) where it felt like a riot or mob type mentality. People seem to do some of the dumbest things in large groups. Things they wouldn't under normal circumstances.

I prefer something like this for a small SD knife.

One of the best feeling small knives for me has been the CRKT Ryan Plan B fixed blade.

I just wish it was made of better steel.

What is that BAN? A modified SS?

No, I am still looking for the right Busse to modify into something like that.

The reverse edge methodology lends itself to stabs and cuts going in and rip cuts coming back out. This means a block with the forearm or hand to ward off initial strike will result in said body part being fillet.

fighting vs. combat are two terms that one should keep seperate. the modern term of combat has to be modified with "hand to hand combat" to really be directly associated with physical altercations.

honestly, for that purpose I don't like any of them (choils are evil). I'd use the satin jack in unmodified form, but only because thats the one non custom busse I would carry for edc uses, so it would be the one that I had on me.

custom all the way. my custom choiless "thin as your willing to make it" sjtac will more then likely be my #1 choice. in regards to knife fighting, if I've drawn a knife it's because I'm lucky enough to have enough time to draw it, and my only goal is to kill whoever is threatening my life or my loved ones. for that, perry, block, head shot is the preferred tactic. everything else is playing with fire.

and for that, something thats not to long, with a decent gaurd and secure handle. I'd say the badger attack tac would be the closes to that, though I'd prefer it with a thinned out profile.

Reading your original post I'm lead to believe you are referring to SD terms when it comes to a bladed weapon. First and foremost....a knife would not and should not be your first line of defense especially if you have a better choice and options. The following comes to mind.....

P30-1.jpg

Using the single Busse knife I own as an example, a BATAC, it would not be my first choice to use in a knife fight. I would want something light, fast in both weight and deployment. It takes very little effort and or skill to be effective with a blade. Add skill behind that blade and a knife fight is probably the last thing anyone of us wants to be involved in. Receiving or delivery.

Something I can carry inconspicuous, its cheap fast and reliable...it is usually worn behind my tie if I'm wearing one....a Cold Steel small bird and trout knife.

If I'm not at work, I always carry a knife everywhere I go and depends where i'm going its either a CRKT M21 or my Microtech QD Scarab. Keep in mind...none of these blades are carried for the purpose of SD but utility. However, they could be pressed into service easily enough.

I would recommend reading the Practical Tactical section here on Bladeforums as well.....most of the time I have to laugh at what I read...however, you also have gems hidden in the weeds from those that are knowledgeable on the topic of blades and SD.
