You cannot beat the old original Jeeps ..... we still have a few preserved in military museums over here ....

Now though we use something slightly bigger .....

But in Iraq they struggled .... the best vehicle we found was the Unimog ....

My Dad though loved the Jeep ... he used them during Korea ... and said they were one of the best vehicles for coping with the extreme cold ... my preference tho' is the Unimog .... amazing off road ability

Thanks for the knowledge

Nothing can touch the Unimog offroad but in general they top out at about 45mph downhill with a tailwind. The jeep is so famous because you can daily drive it and its very capable offroad.

Haven't been around much lately as I've been on the road between AZ and MT recently as well as finishing up a different truck project, but here is my one and only Jeep. Yep, it's a 5/4 ton M715 and I had to flat tow it home from 2 miles away from where it came to life in the Toledo, OH plant to AZ and then up to MT where it is on my project list. I've had it for over 3 years and still haven't done my cummins 4BT conversion to it yet, but it is patiently waiting for it's turn in the shop.

This is the truck I just finished putting a Cummins 6BT into to use as my hauling rig. A real 3500HD from back when HD stood for Heavy Duty and not High Dollar. It is kind of like the Busse of one ton trucks and built like a tank with a factory Dana 70 front and Dana 80 rear axle and 15,000 lb GVW. I got 8.5 MPG pulling this load that totaled over 27k from AZ to MT two weeks ago. Thankfully I got 16 MPG on the way back with just over a ton on the bed and no trailer.:D

I like that old Jeep pick up ..... it always struck me as having great design lines .... first saw one as a child in the Daktari TV show :D.... loved them and off road beach buggies ever since .....:D:D

Our problem over here in terms of trying to run an off road vehicle as a bit of fun is the cost of fuel .... your pic shows Diesel at just under $3.00 a gallon

Here in the UK it is £1.21 a litre!! Which is £5.50 a gallon and converted to dollars that is $8.43 ....

The only thing which works well off road and is affordable for us is a Quad ....

Going off on a Quad with a rifle to shoot foxes is one of life's finer moments ...:cool:

This is a great thread. I am wanting to get a Jeep as a project and daily driver. Keep posting them up!

I hear you. If the cost of fuel keeps going up the way it has the last decade we all may find more utility in horses and other animals than machines some strange day in the future.
But until then I will enjoy the luxury of a nice 4x4 vehicle, good whiskey and INFI! :D

Here's my 04 wrangler. 8,450 miles. ARB lockers fore & aft, with a 4:11 ratio. Rubicon lifted, along with some other mods.
I need to throw some tube fenders on her next.
She's kinda like a Safe queen. since she's seldom driven.

Advanced Adapters makes great kits to swap all kinds of engine/trans combos in to Jeeps. I have the small block chevy kit for years with no problems. Let me know if you have any questios, maybe I can help:D
